They allowed you to download the patch as they update the server.

Hes correct that maintenance is for patching the server BUT we can patch our clients while they do their server. I'm tall enough thanks.

Once the server has been patched, they need to test that the client patch works before they can roll it out for client download. If the client patch went out at the same time as the server was updated, and something went wrong internally with the server update, clients would be screwed when trying to connect, meaning they would need a second patch to fix the error, which would take longer than it would have if the client patch was not downloaded until after it was verified.
(Pretty much this exact thing happened with patch 1.5.3 on PC - the client download went out early, which bugged the EU server to Oblivion, and rolled-back some of the intended fixes for NA. We had to wait 3 days for 1.5.4 to go out to fix this.)

it was the same way for xbox heres what I did came home from work on lunch started download and was ready when I came home from work. idk y but they don't get things ready for updates ahead of time like other console games can or do. maybe its the way the system is set up for their servers but im no genius about that kind of things

Um. They do test it on a test server. Problem with that is the test server isn't the LIVE BUILD.

They probably have to do it this way because if they did it the way you are saying then players might install their patch before the server is updated.

Then those play cry saying that they need to download the game again.

Maybe they could put something on the patch that says don't apply until.....

But then that leads to other issues probably.

So this is probably the best way to do it without creating more issues.

well never know tho it could just be how the server is set up. ik that's how a lot of the pc game servers are so could be why but who knows.

If I understand this correctly; the PS4 auto-updater is not in use be ESOTU for updates? So to patch the game you actually have to launch it; and wait while it updates just like those of us for PC/Mac?

If that is correct I'd say it needs to be re-mediated in the future; I'd like to think the developers take advantage of tools like the auto-updater for the PS4 and related features of benefit on both consoles. I play PC but own a PS4 copy.

No PS4 auto-updater is used but not utilised until they finish maintenance basically.

It doesn't work like that, PSN streams the patch from the game server, it's not uploaded to PSN, it works on a stream, if the game servers aren't running the patch then PSN can't retrieve the patch. In the case of ESO patches PSN works like a middle man passing the data from one side (servers) to the other (you).

The update is actually only 5GB. When you start your download, it'll say it's downloading a total of 19GB. However, once you start, it should jump up to 14GB pretty quickly, then download the new 5GB patch.

Yes and no, patch servers aren't the same servers as the game servers as such, but they're a different cluster of the whole server, however they have to be the same version of the patch as the game servers or they won't work properly. We already do actually get the updates before the game servers actually go online if you look at it, it's just not a long time before. They patch all the servers and test it internally, then they bring the patch server public so you can download while they carry out other maintenance.
