Is it weird to call a girl dood? To me it is like the western version of "mate", a sort of sexually ambiguous pronoun conveying informal familiarity. I don't see it as a strange way for a man to address a woman myself, especially if ones relationship is casual and informal, like a guild buddy, or someone on your friends list.

Yeah one of my pet annoyances is being called mate in RL and in game it just feels odd.

When first playing MMO's I just assumed everyone was the gender they played - still don't get why men would want to roll a female char - just seems strange to me, played my husbands char once ( a male ) and it felt really weird lol

I may just be old fashioned, but I wouldn't call what you did dating. You did the equivalent of calling a 1-900 number and found out the voice on the other end was a man.

Never ever trust anyone online. Meeting and interacting with others on a friendly level is one thing. I'll never understand how anyone could hook up with someone else over the internet and take it seriously.

As for those saying voice-chat would have prevented this: Not necessarily. I knew a guy a few years ago that could sound exactly like a girl. He could switch his voice mid sentence and go from a burly man to a sultry woman. It was kind of freaky.

There's team speak apps that can distort your voice and make you sound male or female.

I knew this guy IRL. Like I said... freaky. He was a bit weird too.

Here's a little known fact about the word dude, it's actually a 19th century word that was used as a derogatory term to describe people that were over the top with regards to keeping up with the latest fashion. I have no idea how it became an alternative to mate in recent years.

Kind of like the term "Dandy"?

1. She had a small scar on her arm (Hey, no problem)
2. She was scared (It's ok. We all feel that way at some point. It's one of the things that makes us human)
3. She thought I was cute and showed my picture to most of her friends (Not worried too much. Flattered if anything!)
4. She was a man (Well sometimes we.. wait, what?)

And that's how I dated a man for 3 months.

I worked with a girl who called me "mate" and "dude". It seems to be the ones with a lot of guy friends that are more prone to this type of behaviour I find.

She used to wear flannel shirts and talk like a dude (not her voice, just the mannerisms). Made me feel like the girl in the relationship.

That being said flannel shirts are awesome if you wear it right and can pull it off in a non-butch way! Don't hate on the flannel!

Lol yeah, flannels are totally fine, but when a girl wears baggy jeans and flannels while calling you "mate", it's kind of demoralising

Me too, but I find the rain here cold and happens in small amounts over large periods of time, so it's just inconvenient! The rain in Australia was warm, and it would rain for hours on end. It was really beautiful.
In my town, whenever it started raining you'd see everyone rush outside xD

In short, when you end up playing a game for 500-1000+ hours most guys would rather stare at female character model than a male one. Also, there are those guys who want to try to get free stuff from unsuspecting male players in busy towns. Some people do it simply because they wanted to.

I'm a male player who just spent 400+ hours leveling a Male Dunmer DK to max level. I have female characters as well as male because I love badass female roles in movies, novels and games. They're way more interesting than male roles in my opinion!
