People wanting to randomly trade in-game

Why do people do it?

Yesterday running a dungeon some guy comes up to me and requests to trade. I ask him what he's actually wanting to trade and he had no idea. I closed the trade screen and went on my way and got a mouthful of abuse (was actually funny tbf) for being a spoilt brat.

My point is i suppose, it's helpful if people know what you're actually wanting to trade rather than just hit trade and hope for the best. After all, people aren't mind readers.

I give them a single unit of whatever provisioning materials I happen to have on me at the time, or a fish.

I had someone keep trying to open a trade screen with me a couple of weeks back whilst I was fishing, I too asked about it here and general consensus was that it was some sort of scam.

I pity the poor guy who accidentally misclicked on me in the bank today and got an earful as a result (to be fair, I had been being spammed by "join my guild" invites every time I stood still for more than 30 seconds and my patience was worn very thin by that point). I did talk with the guy after and straightened things out, I hope we parted on good terms!

But yes, getting randoms trying to trade with you and random guild invites from people who don't bother to try to talk to you but just spam you with an invite every few minutes while you are banking or crafting can get really tedious.

I had mats, 2 dwemer motifs and a host of other stuff, yet he didn't have a clue what he wanted to trade even though he initiated the trade. I have no idea if these people are after free gold or high end mats (he was vet 5 so I doubt it), but I wasn't standing around for 10 mins until he made up his mind. It seems he wasn't for giving me anything either and was probably hoping for some sort of hand out. Even if he had asked for 5k rather than just stand there looking gormless, I'd have given him something.

I had someone drop 696K gold into the trade trying to show off, luckily I was quick of the mark and someone lost a lifetimes worth of gaming gold that day, he chased and chased and chased after me trying to get it back, that'll learn him to try and troll / show off.

I hope you don't think this shows you in a good light , you stole 696k from someone . If I was that person I would have followed you to the ends of oblivion for that kind of money then reported you for the thief you are . Perhaps the person made a genuine mistake in trying to input a figure in the add gold , this is easy done . For you to take advantage of that then run away with his money says a lot more about your character than his . Shame on you .

Don't be daft, scams like this go on all the time - someone briefly drops some money in the box then retracts it while you are adding goods to trade for the now non-existent money that was shown.

Most people who randomly open trade with you uninvited are looking to scam you out of something.

Yeah and two wrongs make a right WRONG what he did was no better than the SCAM you described . Not every random trader is trying to scam you . I try a lot of random trading because having only 30 spaces in a guild store is pathetically low and there is no other way , other than selling to npc dealers for the pathetic pittance they offer you of disposing of goods . So don't try and defend this by saying most people are trying to scam in open trading so it's ok to scam them first . And in answer to your first question - no , I am not daft.

Join more trade guilds then, 5 guild slots, 30 trade slots each, should be plenty.

Apparently he didn't scam you, on the opposite, he hit the conform bottom.
Besides, I heard ZOS has a team to trace large amount of gold transaction...well, I wonder what would happen.

It's not about being cynical, it's about being annoyed with people keep pinging me whilst I am trying to do something, usually they don't even bother trying to talk to me - just 'ping' and the notification pops up, then 'ping' again a few seconds later. I get that these days with cellphones we are expected to answer everyone who tries to contact us even if they are just marketing firms, but... no... if you can't be bothered to talk to me and just ping me with trade notifications when I am trying to do something, just bug off.

I don't mind people wanting to trade, there are some genuine people out there. Did a cave quest when finished the person who was doing the same quest asked to trade, he gave me all the armour drops he collected, said he likes to help other players.I would however find it annoying if faced with the same situation as the op.

As for the 696k gold, I am of the thinking it was a genuine mistake.
Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid.

Oh the situation you describe where you have been questing and someone wants to trade loot or give you something that they don't need is different though, that is a really nice thing.

Standing fishing and being repeatedly pinged so you keep missing your reel in cue, and the person doesn't respond when you try to talk to them and just keeps pinging the trade request every few seconds (and yes I have experienced this) - it's just griefing.

Well for a start it wasn't me who was involved in this, I think you are getting me confused with someone else in the thread. So enough of using the term 'you' directed at me as if I was involved. But what was described is used as a scam by people. Drop money in the trade box and take it out while they are looking through their inventory for goods to put up for the money then taking the goods without payment is a well known scam. It may have been a mistake in this instance, but it was a very unfortunate one given that people do this deliberately to try to get free stuff from people.

I didn't mean you as in YOU , I'm aware you were not the "culprit" but you seemed to defend this action because that is what is going on in random trading . I was just trying to point out that what that person did was no better than the people trying to scam . I do agree that it goes on far too often and I might ruffle a few feathers here but when I do come across the people who try submitting nothing , hoping to catch you out on an accidental or naiive submit seem to usually be high vet players.

I enjoy going to starter areas and giving away motifs or food/recipes.....occasionally gold. Many players will not trade, its true, as they are among the suspicious like those replying to this post.

I remember starting out with nothing...not having the first clue of what to do in this game once freed from Cold Harbour, no gold and crap weapons and armor I picked up during the tutorial.

Running into someone like me who would hand me helpful items without expectation of recompense would have been a great confidence booster in the perception of player integrity...but no such good fortune for me. I started doing it on my own as my wealth and supply of goods exceeded my wants and needs, and it has for me been a rewarding experience.

So, in spite of all the bad that does occur when people prey on each other in this game, I will continue to be generous and not apologize for it.

It's not even about suspicion, it's about STOP PINGING ME WITH YOUR TRADE NOTIFICATION, I AM BUSY. Why do you even think my lvl 5 character would need whatever you are offering, when I (and any other "poor lowbie" you decide to bestow charity on) may already have Vet Rank characters and more goods and cash than they know what to do with?

EDIT: I mean really, someone pinged me more than 20 times whilst I was trying to fish and didn't respond when I asked him what he wanted to trade, I was pinged 8 times in the bank today - leave me alone!

Good to see there are still some compassionate people around . Just make sure you don't make a mistake in your input or some thieving git (see one of the above posts) will run away with it and think that it's acceptable .

Someone tried to trade my mate one singular carrot yesterday. I wonder was he warning us about the IC gear grind update coming to consoles through vegetable symbolism.

Or, you know, I may be going out on a limb here - but how about using /say or /tell to actually talk to someone?

Every experience that I have recounted on this thread has been on PC - where people ARE able to use text chat to talk to the person they are standing next to, but instead decide to repeatedly ping them with trade notifications every few seconds over and over and over again - maybe that may make it a bit clearer as to why I consider it griefing.

If someone asks in chat for someone to trade, or even whispers me directly asking I'll reply.

If someone just randomly tries to initiate trade without ever speaking to me beforehand I'll ignore them. Same with guild invites, friends list invites, people trying to add me to parties and so on. In my experience (both in this game and in others) most are just spamming everyone in the area hoping for someone to respond.

Part of the reason I stopped accepting them is that more than once I've accepted a party or trade invite only to have the other person cancel it immediately afterwards. Once one of them told me they were "testing" who is a botter on behalf of the GMs and I was lucky I accepted or my account would have been banned but I'm completely sure they were lying.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect someone to speak to you and tell you what they're asking for instead of just issuing demands though an automated system.

Ah , consoles don't have that so unless they are on area chat we are basically screwed . Short of searching for the person with the psn and trying to pm him , not much can be done . That's probably why these scams are so easily done because the easiest way to let someone know how much you want for an item is to put a price in the add gold box so they can see it then retract the figure . Txt chat is definitely missing but there are plenty of threads on that issue already. I still stand by my opinion of the person who stole 696k then ran away.

You can view profile and then send message in the same option screen. This works on PS4 not sure about Xbox.
