It's not a port ZOS made the Console version from the ground up so it would not feel like a port get your fact straight.

Also why don't you all make a new thread ask for it in the next Patch. The Imperial City patch is already done and just waiting for approval by this point. If they stop the Console Version Release I promise you a lot more players will leave then those you all say will leave because of the lack of text chat.

The premise still remains that text chat should have been on console.

Also what they did for the game is called platform localization. It means ZOS reworked the way players interact with the UI to better support controller input. This happens with most games going from PC to console and vica versa. Remaking it from the ground up would mean they didn't reuse anything from art assets to voice acting. That is clearly not the case. They also bothered heavily from Skyrim's UI, so more than likely those elements were recycled and touched up, rather then newly made.

Also note that through use of basic remapping programs PC can, even with out direct developer support, use a controller to play.

Just to comment on the text chat and UI pieces...

I don't understand why many feel that text chat "should" be on console and don't follow the logic of "keyboard use with a controller" on consoles. The added dialogue from ZOS on the subject for two occasions gave perspectives and reasons why their teams create the presentation that we have today. I've still not seen a logic based comment on why it "should have been included". There are lots of opinions of why and those tend to stem from prior game experiences, this on PC and or someone else's possible handicap. What is your "reason" it should have been included?

The reference to them not remaking the game from the ground up....
-The console versions in regards to the user experiences and what is seen on the screen are per ZOS crafted from the ground up....and then re-done during the 12+ month delays. Just because they chose to use some existing data doesn't exclude the reality that the console versions were built from the ground up. Development for all three was going on at the same time through many different teams. All teams pulled and excluded work for teams for their projects for the platforms they were assigned to.

You don't have to use keyboard on controller. A free or used 2 dollar keyboard from goodwill works perfect on console.you should try it it is amazing.

In context a human cannot use both a controller and a keyboard simultaneously.
-even with keypads, your functions move from controlling a character to typing
-Using a controller and a keyboard makes its more awkward and complex

For these realities...why do people feel text chat "should" have been launched with consoles?

Who is going to try to use a controller and a keyboard at the same time? Anyone that thinks they can type and move their character around at the same time deserves to be frustrated, because the notion is just dumb. You use the controller when you are moving around and doing things. You type on a keyboard when you don't need to move around. Simple.

I don't know about you, but I am quite capable of using a controller for playing and a keyboard for typing. Been doing that with my PC for years. It's not a new concept at all.

You still have not used any good reason why optional text chat should not be added to consoles. Your convenient voice chat isn't going anywhere, so why is it an issue for you if others choose to use a keyboard to communicate with others? These people already cannot communicate with you so it should really make no difference to you one way or another.

    - You will not be forced to use a keyboard or to text chat.

    - You will not be forced to see a text window if you choose not to.

It's like you want to force people to use voice chat or be left out of the community completely. Many reasons have already been given why some people can't use voice chat. If these people cannot communicate with others in the game, then ESO is nothing but a single player experience that will become stale quickly.
look above the comment I'm quoting. I replied to another user.

I see many are implying practical use of a feature without the reality of the limitation of use on console.

Also please understand as I've said many times...you're aren't arguing against me.
My stance just happens to fall with what exists in-game today and what was marketed all along for console by ZOS...NEVER did they present a text chat box for consoles in any video or interview publicly. There is a Playstation post where someone from ZOS was coming from a position of lacking factual and up to date information that seemingly has confused the PlayStation console community...sorry if you were a part of that which was cleared up months ago.

My opinion and points of view are not your obstacle. I've tried to involve those who do want text chat or some other form of communication on consoles to create an argument to ZOS that isn't along the lines of something they've decided against int he past.

"I see many are implying the practical use of a feature without the reality of the limitation of use on console"

What limitations? I've been using my keyboard on PS4 and PS3 for several years now.

One example is where people are saying what you are...
You're only typing on a keyboard but (in this game) you nor can anyone else type and play with a keyboard on console for this game.
-Its not practical to offer a method of communication via keyboard or keypad on console without the opportunity to play and type. Its not practical to play and then lay down the controller and pick up a keyboard to type and then go back to picking up the controller.

Another example is where some are suggesting to add a text box onto the screen.
-while there could be options to enable and disaable the box, there is no practical way to manage the window.
Yes you could use the keyboard to start typing and stop/send but that's a very poor experience.

The benefits on PC are using both mouse and keyboard with left and right clicks to link items, reply, whisper, open menu's manage the box during gameplay, change colors, highlight, copy n paste, scrolls up and down.

None of these functions are practical and even through discussion no one has been able to offer a practical way of doing this so we moved to discussing the idea within a social menu as to enable much of the controller as options to each obstacle identified.
Then some notable users began bashing the idea saying if its got to be just like PC and not within a menu. It pushed those away who do want the feature who are open to alternative ideas to get great experiences and functionality.

..... people have used keyboards with console game for the past 15-20 years... so how is it all of a sudden "impractical" now?

20 years of console gaming debunk all your arguments.

If as you say its not practical, then why would ZOS even consider adding controller support to the PC version? Those using a controller on PC must also lay down the controller, then use a keyboard to type, then go back to picking up the controller as well, dont they?

And this would be the one (and probably only one lol) point where I understand what youre saying and agree.
I am 100% for text chat in console version, but honestly I even was smh at a couple of the responses basically saying 'Absolutely not, it must be exactly as PC, meaning everything must be able to be done from the game screen and not going into the menu'
If you believe that, then fine, but how about also explain how it could be done then, especially without a mouse? And even further, without a keyboard (as some console players dont have one, but can still type with their controllers).
I believe its one thing to really want something, but at some point one must realize the limitations (or at least have a plan to overcome them) that are in the way of getting what you want and adapt. This shouldnt be an issue, if in the end you still can get a workable form of what it is you wanted.
This is how I see it anyway, or maybe its just because I really dont mind if I have to use menu to set up a text chat box. I use menu everytime I check my inventory. I use it when I check my journal. I use it everytime I have to go in and turn off *** voice chat because the game keeps switching it back on.. I have no intention of setting up, or typing, into text chat while playing simultaneously, so I have no issue with pausing my character and entering a menu screen to do this.
As long as I have a text chat box scrolling along on my main screen so I can just monitor the text chat while playing, even if I have to jump into the menu to reply, I could be still happy with this..

You know this argument makes no sense right the Devs of those two games are not the same.Just because they did it doesnt meam it's a good design. Also IMO its not really as functional as the PC version.

I would like to add something again before I go back to respond to poster who was kind enough to respond to me and give me information I didn't have before. I would again recommend making a new thread because if they do add it and it push the IC patch back even more you will *** a lot of console PVPers off.Especially since this is mainly a PVE player need. Yes it can help out PVP to but most PVPers will be in voice chat while in groups anyway.I think you all should create a new thread because PVPers will leave.Trust me I talked to them and asked they hate to be treated like second class citizens and that's happening with the patch being released two weeks after PC.Also we aren't able to test it out on consoles either.

Also I agree with the person who said you can have it on your screen but to type in it you have to go to the social menu to use it so no one makes a mistake while using a controller and jump into the box while in PVP or during a Trial. So o think you all should discuss a way for it to work and not just say it worked for this game so it will work here. When all games are created and DNA are different.

Both FF:ARR and DCUO would disprove your comment about practicality of console controllers and keyboards and window management.

They are action based console mmos.... you know... just like eso....

So his argument makes perfect sense. And yours is void as a dead mans bowels.

Ok I just have to ask..How do you use the controller, if the keyboard is in your hand?
Doesnt the controller require 2 hands on it to play? If the keyboard is already in one hand, by my count you dont have enough hands left to continue playing while you type?

Scroll up. It was answered there...
    ....
On PC you can actually play with the keyboard as it functions as a controller. Console does not offer this option and is not fully possible

In reality voice does not always work which is only one of many reasons text is needed.

Yes I know I played both plus ESO.You are basically made at COD because their knifes Kills are not like Battlefield. Their both shooters on consoles so why don't they have the same knife kills animation. The reason ESO doesn't have it is because the Devs are different and so they decided to not do the same thing as those two MMO. So sir when you can make a real argument please comeback.

Ok what's causing voice chat to be down?
Is text chat a solution or is it also going to be available and not available at times as well?
Is text chat going to be primary vs voice cause if it's only for niche use then it's of little value and importance in the grand scheme. Other opportunities can fix the issue

I'm trying to get you to think throroughly through this because saying give me something else cause voice chat sometimes isn't working may not offer resolution until first fully understanding why voice chat isn't working.

To me the priority is resolving the voice chat issues.

I was simply providing two examples of console MMOs that have text chat enabled by default....the fact that they were developed by different people is neither here nor there.

If it's not practical for console gamers to put their controller down and pick up a keyboard, how on earth did text chat get into those games...let alone become the primary method of communication?

It's ready in available in the form of ps4 messages. Personally I'd rather you worked on voice chat. It sucks. Even Destiny chat seems amazingly better than voice chat in eso. Also please give us the option to have world chat off. Nothing more annoying than to login to hear some jackhd jabbering away.

In reality voice does not always work which is only one of many reasons text is needed.

What specific examples are you referencing?
It helps us all hear your point of view in context

When the voice chat is down.....

To me the priority is resolving the voice chat issues.

.... you are clueless when it comes to mmos. Its a shame.

Let me simplify some stuff for you.

Voice and text chat are ways to communicate in a mmo. Both are good in dufferent situations. It is inevitable in an mmo for voice chat to go down, it happens often, and when it does text chat is there to keep communication going. And vice versa. This is the reality of mmos. This stuff happens.

But in eso.... when voice goes down.... ALL communication is down. It doesnt matter how good the servers are, doesnt matter how optimal they are performing, these things will happen.

Having multiple forms of communication is great in a game like this, and this situation is just ONE of MANY reasons why text chat is needed and should be implemented.

Your weak arguments blow over like a heap of dry leaves in a wind storm. Come with some substance and logic next time please.

    What argument?

I was simply providing two examples of console MMOs that have text chat enabled by default....the fact that they were developed by different people is neither here nor there.

If it's not practical for console gamers to put their controller down and pick up a keyboard, how on earth did text chat get into those games...let alone become the primary method of communication?
Sorry I meant in general not you personally. Like I said their different Developers not all developers design games the same way.If that was the case their would be no diversity in gaming.

Both FF:ARR and DCUO would disprove your comment about practicality of console controllers and keyboards and window management.

They are action based console mmos.... you know... just like eso....

So his argument makes perfect sense. And yours is void as a dead mans bowels.

Thats a horrible example. Absolutely horrible.

We arent discussing similar combat moves in genres. We are discussing communication, something that eso lacks.

    Try again.

Their both shooters on consoles so why don't they have the same knife kills animation. The reason ESO doesn't have it is because the Devs are different and so they decided to not do the same thing as those two MMO. So sir when you can make a real argument please comeback.

Thats a horrible example. Absolutely horrible.

We arent discussing similar combat moves in genres. We are discussing communication, something that eso lacks.

    Try again.
You really making me feel bad for you now man.

It was a example that's it and a example everyone could get would you like me to do a more in-depth reason why developer's don't just do the exact same thing as other Game Devs.I could talk about Gameplay,UI design,Story you ask I'll create and write up a example why saying this game did it you do it as well.

Actually ESO has a way for you to commucate you are choosing not to use it.Just because ESO doesn't have you desire form of communication doesn't mean it lacks a way for you to commucate.

I tried staying out of this topic and lasted more then a few pages but since it surfaced after new info and still silence on the subject I'll break it down and why I am slowly ramping up to wanting to "rage" on these responses from community members and the lack of response from ZOS...

Personally my distaste for the lack of text chat stems from, to paraphrase, "consoles don't get to map their controller because they lack the aptitude for it" where as PC players can map whatever buttons they want because everyone understands DOS and is a programmer right? (Big slap in the face)

Now a lot of the arguments that have been persistent through the ~50 pages of THIS topic (don't forget there was another 60+ page thread that had a lot of ideas thrown out by DIFFERENT people) have been that console has voice and doesn't NEED text, go play PC if you want text, ZOS said they won't, etc.

I, and likely others, get ramped up because the same people that say go play PC for text or don't waste "precious" resources on unnecessary changes we want content! Well sorry I've been playing 3 months vs 1.5 yrs to the PC crowd so I want quality of life fixes since I don't NEED new content yet. Additionally for the PC wanting official support for controllers, "3rd parties already have controller support available but will be available soon" - guess what, want a controller, play on a console... Now see what I did there and the amount of forum rage that would cause if every page is filled with a 1 liner like that?

Ultimately, text chat should have been implemented considering many other games use the EXISTING 3rd party chat with a basic group chat (psn or xbone party chat) and a fully fleshed out text chat. All we are asking for is what is considered a standard avenue to communicate being present in game. The silence on the topic is nothing more then deflection because they skipped text chat to make already delayed deadlines and couldn't find the time then or now to do it and HOPED to pull a fast one on the "incompetent" console crowd but enough of the forum goers have been harping here and there to say fix this...

Tldr: moderate the 1 liner jerks and you'll see less "hate" in these topics and more openness to suggestions on a way to get this in. O and give my "incompetent" sitting on a cough 5 miles away unable to read a screen console playing self text chat because I like options for communication. Thanks

Both FF:ARR and DCUO would disprove your comment about practicality of console controllers and keyboards and window management.

They are action based console mmos.... you know... just like eso....

So his argument makes perfect sense. And yours is void as a dead mans bowels.

Everyone is discussing a feature. That example is a feature just as text chat is a game feature. The feature is a form of communication when in context to text chat boxes but for a visual feature it's still something seen on a screen.

Then discuss a feature that has relevance to the conversation. Combat and communication via text is not the same thing.

    Your argument is invalid.

Complaining about combat mechanics is TOTALLY different from discussing forms of communication.

And I use voice chat... if you actually took the time to read and comprehend peoples posts here you would know that. What everyone has been saying is that having voice chat only, is not suffcient for this type of game.

Which has been proven time and time again. Text chat is needed desperately and will only positively impact this game. These are facts.

They are action based console mmos.... you know... just like eso....

So his argument makes perfect sense. And yours is void as a dead mans bowels.

Thats a horrible example. Absolutely horrible.

We arent discussing similar combat moves in genres. We are discussing communication, something that eso lacks.

    Try again.

A feature is a feature...while the topic is about adding a feature for text chat in context any feature example is suitable for discussion on features in this game.

Their example has relevance because it's a feature that changes what's seen and how a player "enjoys" the game specifically due to a feature. The point they're making is your desire for a text chat box is no different from another players desire for a specific animation.

When you step away and look at the topic for what it is vs what you want it makes perfect sense as an example to this thread.

Thanks

I suspect that the silence from ZoS means they are either trying to figure out a way to add text chat in to the UI or are waiting to see if console usage falls off a cliff and then have to scramble to save it by adding whatever they can. So far, they have only given a thin excuse as to why text chat wasn't added, but have yet to say it will never happen (unless I missed that somewhere).

Both FF:ARR and DCUO would disprove your comment about practicality of console controllers and keyboards and window management.

You are comparing things that are not compareable. Get it right.

Players don't have to use a keyboard to use text chat. Plenty of players in FFXIV, DCUO, and Warframe use text chat without using a keyboard. Also the sum up of all dev comments were "it felt clunky", typing with a controller. However devs compared to gamers will not have the same ability to manipulate a controller. Gamers are going to be much better at it. Also the same developers and focus groups thought taking your finger off the toggle to weapon swap was fine. Most gamers when asked would prefer crouch and weapon swap to be switched around.

There are plenty of logic based comments. You choose to ignore them, IMO because you want a different expeirence on console and PC. However I'll give you an example. If I am in a guild with 45 people other than myself online, and I am looking for a team to run a trial. I'd need 11 other people. However of those 45 online only 5 of them are in guild chat. Now how am I suppose to communicate with the other 40 in a more streamlined way than being able to type in guild text chat "LFG trial group, need 11. I'm X role". Should I message them all individually? Randomly invite them to a group, hoping they are not busy or already grouped? Voice Chat only does not provide an efficient means to tackle this issue, and text chat does.

Ground up is developed from scratch. It's something few developers do often, because it's less time consuming to rework and update old assets, compared to building completely new ones. The console version was localized for developer backed controller support, and the UI recycled from Skyrim to make it familiar. Perhaps one could say the UI and control inputs, if being extremely generous were developed from the ground up rather than reworked. In the end though the console verison in it's entirety were not made from the ground up. It would have firstly taken more than 12+ month to do so.
