If you don't understand why your country or state is ineligible, look up your local gambling laws. In my case it's because it's considered a lottery, and the lotteries are only legal if run by the state or it is for a charitable cause.

To me, gambling is when you've got something to lose. You're basically getting the chance to win a lot of money for simply playing a game most of us play every day. Hardly considered gambling.

I know, sadly my government doesn't, to them anything where you can win a prize by random chance is by definition a lottery, doesn't matter if you have to pay or not.

Just put $25 in the game last week. Should have waited. :(

Just give them money because I love the game, but they are not caring about us at all.

I'm a subber who has bought multiple crown packs, and also the Imperial Edition of the game at full price. I'm not going to stop playing, but I'm definitely going to cancel my sub when it expires now.

Edit: Of course, that'll mean I have to buy the DLC's, as I like them...grr...

I already canceled my sub yesterday. And New York is out too.

    The contest FAQ says:
When we came up with this crazy idea, we wanted everyone across the globe to have a chance at winning the million bucks. However, it turns out that giving away that much money isn't as straight forward as we had hoped. There are different competition rules per country and even across states and that ultimately determined for us the final list of eligible countries and states.

Well... I guess that some bureaucracy is the limit on how far they're willing to go for a lot of people that are supporting them around the world. It's funny that we can pay from anywhere

But ok, I understand... I just think that there should be some for of secondary contest (even if symbollic, just crowns, costumes, mounts, whatever) for everyone. It's only fair.

its your government. it isnt zenimax.

    please do your research

But it is Zenimax that decided on this competition, it is them who put it together, and before they gave the final go ahead they had to be aware of how many people that would be excluded. They where aware of the laws and decided to go with it any how. try and deflect blame all you want but it is Zenimax who are at fault here.

It's actually pretty disgusting how no matter what ZOS does, someone finds a way to complain.

A majority recognize this and we're complaining about our local governments

The rest that complain about zenimax, well it's more or less sour grapes. Offer something positive up rather than tearing everything down in a tantrum.

Has anybody read down to the bit where it says that Canadians have to complete a math test to win?

"If entrant is a resident of Canada: correctly answer without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question to be administered at a mutually convenient time in person or by telephone"

So, uh... mathematically challenged Canadians are also out?

Any Canadians know the reason for that clause?

Regardless, it gave me a good laugh.

@r.leigh.harperb14_ESO That's once again - a government thing, not a ZOS thing. I don't think I have ever seen a giveaway that doesn't have this clause for Canada. From what I've read it's something to do with making is skill and not chance (not a lawyer).

Plenty of people care other wise there wouldn't be as much complaining going on would there. and what is actually disgusting is how easily you turn on the community and jump at the chance to defend a company who have time and time again proven that their players are really only an after thought.

This competition is not aimed at the players, it is a publicity stunt to attract new players, and what will new players see when they come to the forums. Flames and rage and an endless run of threads complaining about any number of issues.

It is a badly planned Competition that excludes a sizable portion of the player base and what is really disgusting is how easily you turn on that player base because they annoyed at being excluded.

Aha, thanks... I didn't think it was a ZOS thing (although, that would be extra funny if for some arbitrary reason they decided to add math questions for Canadians...)

Most US states can participate in lotteries, so chance is fine, but there's a bit of a kerfuffle over fantasy sports sites being illegal as "gambling" instead of skill... I wonder if they added a math question at the end of the form if that would clear it up!

Reason: a spanish player can't buy any lottery ticket concerning money prizes from other countries. A spanish citizen can buy a lottery ticket of another country if he or she travels to that other country and buy it there. If she or he wins, the money has to be declared to the government and pay the appropriate tax.

Anyway, nothing is prohibiting us receiving digital yummies like crowns :pensive:

Because the prize is funded by Bethesda and a huge chunk of Bethesda revenue is provided by international customers? Globalization works both ways, dear.

Other way round buddy... why get the 10% allowed into this contest all the benefits when it was largely the excluded 90% all around the globe who all paid for their game, subscriptions, crowns, etc, causing Z to have a spare mil laying around in the first place?

Apparently Z is doing rather well cash wise but instead of investing to improve the game, server hardware, hiring more developers and... you know... QA and testers which would improve the game for all of us they throw the money away in a PR scheme to a selected few.
Frankly, that... nah, I can't even write here what I really think about this. :s

But why we can't win the 3'000 crowns? It's not money and it's virtual.

Virtual currency is still currency. This has already been decided many years ago and a continued effort to integrate laws around this is ongoing as massive true value is placed on virtual goods and services today.

All right. OK. So then, indeed, it is their money, it is their lottery (though, could certainly argue about where that money comes from, if not mostly from their customers AROUND the planet). But I got a few questions, mostly rhetorical, since they will go unanswered.

And I will tell my own little story, no ones care about it, but whatever. So, I happen to live in (wretched) Greece. Took me some gigantic effort o pre-order a physical Collector's copy (not available in the country of course), at great expense. Was and am most happy about it, I wanted it badly since I am a total TES fan-atic for over 2 decades now.

Since that time, I was always subbed, until those lovely "capital controls" junta kicked in and will NOT allow us to spend our hard earned money on that or anything else (abroad). That was like almost 1.5 years of sub anyway. Although I was never totally happy with ESO and where it was / is heading to, I always wanted to support it and happy to pay for a sub (even after the B2P thing).

So, I now feel like a second class citizen from a "third world country". Yeah, of course, pathetic Greece is now at the bottom of the craphole, but not every inhabitant is some dirty scumbug.

So, I am told, that just a handful of "elite" countries can participate, out of the 200 (?) recognised on this planet. Jolly good. Apparently the money from people from all those "other" places stinks. And I don't care one bit about the "legal restrictions", that is a giant load of b***s. They might had a handful with giving out a cash prize, but don't tell me they can't gift a virtual thing like crowns, even to a Martian.

And finally, there have been some comments around, more or less claiming the "supremacy" of citizens of certain "elite countries" compared to "beggars" from, yeah, all those "beggar countries". To which I will repeat what I said about the 'colour of money" earlier. And will conclude that such comments are pure chauvinist horsepoop, and they can stuff them where they know, thanks.

Whilst I admit I was in an awful mood at ZOS about the selling of Bites on the Crown store at the time, I stand by the gist of my comment.
I certainly don't actually expect any special treatment for being in an area with bad connection to the servers, however I do expect ZOS to try and show at least some kind of respect to us players who are in inelligable countries.

As I said in another discussion, I would have been happy if they'd presented some small alternative prize for people in the other countries that can't enter, and suggested a custom costume/mount etc that could be added. This would be both awesome, and would cost ZOS a whole lot less than 1mil.

@MrDerrikk There is a world of difference between expecting or demanding an alternate prize and wishing for one.

It would be a nice gesture, sure I agree, however I am not a fan of this either as I think it would be unfair to the the eligible countries. They will not win a million dollars AND now they won't get a special costume?

Besides that the idea of a "1 in a million costume" seems equally ridiculous to me.

All in all. Congratulations to the winner. I do not expect any "reward" for not being able to participate. It seems silly and entitled to me and honestly I do not need it and I do not think that ZOS will show me any respect by doing that. It is like giving a child candy because he sees another kid get candy.

If ZOS want to show us respect they have to communicate to us as their customer base. Ping ponging feedback and highlight information and faults they are working on. That is showing respect.
