Still think the console players would be better off with a smart phone app that links to your character to determine the chat you can hear/see

They might be more likely to go for that, actually.
They seemed pretty quick to agree to add the Looking for Group on it.

Of course, they'd have to figure out a way to prevent people from making obnoxious, vulgar, racist ones etc.

Maybe you all should come up with a list of Quick Chat phrases you'd like to see added.

    Both......

Implement text chat for consoles, DCUO is a 5 year old last gen game on a ten year old game engine that has text chat.

Just gives us a text chat already especially since you close every thread in the crafting section of people looking for people who can craft trait and style items.

    And

Yes an iPhone/android app with a chat option would be awesome as well

Just implement the text chat. People want to play together. The fact that people want to play your game at all should be enough incentive to make this happen. The easier it is to group up the more people play and the better it is for you.

Btw, give up on the junk goup finder. That thing is a waste. Let people use text chat to form groups (like Warframe).

ever play warframe? it has a nice implementation of text chat. whilst in your ship(in eso case a town) text chat is used via the left trigger. could be different maybe on the d pad somewhere. when in town it will show up when there is chatter in the box. this when opened can be switched from different sub chats like area region squad guild ect. whilst out of town (for warframe while in a mission) you would briefly see words on the bottom right of the screen that would stay for roughly 5 seconds after someone typed. they also have to pause the game in order to access the chat menu so no accidently pressing it and popping up. this would stop spamming and or keep it to a minimum outside of a town where you are trying to battle things. could this be annoying? possibly however the option of switching to squad chat when solo or private chat would be there to no longer see other peoples type.

whilst in town you can see the sub category chats and they can highlight when someone is speaking in them say for guild chat and squad chat so you know when someone is trying to say something. there could also be a toggle switch for turning chat off completely or turning off notifications in town. this would allow people to use the feature that want it and the rest wont have to. would only be a minor inconvenience to have to turn the toggle off if it isn't wanted by said player

Kind of why I suggested it. I just don't see them adding text chat, I could be completely wrong but I would definitely want an option to hide it. I think customizable quick chat would be great. If you wanted to sell something or needed a certain role you could just spam the same quick chat over again like "Selling X" and you wouldn't have a text chat history full of madness. I really think voice chat is done wonderful when in groups (not area chat)

That's not really different than text chat if it is customizable. This also doesn't solve the lack of zone communication. Proximity voice chat is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle.

There is no reason it couldn't be a console element.

I honestly don't even care. I play on PC, and wouldn't play on a console if you paid me to.

I just want to see text chat implemented for consoles because I'm sick of the hundreds of posts per day on the issue.

I saw how text chat was on final fantasy and it was horrendous. So my experience isn't that good with text chat on consoles. Only way that would be viable would be if you have one of those keyboard plug in things for your controller which would be too much imo , especially with the headset plugged in & I'd rather chose voice chat over text chat if I had to chose one

Yeah but then I have to keep a keyboard on my lap or on my bed at all times.. It just doesn't sound reasonable. When I played on PC I used to do exactly that. Id have my keyboard next to me and use my controller and it was just a nightmare for me personally , hence the reason I switched from PC to console because everyone uses a mic and I like using my controller

The best option is not something outside of the game. Why do so many people suggest these things? I want the things used to play the game, you know, inside the game. I have no desire to be tethered to my phone or have to jump between three apps just to play ESO.

If you are talking about an additional communication option? Sure. But suggesting that online forums or PS communities or phone apps are better than a communication vehicle in game? I'll just never understand.

No you dont need a keyboard. Why would use text chat when you can use voice for chatting?

Text chat is needed for grouping, trading, and mass communication in zones (like cyrodiil) or with in guilds.

Your not going to carry on conversations with text chat just use highly abbriviated short sentences to make your point. For example, "LFG-vet wayrest", or "WTS v16 ring of willpower arcane", or "12 EB attacking Chalman". For that the controller works fine.

Then you go back to speaking to your group via voice.

Historically, the pro text chat people have also aligned themselves with women and those with disabilities who really do want text chat for everyday communication that should be done via voice. I don't personally care for that, no offense.

Ive seen how much better grouping and trading is with text chat and id like for this great game to have it.

I believe this way would be used mostly for gathering up a group over anything maybe trade but during mid battle not many will pull up the chatbox and take out their keyboard and type out what they want to say it is much faster to just say it in mid combat

Sure it may be a first world problem, but the PC players are already using a mouse and keyboard. The navigation to a text box couldn't be any simpler for them. To implement the same thing for console, I would need a keyboard on my bed next to me. I would have to put down my controller to type the message or have the keyboard on my lap and do some comical infomercial-esque maneuver where I hold the controller and type with one hand or use my pinky fingers or something like that. What happens if I want to navigate within said text box? Pick up the controller again, move the cursor, switch back to typing.

The thing is, as ridiculous as it sounds, it's something that I am already doing when I have my laptop next to me and I am chatting with my girlfriend in Hangouts or if I am looking up skyshard locations, for example. It is virtually impossible to type on a keyboard with a controller in your hand (duh) and switching back and forth just doesn't make for a good experience.

Edit: And I'm doing this extra stuff while in towns, safe areas, etc. and it still sucks.

Similarly, using an on-screen keyboard is useless, unless you have some time to spare. That's why I don't log tickets for bugs, or even use the Mail system. Heck, even changing the Message of the Day for my guild is a total pain in the ass. Luckily, for those things, I have the console app, so I can use my phone like a blue tooth keyboard. Plus my swype text works, so it's pretty quick.

Overall, I actually see a lot of people being sorely disappointed in text chat implementation because of all the problems it poses.

http://www.esotulfg.com/ has it as a third party solution.

Customized radial chat IMO isn't a logical solution because you're basically offering a hard to read text chat over a head vs in a window.
For the ppl that want text chat....from countless discussions....they want what PC has.

The only logical options today are move to PC, use console social features or the website in my signature

Text chat is essential for forming groups. Mics are essential running content. As I sit waiting for people to possibly show up to take down world bosses in Wrothgar it's very clear how text would be useful. Voice chat is very very limited for forming groups.

Do either of you think that the field of view is slightly different on console than it is on PC? I see these videos and screen shots from PC that show an extremely wide FOV in 3rd person, where they can have counters and a text box, and all these other add-ons on the sides of the screen. It seems to me that the full FOV in 3rd person on console is MUCH tighter.

Just implement the damn text chat.

Text chat is a PC element not a console element :-)

Why? Modern consoles are not much different than a PC. This distinction could have been reasonably made 10 years ago but not now. USB keyboards work on all modern platforms

Everyone has a smart phone and guess what.... There's an app for that ;-)

I forgot the chapad in my response too. I think those and cellphones are the more elegant input solutions, over the usb keyboard.
