Why doesn't this game give anything away?

Frigilius
Frigilius
Most of you have played other MMOs: you're aware then that most of them have phony holidays which give "free" stuff away at the cost of a bit of a grind. Why doesn't this game do that? Is it too special? Even the various grinds this game offers have a pretty low chance of giving you anything any good. How many of you have been grinding grinding grinding and still don't have enough glass recipe fragments for even a single recipe or still don't have the recipe for the experience potion? Given that 'tis the season, why don't the good people at Zenimax seem to be in the least infected with the spirit of generosity? Just curious.

Everything is free if you go out and Farm it....

OK, back to seriousness, it would be nice to have some themed events that result in a prize of some kind.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Events are sorely lacking. Other mmos have events, even if said event is limited to an instance and with only 4 people. In eso it would be a new limited time dungeon with cool or simply aesthetically pleasing items, such as a pet for eso.

One may say world bosses are said event. But that's a poor comparison, as there is nothing special about them.

World events are missing too (molag bal be glitched)

There are a few things eso could do to give players something to do outside of the big picture

I thought the same. ESO is pretty harsh when it comes to that.... like 'nothing is free' kind of attitude, I get it... but a little gift wouldn't hurt. ;)

One of the things I really miss about previous MMO's I have played (one of them in particular) was the holiday like events that gave you the chance to get a cool mount / pet / costume and neat on use items such as a "magic wand" that fired fireworks into the air when used!!

However with that said... we probably won't ever have anything cool like that in this game as the Lore Junkies would threaten to leave in droves... all 100 of them :D:D .

I totally agree with this post!

It really all comes down to the point of view:
-if they see events as a way for people to get stuff by bypassing Crown store altogether, they won't do it
-if they see events as a way to give time limited Crown store items, they just might do it.

    Free promotion anyone?
I guess they lack in the advertising compartment.

Just make ALL mobs drop #insert your christmas candy here#, make a christmas tree in all the capital cities where Undaunted are where you can cash in your #candy# for loot (just like IC vaults).
    - time limited costumes, pets, mounts
    - time limited IC jewlery
    - permanent but RARE v16 stuff

    WIN.

I think you've hit the nail right on the head. They're a minority, albeit a VERY noisy minority.

That said, ZOS could quite easily create their own lore based holidays that don't even have to coincide with real world holidays. They could hold GM led live events. They could release special, limited time instances. They don't though, and I'm very curious as to why not. My personal feelings on the matter are that it's one of two things, plus one highly unlikely one:
    1. That the state of the game code is such a disaster and there are so few actual employees that they just don't have any time or energy to devote to things like this, even though it would GREATLY increase customer satisfaction and player loyalty.
    2. That the suits at ZOS are so incredibly greedy that they cannot see the forest through the trees, and since they can't monetize special events they refuse to allow them, even though it would GREATLY increase customer satisfaction and player loyalty.
    3. That ZOS just doesn't care, which is the highly unlikely one.

What I see occurring on a regular basis on these forums is just a complete lack of understanding of how customer service is supposed to work, as well a fundamental failure in maintaining customer loyalty within the game itself. These deficiencies concern me, as they're the hallmark of products doomed to failure. That's not me saying that by not having events and such that the game is doomed. It's just that the lack thereof is a symptom of a much deeper and more troublesome underlying problem within ZOS itself. It's imminently fixable, but would probably require some sort of management shakeup at the top.

I do think its a time issue.

From my experience with MTG, (and most businesses) the next couple of years have been planned out. Ideas are being worked on (not sayin they are THIS far down the road) but typically if a new idea is considered and accepted, its usually at least a year before it can be implemented.

Considering the vast amount of possibilities (and a lack of competition on consoles) this should be heavily considered.

I mean what is gonna take the mmo ers away on console? Nothing, that's what lol

How about just making them in-game events that are not tied to any holiday then? What if Molag Bal decided to send his generals to dolmens for a long weekend and the players had to destroy a certain number of them to earn an individual or community reward? Or how about doubling the treasure scamp rewards in IC for a weekend? Even something simple like double AP events in Cyrodiil or letting certain enemies drop event items that could be traded in for collectible trophies or other rewads like v16 consumables (tri-pots for example). None of these would affect the lore, nor would they someone create a real-world theme that goes against the Elder Scrolls franchise.

Let's be honest, the only reason ZOS doesn't do events like these is because it would require effort on their part and they are focussed on releasing paid DLC instead of giving us free events.

EDIT: I hate to say it but the more I think about it the more ZO$ seems an appropriate moniker. Community events are a fundamental aspect of just about every MMO; well community events and text chat and we already know how ZO$ mismanaged the latter on consoles.

I agree. I love the holiday stuff. However, we went over this subject thoroughly prior to Halloween and the "lore Nazis" literally had a fit, even threatened to quit the game, if any real life holidays or any lore unfroendly costumes made it into the game. ZOS is trying to make things happen like you and I want but I'm afraid the outcry from the "lore Nazis" may scare them off.

Then just celebrate Saturalia instead, lore nazis will have no arguments. let everyone be able to go to a special instanced wayrest for a traditional party, minigames, and prizes.

I like this. I prefer real and meaningful holidays but I understand this game is all over the world and that gets tough. So your idea, and how you described it, of using lore holidays sounds good.

Please make it happen ZOS! Thank you!

During WWI, the Germans and the Allies would have a ceasefire at Christmas and actually meet one another in No-Man's Land for a little holiday revelry before going back to trying to slaughter one another the following day. If it can happen in real war, it can happen in a pretend one.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there was a mention of this holiday in Wrothgar, during one of the daily delve quests. Someone wanting werewolf coats for costumes. Seems like a good idea!

    The game still isn't finished.
-When the VR system is completely removed
-After VR is removed...and hopefully things wont be CP instead of VR
-After the grouping tools are updated
-After the Cyrodil lag is fixed
    -After loading screens are resolved

THEN....I hope we can see the team offer some cool things.

Things need fixed, yes. But this crap shouldnt have been shoveled out the door broke. They need to keep moving forward, and hit some homeruns, while fixing their previous mistakes. They may have to hire a few more bodies.

I don't know how much money actually makes it to the devs but they should be swimming in money after that crown sale. Am I right?

There are downsides to some of the freebies they could do.

Like, personal aura effects could be cool, but stacked with all other skills and effects they could wind up causing more lag than is accetable. Translucency could be seen as a strategic advantage in PVP; glowing/glow in the dark items could be disadvantageous in PVP.

Masks could be interesting, but most people would want to dye them making it less obvious which event they actually came from.

Consumables don't last. WOW should feel badly about putting charges on items people want to use but also keep as souvenirs.

Dyes, polymorphs, and costumes provide a lot of customization already. If you could dye polymorphs and costumes we'd be nearly out of ideas. If you could dye pets and mounts, well... what else is there to give away that feels special but not too special?

Witty titles? Like "Mead Madness" or "Wyrd Friend?" That's the only thing I can really think of, unless they did some sort of mini-badge you can display next to your name/ID.
