How do you tank?

yes I've tried doing those at veteran level too as well and its noticabely difficult. But not as much so as certain higher dungeons. The biggest one I'm having a problem with is the dlc dungeons and the higher lvl dungeon areas that are now going veteran. Those mobs are doing rediculous points of damage to the point where its instant killing me with my best set up and a tank tonic to boost.

I think that pinpoints the issue right there. The two new dungeons, set to veteran are leagues beyond the difficulty of say Wayrest Sewers on veteran. If you're getting hit harder in these dungeons, it's not you. Everyone is getting hit harder there. Yes, there are people that will come into this thread with their "L2P" statements but at low vet levels with the gear you have, those two new dungeons will pose a massive challenge.

Agreed. IC dungeons are basically for folks who can run the previous end game dungeons in their sleep.

I'd also be shocked if anyone saying Vet leveled dungeons are a cakewalk doesn't have at least 3x your Champion points and likely closer to 10x or more. That's not to say you're too weak to play yet, but rather than it will get better as you go up in level both because you'll be higher level and because you'll have lots more CP to work with, so it's kind of a double acceleration of your power as you play more.

    Ok.. lets compile your answers:
yes I do block, almost all the time short of taunts and cc's, and I'm seeing that damage on everything all dungeons i partake in are rediculous it seems like. For example the brand new dlc dungeons I ran it made to first boss he 3 shotted me while i was in werewolf form blocking thats 27k magic resist roughly 26k armor

I don't see roll-dodge in here anywhere or in any of your posts. ESO is designed for players, INCLUDING TANKS, to MOVE OUT OF THE RED CIRCLES. That means, a boss winds up for an AOE pound, the TANK moves out of the circle too. Same with fire circles, falling rocks, poison circles, whatever.
Direfrost keep's boss for example if she lands a heavy attack on me blocked will do 9k, basics do 3k blocked, 8k unblocked, unblocked heavy's will instant kill me. this is on normal mode for veteran dungeons, I've done a veteran once and I will die instantly to anything that hits me from a boss If I'm not blocking sometimes will instant kill me while blocking at full hp. Also yes my gears fully repaired.

She is landing a blow for half your health with a normal blow, WHILE YOU BLOCK? Are you sure you are not out of stamina and you were just "holding down" the block key? With the changes that came with IC, if you are holding block, you DO NOT regen stamina, so holding block constantly WILL KILL YOU. They changed the game to make you only hold up block when a blow is actually coming. Again, do you have ANY crit resist armor on? That sounds much more like a crit instead of a heavy.
I did fail to mention this is on xbox one not on pc.

Yes. It means unless you read way back in the forums, you are making rookie mistakes that tanks who have been playing for six months know better than, like not moving out of red AOE circles.
probabely, its not so much the surviving thats bothering me but how much damage im taking per hit. every hit i take is minimum 3k and all boss fights its a near instant death scenario. everything can be going fine and ill just drop dead to a "20,000" attack thats been doing 8k every time before.

SERIOUSLY sounds like that mob landed a crit hit on you.
its a 1h/1h build, no 2h involved, its pure tank setup. I'm just tanking normal dungeons some undaunted regulars I'm the party leader so everything's ranked to me.

Yeah, when I looked again, I saw that both bars had 1H skills on them. THAT is part of your problem too. As a DK, your GDB heals for a lot more with a resto staff and resto passives. You are NOT healing yourself, at ALL, pretty much. You need AT LEAST Mutagen on your bar, with the nerf GBD took this last patch, and the resto passives. As a DK, if I do tank, its 1HS on one bar, resto on the other.
also i pick a mostly health build simply because anything less then that and basic skills tend to one shot even while blocking. I know that makes 0 sense but its the same for my friend he likes to tank on occasion. and he goes balanced dies instantly on the side all the time. Hes flustered as hell with tanking as well.

Mostly health is fine. Makes a huge pool for a boss to chew through. HP also increases the strength of your shields. HOWEVER, it also means you have a huge pool that has to be replenished. You need to be working to keep it replenish constantly. You currently have for heals.

GDB: Heal 30% of MISSING health + increased Health regen for 20 sec ( at 20K health, If you hit at 14K, you get 2K plus regen. Hit at 8K Health, you get 4K heal plus regen.)

    and NOTHING ELSE.

You need to change some morphs. You seemed to, for some reason, morphed everything to do more damage. As a tank, you need to increase your defenses.

Obsidian shards needs to go away.. you already have a CC, a root, talons.

Obsidian Shields needs replace it, so you get another damage shield, which will also help your group. Morph it to Igneous Shields to give you increased mending when you hit your GDB and other heals. It may not be as good as Bone Shards on your group, but, they also dont have to press E to activate it.

Unstable Flame needs to be unmorphed back base, then to Burning Embers, again, to give you a 30% heal of the damage done, at the end.

You need to put Flame Lash and or Deep Breath on your bar somewhere for more heal. I like the interrupt for casting mobs on Deep Breath, but.. Flame Lash is good single target DPS.

For passives, you need Kindling, Searing Heat, (More damage from Burning Embers means more heal at end), Iron Skin (more block), Burning Heat (increase Inc Healing, inc GDB, by 12%), Elder Dragon (5% MORE healing), Scaled Armor (More spell resist), Eternal Mountain (increases sheild duration 20%), Helping Hands (Restore Sta when active shields, INCLUDES WHILE BLOCKING.)

Pierce Armor needs a reset to morph to Ransack to increase your AC even more.

Make sure you have passives: Sword and Board (Increase Block 20%), Fortress (Decrease Block cost 30%) Also, armor passives Also, Heavy Armor passives: Resolve (Armor/Spell Resist 3% per heavy armor piece), Constitution (Increased 4% HEALTH regen, plus Sta and Mag when hit), Juggernaut (Inc Health by 1% per heavy), Bracing (Red Sta cost of blocking with 5 pc heavy) Rapid Mending (Inc Healing received by 1% per piece)
also yes, I used to be a magicka vampire build which i actually enjoyed greatly, the vampire ults a great life saver which i may revert back too. despite the fire vulnerability. But as a whole surviving was just as bad.

The DLC dungeons.. well.. did you notice they nerfed them when the Devs played in ESO Live? Yeah, they are still being adjusted. (Read that as field tested.) Dont judge ANYTHING by new content until its been out a FEW MONTHS.
I'm just not sure at this point if I'm just a bad tank or if they're genuinely broken.

If EVERY TANK in the forums was in here saying they were broke.. maybe.. and the Sta regen not happening while blocking got that responce. But.. no.. they are not broken. However, the changes with IC made it much harder if you are not fully devoted to doing it right.
Power level to CP160 in a week:
Where is the end game? You just played it.
Why don't I have 300+ skill points? Because you skipped content along the way.
    Where is new content? Sigh.

He has way more CP than I do lol. Very informative about the dungeons though. Im waiting till I hit vet 6 before I try to solo city of ash again.

For the OP yeah new dungeons are suppose to be the hardest ones, no dlc for me quite yet, waiting for a bit more levels before I try. Older dungeons can still be difficult even on normal mode for a soloer. To me everything seems as it should be

you do know this is for a veteran rank 3 right not 14/16?

Yes I said in the post you can do so at VR1. Putting attributes into health ( Not all but a healthy sum. The rest into stamina) and health enchants and food will get you to 30k hp.

@dreamfarer No i dont think its insane to think you can get to that much health. Considering food is about half of it. Also if you think 20k is fine to tank vet dungeons ill beg to differ as most dps and healers will be around 16k or so. putting yourself a stepping stone above them wont help much vs 1shots or crazy fights.

Im speaking in terms of ps4 not PC.

There's so many way to tank, not always with blocking, but it's sure the easiest one, especially pre 1.7.
But if you want to do that, DK is the easiest (and maybe the best) class, so you're in the right track.
First of all, try to constantly regen ultimate, magma armor is best tanking ultimate.
When in the effect of magma armor, never block, try to recover your health & stamina.
Next, just do like other suggest you in this thread.

About the healer, my healing toons (templar) can heal DK about 7k per ritual of rebirth when in vet 2, and he can spam it all day long, and combine it with mutagen, purifying ritual, and occasional spear shard.

If you're not self healing tank: try to find decent healer, communicate with them, and use coagulated blood (8% healing taken) + burning heart (12% healing taken) + heavy armor (up to 7% healing taken) to makes healer's job easier. Use healing taken set also help a lot.

Lastly, I think it's better try to maximizing your level and/or gear first, there's many leveling and farming guide in the forum/youtube.
Blocking tank will exponentially better at the end game, especially after you invest in the right gear.

    That's it!
Pre 1.7 don't really require you fully devoted to tanking to be a good tank
Sorry, let's rephrase that, pre 1.7 if you fully devoted tank, your tankiness won't be far ahead of other average player that want try to be a tank.

So what's lacking in pre 1.7 actually is the tanking content for the devoted one. Actually ZoS can do better than nerf blocking this way, but it's sure the easiest one.
Many people in this forum loves easy think, but they just disagree when other do that.

Ya i always dodge the red aoes/ circle/cones etc. It's just so basic didn't feel the need to mention it. As for blocking I'm positive of those stats. Check death cap monitored my stamina very closely. I'll be at 3/4 stamina or 1/2 when i take those hits and it will happen with bosses.
