The maintenance, again, is to prepare the server for the update. This means they are implementing the update now for us to download after they are done.

    You don't understand this.

YOU don't understand this. The servers are down because they are adding the patch to the server for you to download, you can't download it before that because the launcher connects to the server to get the patch and the patch is not on the server yet.

The client patch downloads from playstation network no? Thats completely different to the game server itself, go figure.

Where do you think PSN gets the patch from /rolleyes

Yeah and who do you think can upload it while they mess about with the server? Come on...

It doesn't work like that, PSN streams the patch from the game server, it's not uploaded to PSN, it works on a stream, if the game servers aren't running the patch then PSN can't retrieve the patch. In the case of ESO patches PSN works like a middle man passing the data from one side (servers) to the other (you).

So patch server is the same server as logging in and the actually game servers your telling me? All 1 server for everything?

Yes and no, patch servers aren't the same servers as the game servers as such, but they're a different cluster of the whole server, however they have to be the same version of the patch as the game servers or they won't work properly. We already do actually get the updates before the game servers actually go online if you look at it, it's just not a long time before.

My point is i think we should get these sooner, there has to be a way round what you say goes as it works fine elsewhere.

I have never seen an mmo that releases their patches before they patch their servers, it causes too many issues. The only variation of this is some games when an expansion s released will download pre-patch files to your client up to a few days before hand to make the patch smaller.

It would be fine if psn wasn't a complete piece of trash. Slowest donwload speeds known to man my PC can download 150 gigs faster than my ps4 can download 5. Both on a wired connection

I've played almost all of the mainstream mmo's (worked CS on a couple too), and I haven't seen any of them allow you to patch until at least a couple of hours after the downtime starts.
