Actually it's the American way to say it. Rooster is an American slang term that references the way cockerels roost, which has also spread to Aus and NZ, but they are still officially called Cockerels all over the world. They're technically not even the same thing, Rooster actually refers to an old Cockerel (usually over the one year maturity stage) that has been left to "roost".1 -
