magicka Dragon Knights seem to be the best from what i have observed... with Stamina templar's in second place.

You must be joking right?
Nightblades, especially stamina NB's are all about doing high damage and killing opponents before they can react.
NB's passives gives bonuses doing damage from stealth and high burst.
Best choices for stamina NB is imperial (good passives for health too) redguard (all about stamina) bosmer (awesome regen and stealth damage bonus) and khajiit (stealth damage + crit bonus)
Other hard-hitting class is sorcs, even with all the nerfs.

Altmer Sorcerer for single target.
Breton Magicka NB for AoE and group support.
Dunme Magicka DKs only really excel in trials.
The best setup we've found for groups in Hodor is:
Magicka based DK/NB tank
Templar healer
Magicka Sorcerer for it's massive single target damage output on bosses
Magicka NB for it's nice AoE, decent single target, defensive Veil ulti and Funnel Health healing support
Overall I think your friend is better off with a magicka NB. When he reaches around 300 CP he can run the same build and both tank or DPS just by switching gear. They have really good solo potential and awesome support for a group. Also if he ever decides to PvP, NBs are really well off right now.
On the other hand if he only cares about doing as much DPS on a single target fight then Sorcerers are currently king
Yeah magicka DK right now, but then they'll patch something and stamina templar (or whatever) will be on top.
Tell your friend to roll what he thinks is the coolest. All classes have many ups and downs during the life span of a game.
Breton Magicka NB for AoE and group support.

Out of curiosity, what AoE abilities does a Magicka NB bring that makes them best in that regard? Every time I'm in a PuG with my healer or tank and we have 2 NB DPS the AoE damage is severely lacking. Are they all stamina based? Or maybe Cyrodiil refugees? Or does NB attract 99% of the nubs? It's seriously getting to the point where I'm not even going to bother doing a PuG vet run with 2 NB's anymore.
