Morrowind was the best elder scrolls game ever

I can't find the video right now, but there is a video of a developer showing off Morrowind and he talks about how every item in the game was placed by hand. When Oblivion came out they released a video where the developer brags about how the forest is computer generated. Sadly every video game from now on will become more and more computer generated. Not just the trees and grass but the dungeon layouts and anything else they can let the computer do. Sadly its one aspect that continues to get worse since Morrowind.

Many new Elder Scrolls fans do not realize how much Morrowind is to credit for how immersive the series is. Morrowind really fleshed out the lore for the game, it made the Khajiit and Argonians into actual beast races instead of humans like they used to be. The mushrooms and other items being harvestable in such a realistic fashion. Pretty much all of the unique architecture for the series was designed by the Morrowind team.

There are also lots of little things that made Morrowind special, like the levitation spell; which the newer games have been too lazy to incorporate.

It's not a trend. if anything, Morrowind was the exception from the rule.
That statement about hand placed stuff in Morrowind was so important because its predecessor Daggerfall was 99% randomly computer generated.

I like all of the Elder Scrolls games... Morrowind was definitely the most fantastic world... Vivec... the floating skyscraping city... it was the size of half of Skirim by itself... Imagine if Morrowind was recreated... but with all of todays technology...

    Oblivion was vast and awesome...

and Skyrim was nothing short of brilliant too... I contemplated blowing off work on many days to keep playing...

This new one... ESO online... is a mixed bag for me... I could care less about the MMO part at this point... The only things I don't like about this new one are:

    1. lack of customization with armor and weapons
    2. Many of the caves and dungeons are mirror copies of each other...
    and...
    3. I'm not as motivated to relentlessly explore... there just aren't enough bizarre and fun characters to dialogue with... treasure chest have many sucky prizes...

I guess they had to make sacrifices to accommodate Cyrodil and MMO.

with that said, I am enjoying the game

Looks like I'm not the only one. Even though Morrowind was a great gaming experience, I hated the very first 3D-modelled games as well. While 2D-sprited/bitmaps were a bit old-fashioned at the time and had their own limitations, they were still on advantage when compared to 3D. A highly temporary one. And then, it took as much as 3-4 years to get our hands on TES IV: Oblivion, and I remember its graphics was often considered as revolutionary. That was the first title I assumed 3D graphics started not only to look decent, but actually good.

Never compare single RPGs with MMOs. Two different worlds without any intersection.

Both games are great in their own way.

Loving Morrowind as much as I do,I am so glad to see that others here love it as well. The dungeons were often different, with good loot being dropped.AND,..if you killed someone, you could take their clothing, armor, and weapons. In ESO you get junk a lot of the time, but certainly NOT what they are wearing. There was really cool armor, etc. Also in the construction kit you could change the stats of everything, you could add the things that werent already ingame. And you could add a mod,if it didnt show inworld, you could go into that kit and place the bits you wanted into wherever you wanted to.Like on Caius Cosades's bed.I used to place weapons and everything in his house,go ingame and run to get it.
What I miss are the sounds of Morrowind.Cliff Racers as they saw you, scribs, the sound of those Silt Striders lowing as you travel along in places.

Morowind is the best... For me it's mainly because of the sheer amount of game content in this game...

Weapons: Spear, Crossbow, Throwing Stars, Throwing Knives, Darts, Katana, Dai-Katana, Wakizashi, Tanto, Staff (as a blunt Weapon), Clubs... And as a bonus: DAEDRIC CRESCENT :-D
Spells: Levitate, Mark/Return, Divine/Amlsivi Intervention, Sound, Lock, Jump, Slowfall, Swift Swim
Enchant anything with anything... I once enchanted an Exquisite Robe with a "poisonball" spell and just spammed it at anything that moved, so much fun...:-D

The number of caves, daedric and dwemer ruins and other locations, many of which didn't even have any quests asociated with them! Another story: I was just running around Ashlands and there was this entrance to a Daedric something I never noticed before... I went in and it turned out to be some kind of burial chamber or something like that, lots of money and gems and stuff like that... I pocketed it all, of course and was ready to leave and then I looked up and there was this awesome looking original white shield... I was so happy...:-)

So many quest lines that took forever to complete!! And not really lines, you could choose which quests you wanted to complete, of course I did them all, but you didn't have to, because there were so many, or because you just didn't like the NPC that gave them... Not that Skyrim bs with 5 quests per line...

Then came Oblivion and don't get me wrong, I loved it, but they cut out half of the stuff that was in Morrowind... And then came Skyrim and another cuts came with it... Sure, they added some other stuff and again I loved Skyrim...
But Morrowind will always be Morrowind...:-)

    Yup I LOVED that!!

Some guy would be walking around with a cool chest peice, or cool weapon, and i'd follow him and murder him to find out what it was lol.

It was awesome that anything you saw someone wearing would be in their loot table when you killed them. So sweet!!

Haha i remember that too. The long ramps in vivec city were awesome for that!

Another thing I remember: That random island on the east part of the map with that floating house/castle thing pretty high in the sky. I remember flying up their for the first time, meeting some 1000 year old wizard, murdering him, and taking it over as my homebase. Felt like a boss haha

I had permanent levitation and speed boost (you could make some really cool builds with those 'constant' enchant effects, and 17 armor slots to work with for diff enchants).

All the TES single player games has given me something special if we look at game experience. All of them brought something new to the table and all of them was, for their time, excellent games. My alltime favorite tho, must be ....shared first place between Skyrim and Morrowind...followed very closely by Oblivion.

Yup it was sweet, and near the end of that playthrough I had created a spell that let me do the same exact thing. Jumping from city to city in like 3 jumps was pretty badass lol. Just don't botch the landing or you're F'd.

He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

I got so used to jumping everywhere in Morrowind and Oblivion to level up that skill, acrobatics was it not?, that i still do it. Other than pvp i hate riding my horse and prefer to jump or run everywhere in Tamriel. Morrowind was my 1st es game so it will always be my favorite. Morrowind and kotor were the reasons i got an xbox in the first place.
Jump everywhere if you love Morrowind!!

Or maybe it was just my imagination.

I play ESO as Morrowind: pinkiller + true exploration addon.

It would also be nice if there was a mod, or that the NPCs in general gave better/more specific directions and context. Heck, a journal would be nice too, like in Morrowind. Of course, you can always write things down yourself. It's just that without quest markers, the lack of context would make finding some things a hassle, assuming that there is any such quest in which the location of the objectives aren't already obvious.
