Role Playing With Chest Thieves

I think that we have all come across the chest thief. That's the character that for whatever reason believes that any chest is fair play even the ones that are protected by NPCs that are currently fighting someone else for the chest.

That has happened to me before and the most interesting explanation for it in zone chat was that the character was "role playing' a thief. Fair enough.

Earlier this morning in Wrothgar there was a chest in a cove that was protected by a giant and a mammoth. The chest was impossible to get to without fighting both so I proceeded to do so.

After the battle lo and behold what should I find but another player opening the chest. Grrrr.

Fair is fair I thought so I proceeded to follow him on his chest circuit. I watched him as he looted a chest while a nearby player fought an ogre for it.

I continued to follow or rather race him around Wrothgar until he came upon a chest protected by two black bears. While he was busy battling the bears on top of the chest I looted the chest. Damn that felt good!

Of course I don't intend to do that again but then fair is fair if you're gonna roleplay a thief.

As simple Khajiit, I swear at the tw..s. Shame cannot perma kill their character ingame. The significant majority are filthy sorcerers.

To counter that I was running around Wrothgar looking for nodes yesterday with another player running nearby, we were leap frogging nodes in a reasonably amicable way - I stopped to fight two of those deer looking muthas who were sitting on a ruby ash node, he made to move towards it but clearly felt it would be wrong and ran on so I picked it up when the fight was done.

He could have been a *** but chose not to be - there are decent players out there to make up for the ****s you meet.

    This.

There are unwritten rules that some either refuse to follow, don't care, or are just ignorant. Basically it boils down to the golden rule (and I'm sure there are even people that don't know what that is!)

The same things happens when harvesting nodes, it's just something you have to live with...

I had a guy ninja a harvesting node in Craglorn the other night from me while I was fighting the mobs around it. So I swapped on my regen gear and slotted boundless storm and then followed him around on his farming circuit. The moment he spotted a resource node I would bolt escape ahead and loot it (With gathering CP passive). If there were multiple nodes I usually got them all before he could. I did this for a good 20 minutes before he ported somewhere else. Next time you think to Ninja loot something from someone, make sure they aren't a Sorc. I used to do the same thing to guys who would jump into the middle of your CP grind pack pull and leech as much exp as they could. It should never pay to be a D bag.

It's an open world chest that has items of little value in them.

If someone steals it from you while you are fighting an npc just move on and find the next one. Getting upset over it will only hurt you in the long run.

    So says the chest thief.

I have this more than enough times. 9/10 times I've managed to get them back - or I pull mobs to them and run away leaving them to face the carnage :naughty:

Alternatively, u can pull the enemies over to him and force him to work for the chest. Enemies won't stand there and wait until you're finished opening a chest to attack. Now that's devious. ;)

Rarely happens to me, but, i think in the exact same spot as OP mentioned, on the coast of Wrothgar with a troll near by. I started killing the Troll to get to said chest, only for another player to rush in and open the chest. I whispered him and called him a dirty lizard (he was argonian) and he ran back to me, dropped a liquid lightning at my feet and ran off again.

    I found it amusing.

I don't believe it's RNG. Remember- orsinium is scaled. So, where you see Ancestor Silk- the other person most likely sees their current version of a mat... like spider silk or flax. So, it would make sense that they skip it.

Yes and no. Your Crafting Material Level determines the level of material you see in the node. However, at least at the top end, RNG determines whether you see Ancestor Silk or Void Cloth nodes. I don't know if the intermediate levels have this "dual" chance, all my characters are either maxed on Materials or have no points in Materials. The ones that have no points always see Iron or Jute or get the low end leather drops.
