Getting Pulled Back Through Base Door in Sewers

So I had something weird happen to me yesterday in Imperial City Sewers.

I was on the way back to base through the sewers after completing one of the district dailies, and I noticed someone saying in /zone that there were reds and a banner boss right outside the base entrance. Naturally I went into sneak mode as I approached, and saw that yes indeed, there was a group of reds running around out there battling any AD folks coming out from the base. They had clearly pulled the banner boss over there to add to the mayhem.

OK, no worries, I decided I'd wait for my opportunity to stealthily get past them to the door at a moment when they're on the other side of the room and there are no AOEs in the area around the door (engaging them would have been suicide, as there were far more of them than there were friendlies). I stayed in stealth waiting and watching for my opportunity.

I saw my chance, popped an invisibility pot, ran to the door and hit E to enter. My character's hand goes out, the door does it's opening animation, and the screen goes dark briefly before showing me on the other side of the door. I made it! Except that I only saw myself on the other side of the door for less than a second before I was suddenly back outside the base, whereupon I was no longer invisible, and I got swarmed by half a dozen enemy players, and killed before I could react.

So what the hell happened? I wouldn't mind if one of the enemy players spotted me with a detection pot or something and got me into combat before I entered the door - that was a risk I was aware of, and I was actually fully expecting it to happen. But that's not what happened. I wasn't in combat, there was no AOE on the door, and I actually got through to the other side before I was suddenly back in the thick of it.

It's not a big deal - I was only carrying a little under 200 stones at the time, so it's not like I'm out much. I'm just confused about how it happened.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?

It sounds to me like they've found a sneaky way of killing players unfairly by using the boss, because the boss being there, aggroing everybody in its radius has most likely caused it to drag you back through the door like "Hey, you're supposed to be fighting me here!" ....

I bet those players have done it to a few others too. They seem to be onto something, enough for them to stay there, doing that.

Hmm, I didn't even think about it somehow being the boss pulling me back. If that's what did it, I wonder if it's intentional for the banner bosses to be able to pull you back even if you're not considered in combat. Also, if that's what did it, then it definitely sounds like an exploit. I thought they just dragged the boss there to make it riskier for AD players coming out from the base to engage them...

Had this happen before but it was lag + hitting E more than once. You go in and come right back out.

I definitely only hit E once though, because it did the animation right away...

Yes. The boss prevents area travel. Especially fun when you get into the case where the area boss becomes immune to direct damage and can only be hit by AoE damage. I have seen that happen several times right outside base camp.

IMO, players that do that should get a month long vacation from IC. There are door locks that can actually be put to good use for a change.
Due to a typo in the system, the area was accosted by the Daedric Prince Moar Lag Brawls.

How did that happen damn if you are already on the other side a boss shouldn't be able to do anything to you. sounds to me like a DK may have chained you at just the right moment when you where transitioning.

That was the first thing I thought, but I didn't see any chain animation, chains didn't show up on my death recap, and don't they count as a CC? Because I didn't get CC'd - I just got slaughtered as I was desperately starting to run away. Maybe it was chains though.

If it's true that the bosses prevent area travel (which I didn't know, but it would make sense), then I think this is probably what happened. Maybe I wasn't quite close enough to the boss for it to register right as I hit E, but he came close enough while I was still transitioning from one area to the other, and I ended up back outside.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me on the first day of IC release day. I made it to the door, the reds were on the other side of the hall at the entrance no where near me. I was able to click on the door and I got the animation like you had and was on the other side of the door for a split second and then all of a sudden I was on flung back out into the fight and I lost 2000 stones. I've hated IC since.
Far too many characters to list any more.

It's the bane of online gaming. Your client was out of sync with the server. To give the illusion that the game is running smoothly the client is allowed to do certain things out of sync with the server. However at some point the two need to get back in synch. What likely happened is by grabbing the door handle you alerted the boss to your presence, the client continued with the animation (note that going thru that door does *NOT* change zones -- more on that later) thus the client is free to play the door animation/transition. But the server decided you are still in combat. Now for that "same zone" thing. If you want some real grief get one of the bosses that spams AoE all over the place chasing you and manage to get thru the door. It's possible though difficult. Then run into the base room where everyone else is standing and watch as the boss AoE fills the lobby and kills players in your own base. :pensive: I did this by accident once. I thought I had escaped only to kill a dozen players in the AD base. ZOS -- where bugs kill you, other players, and reporting them gets them fixed in 18 months -- if you're lucky.

How very odd, and irritatingly exploity. I wouldn't have thought that it was possible to pull bosses out of their area, and maybe it should be set so they cannot be. By "area", I mean the named sections of the sewers that pop up in the centre of the screen; "Entered: Training Grounds". If not confining them to their areas, then they should at least not be able to be pulled to the base entry area.

The base entry area really needs some NPC guards as well; ideally they should be positioned on the raised section. Why are the alliances not defending their bases?
