Role Playing With Chest Thieves

I think that we have all come across the chest thief. That's the character that for whatever reason believes that any chest is fair play even the ones that are protected by NPCs that are currently fighting someone else for the chest.

That has happened to me before and the most interesting explanation for it in zone chat was that the character was "role playing' a thief. Fair enough.

Earlier this morning in Wrothgar there was a chest in a cove that was protected by a giant and a mammoth. The chest was impossible to get to without fighting both so I proceeded to do so.

After the battle lo and behold what should I find but another player opening the chest. Grrrr.

Fair is fair I thought so I proceeded to follow him on his chest circuit. I watched him as he looted a chest while a nearby player fought an ogre for it.

I continued to follow or rather race him around Wrothgar until he came upon a chest protected by two black bears. While he was busy battling the bears on top of the chest I looted the chest. Damn that felt good!

Of course I don't intend to do that again but then fair is fair if you're gonna roleplay a thief.

I would have loved to be in the head of the "role player" to know how he felt being "played". :)

The other day I actually encountered a jerk who followed me to TWO chests and basically stood on top of me spamming every noisy and flashy spell he had in an effort to break my concentration while I was picking the lock. He was unsuccessful both times and did not stand between me and my ill gotten gains. But I was thinking, "Wow... really dude? Die in a fire."

So to the OP... good on you! And I think everyone who reads this thread should ask you who this jerk was (which you will answer privately of course so as to avoid the "no name and shame" rule) so we can make a point of repaying the favor many times over. ;)

To counter that I was running around Wrothgar looking for nodes yesterday with another player running nearby, we were leap frogging nodes in a reasonably amicable way - I stopped to fight two of those deer looking muthas who were sitting on a ruby ash node, he made to move towards it but clearly felt it would be wrong and ran on so I picked it up when the fight was done.

He could have been a *** but chose not to be - there are decent players out there to make up for the ****s you meet.

This is how I would prefer to play.

There really aren't any hard rules for chests so I treat others the way that I would like to be treated. That is unless you are roleplaying a thief. :)

This may have been me, I had the exact same experience yesterday but I was the guy that ran on...I did find a VR15 rune in the Potency rune node nearby though :p

For all I know I probably unintentionally steal chests and nodes all of the time. I never actively collect them, or look for them, but if I happen across them and if I'm not busy I'll pick them up, except I never recall looking to see if other players are nearby and in combat at the time. Likewise, I'm not sure if anyone's stolen a chest or node from me for the same reason; perhaps someone has but I've never connected the dots.

It's like that time I found out leaving worms in plant nodes was apparently an incourteous action because it keeps the node from respawning and luring people to try and pick up the node to find out there's only worms left in it, or that time I apparently offended a group of people when I killed a world boss to clear the area without realizing people nearby were waiting for their friend to get there first.

There must be like some secret MMO code of honor or respect that me and my ignorance keep trampling on without realizing it. People in-game must think I'm a jerk. :(

I unintentionally "steal" others loot a lot, but I tend to make it clear that is the case and try and make up for it (let them take the loot at teh next node etc).

Why would you leave the worms? They actually sell for an awful lot on Guild Stores if you get a full stack, so they're worth keeping even if you don't fish. So far as the world boss goes, I've done that one lots and lots of times. More commonly I get people swearing their face off at me in chat because "I stole their XP" when I'm just going through and clearing a delve as fast as I can...

Since ZOS thinks this is appropriate behavior they should formally add it to the Justice achievement. I'm thinking something like "Node Thief", "Chest Swiper", and even "Pinion Hog" as some possible "achievements". That last one happened to me today.. I was soloing a dolmen, just wrapping up the last monster and some yutz wandered in and grabbed 3 of the pinions and hogged the final pinion as I finished the boss fight. What a loser. It would be trivial to deter this sort of thing, just make nodes and chests that are in range of mobs "owned" by anyone fighting them with say a 30s cool down timer. If you don't harvest the node/chest 30s after the fight ends then it's up for grabs.

Even worse than the pinion thing is when you're soloing a dolmen and someone comes along and closes one of them before they're all open, then leaves...I just want to summon all the Generals onto their *** at that point :#

That's actually a great idea for when the justice system comes out. If you could "own" a chest or node by proximity and someone else grabbed it they would be targetable like in PVP. :)

    Yup. They don't respawn.

The same goes for a chest that I opened that had a rune in it. When I asked the player that just left the area about it he siad that he didn't want the rune so he left it for someone else to take.

That ruins the chance of a respawn for the person following that is "lucky" enough to be gifted the unwanted rune.

Collect those worms and sell them in a guild. You would be surprised at how much worms sell for. Lots of fishermen who don't wanna farm bait and worms are the hardest of the 4 basic baits to find.

It's an open world chest that has items of little value in them.

If someone steals it from you while you are fighting an npc just move on and find the next one. Getting upset over it will only hurt you in the long run.

    I respectfully disagree.

The real value in the chests is the chance of finding a treasure map and THAT has a better chance of a rare drop.

and the value in finding a treasure map is a non-issue. The items from a treasure map chest are about as valuable as selling ice to an Eskimo. Non of it is worth getting worked up over it and arguing in zone chat.

I don't believe it's RNG. Remember- orsinium is scaled. So, where you see Ancestor Silk- the other person most likely sees their current version of a mat... like spider silk or flax. So, it would make sense that they skip it.

Yes, the RNG part is which nodes you see when. That's how I look at it. A certain percentage is going to be Ruby stuff but where or when....who knows.
