It sold over 20 million copies. So it did something right apparently. It really is my favorite TES game.

I think my favorite thing about it, was that it didn't force you into a specific class. You were allowed to build your character the way you wanted. Just that alone, enhanced the role playing aspects of it.

Ah, mass appeal and what many people do no longer holds a candle with me.

What most people do is pretty sickening, a lot of the time.

I always enjoy the argument of: "Other people enjoy it, so I will not."

    Good job.

I think the problem with me for Skyrim was that there weren't any really memorable quests for me other than the DLC. Oblivion may have frustrated me to hell and back, and I may have only managed to make it all the way through the whole thing once but man, I remember it. I remember the Arena fan. I remember Lucien Lachance. I remember sneaking in and spying on that rival mercenary band for the Fighter's Guild. I remember the Mage's Guild quest where the guy you're supposed to get a letter from murdered another guy and you have to learn the spell of underwater breathing or recover the ring off his corpse. I remember being really upset by both Uriel Septim and Martin's deaths. The Dark Brotherhood quest where you're locked in a house and convince everyone to kill each other.

Man, Oblivion was weird and it was rad. The graphics weren't the best, but it never felt like generic fantasy. There was always just a little tweak here and there to keep it feeling unique. Obviously, it was probably a let down after the strangeness that was Morrowind.

I really liked the design elements of Skyrim, the visuals, the dungeons, and the worldbuilding in terms of locations. The writing was pretty stale. I thought they did pull a few clever tricks, such as the racism with the Stormcloaks and their leader's connection to the Thalmor. I just don't love it. I love modding it. It was fun, there just wasn't much to keep me coming back to it and I was hard pressed to finish it. It's probably the first game where I didn't even try to find all the guilds, much less conquer them.

I mean, Morrowind is probably the best. I haven't played it, but everything I hear makes it sound fantastic despite it's age. It's on my "must play list" for when I have the patience. It does sound like it has the most personal of the quest plotlines. :s

And ESO's writing, for me, is among the best in the franchise. Stopping and listening to the dialogue, even the written bits, can be remarkably entertaining. The world is so alive, even though it doesn't move much and I appreciate it. The quests are surprisingly memorable and there's a great deal of humanity to so many of the characters. Some quests, I just find myself stopping and listening to the dialogue again just because.

I don't know about Daggerfall or Redguard.

gonna have to agree.. but if skyrim comes to the xbox one then that would be awesome and i would most definately be playing

Skyrim (360) is on the list of games that will become playable when the Xbox one becomes backward compatible in a few months.

Also if you preorder Fallout 4, you can get a free copy of Fallout 3.

Morrowind was far better, more immersive and had a hell of a lot more lore packed into it! Skyrim WAS good, but I didn't like how it pretty much pointed you where to go all of the time. Morrowind had no map marking system like that.

    @ClearArrow
Morrowind was my first experience into the Elder Scrolls world. Granted for its time it was a decent game, but in my opinion the worst I played of the series.

    Why?

This is just my opinion others will differ on their thoughts. Huge thing that detracted a lot of the fun for me was not having a decent fast travel system. Yes those giant insect walkers traveled. Just felt like a hassle to even use them. Skyrim had a better system in place and Oblivion did as well to a degree. Having a full time job and trying to have a life, I simply do not have time to spend 15 mins walking from one place to another. That is just lazy development by a developer. Put a travel system in place! Players that want to use it can -- those that don't, won't. Pretty simple.

Skyrim also had the Clairvoyance spell that helped direct you when you were lost. It was there if you wanted to use it and not if you didn't. The interface in Skyrim was LEAPS and BOUNDS better and easier to use compared to the other games. The story was lot of fun in Skyrim and was enjoyable to talk to the off Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonations.

Morrowind just felt like a game that wanted to do a lot but had no clear cut direction or way of presenting it. Plus from what I remember some Guild missions would overlap and could not complete all of them due to the other Guild mission conflicting with each other. Think like Thief's Guild needed you to steal a sword which then led to issues if you were part of the Fighter's Guild.

As stated above Morrowind was great for its day. But like playing any other "classic" game it feels incredibly dated and if were not for any form of nostalgia I would put controller down, take game out, and play another.

Its got alot to do with when you did play it, doesn't it?
My own list would be something like this:
    Oblivion
    Skyrim-Morrowind
Daggerfall (cant judge the others, i havent played them)
    Dawnstar (lol)

It's hard to rank ESO, as i HAVE been sinking alot of hours into it, but can't say it has had such an impact on me as Oblivion.
I remember buying that guide for Oblivion and reading it like a bible, then still go around in wonderment exploring every corners of the world, still expecting to find something new. And then i got a PC version and discovered the mods...

For Morrowind and Skyrim, it's a bit harder. Sure, i've played Skyrim alot and Morrowind alot less, but i still can see how rich Morrowind is. Skyrim was great but i had grown up by that time, so the feeling of wonders wasn't there anymoe. I've got to admit, if Skyrim was my first, i'd probably rank it as the best game ever made. Probably.

If your game needs to be heavily modded to be good.

I think that was the good part. You where either a thief, or a good guy fighting for the fighters guild. Many quests ruined the some other quest. Do you steal the Codebook from the Thievesguild and give it to the Fightersguild? Or do you give the Guildmaster of Balmorra the cup so she won't bother the Thievesguild. It is about choices. Only "completionists" want to complete every quest.
In both skyrim and Oblivion you just cannot screw any quest up.

I still play Morrowind though. Vanilla even, except in higher resolution. I tried Skyrim again, but fell asleep. Oblivion was fun though. But for me, Morrowind has the best stories, quests, exploration and fun. Yes, it looks outdated but so does the game Doom. And I still play the original Doom (online) using Zdeamon because I think it is more fun that COD or BF. Also no achievements makes people play for fun instead of just getting the Achievements.

The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

IMO it's really not a fair comparison.

I love Skyrim (am playing it now) and am going to purchase Fallout 3 and New Vegas this weekend in preparation for Fallout 4 coming out (never played Fallouts).

ESO is a great game if you're an MMOer or enjoy PvP. I'm not either of those things, but ESO can let me dip my toe in when I need to and the customization is great.

As with any TES game, there are flaws to both of them (as there were with Oblivion), but that doesn't mean any of them are better than the others.

Me: I prefer Bethesda's approach more than Zen's, but, so many people enjoy ESO, I can't fault them for giving it their best shot. Sure it may not have been a bullseye, but, who knows what the future holds.

"flaws to 'both' of them"?? There are 17 of them if you include the expansions and spinoffs. Here is the list:

    Skyrim was too easy.

It was super pretty, the story was okay, and the gameplay was really fun, but it was too damn easy, and the character progression didn't require any thought.

    I preferred Oblivion and Morrowind.

    1. Skyrim
    2. Morrowind
    3. Oblivion

I can't list ESO in a solo TES games list so I'll do it with MMOs I played:
    1. ESO
    2. FFXI
    3. FFXIV
    4. AION

Those are the games I liked the most in order. ^^
