Morrowind was the best elder scrolls game ever

And i mean the first xbox disc version where you could do that 'left/right trigger glitch' and basically create tons of crazy builds (given that you completed that long ass quest that let u add +skills to enchant).

If anyone knows what i'm talking about, that was an awesome awesome game.

This game is 2nd best (honestly wasn't a fan of Skyrim or Oblivion).

Enough said.

Morrowind was fantastic. Though, you know, not for that specific reason. But, still.

I did love Morrowind but when I tried playing it again recently the graphics were painful. I so want Skywind to finish so I can experience the fun of getting dive bombed by cliff racers in Vvardenfel in glorious early 2010's quality graphics! And if ESO ever opens up that zone they damn well better have cliff racers.

Lol i remember accidentally getting my Destruction skill up to like 30k, and after that everytime i would use a destru skill it would crash the game.

I had to load another save and be more careful.

Even in 2002 I found the graphics painful. Uncanny valley all over the place... I could never bring myself to play it because of how awful the graphics were. Those were the days when true 3D character models were far, far worse and far, far less realistic to the eyes than 2D character sprites, because the technology just wasn't there to make them look anything other than terrible.

Edit: clearly I'm way too tired because I didn't mean to say 2010 up above - I meant to say 2002, and have corrected it.

Yeah idk.. it felt more rewarding to glitch on xbox than just enter a cheatcode.

In order to get the glitch to work properly.. u actually had to complete a long ass quest to be able to do it.

It was that morag tong quest where u had to collect like 60 items from all over the map. I feel like i earned that glitch lol.

    It was a fun

    Yes Morrowind was/is the best.

I can handle the so-called crappy graphics (which were cutting edge at the time) by comparing them in my head to pac man. Always works.

I loved that you could go back to various NPCs and ask them about all the topics they knew - conversations in ESO seem to shut off to a single line of text which I find depressing. I also loved that sometimes getting involved in one faction cost you with respect to others (and sometimes merchant prices and so on).

It aggravates me to no end how horribly the various morrowind critters were translated into ESO

Cliff Racers should NOT be "feathered"

Netches should be MUCH much MUCH bigger - and it's the Bettys not the Bulls who are aggressive.

Scribs should be cuter. And where is the weird echo-ey thumping thing they used to do??

Nix Hounds should be bigger, and darker, and cooler. And they should do that "Hoon" call / thing.

Mud crabs should be much bigger and LOOK like piles of mud (heck that's why they were called mud crabs for gosh sakes).

ESO could learn a lot of cool-ness from Morrowind
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Yup man agree with all of this.

I also loved how there were no quest markers to show you where to go. You actually had to read your journal and follow vague clues. The days before games held your hand in every way were awesome.

EQ1 also was great for this reason.

I confess, I've played Morrowind so much over the years that I fried two sets of disks....

Just ordered the GOTY edition from Steam a few weeks ago.

I miss the Morag Tong. Dark brotherhood is cool and all but the fact that you could slaughter somebody and then just show the guard a special paper and they just walk away. That was allways so gangster IMO.

Never played morrow but I've played both oblivion and skyrim and I must say my favorite quest ever/dlc pack was the divine crusader story I really loved that story and the armor would love to be able to have that style in this game

Daggerfall never gets its proper dues..... :p

I don't know. I was born too late and was never able to get into Morrowind proper. Maybe it's because before playing the game I heard nothing but ravings about how fantastic the game was, and ended up a little underwhelmed. I can concede that it's better story/lore/world-wise than Oblivion and Skyrim, I just had an easier time playing the latter two.

I liked the divine crusader stuff, it was nice not to have all the usual moral ambiguity getting me down for a change. That's if you assume the nine divines are a force for good, of course

The thing that sucks is you couldn't make a game like that today. I know a lot of elder scrolls fans are likely to say they would love morrowind with modern graphics and stuff but the difference is that at the time it was made it was actually aimed at mass market appeal, but the mass market it was aimed at is no more.
i was watching this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPqwDGXxLhU - last night and what it brought home to me was that today, game developers and players alike think that what were deliberate game design decisions in old games were just missing features due to primitive technology. for morrowind, the main examples of that would be using text instead of voice acting, and not having any map markers. If you dig around in the morrowind data files you'll find that they recorded greetings and stuff for Vivec but then didn't use it, instead having him communicate only through text.
Ken Rolston said in this interview - http://m.hardocp.com/article/2006/05/23/oblivions_ken_rolston_speaks/#.VeAMDcR4WK0 - that he acquiesced to having full voice acting because it's what the kids want while knowing the game's power to tell a story was diminished by it, not enhanced

Morrowind for the time was a totally unique experience. It was phenomenal and revolutionary on so many fronts. Too bad what has come after, Oblivion and Skyrim, only surpassed Morrowind by MODDING THE CRAP OUT OF THEM.

Stopped reading after "X-Box"...I still love Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, but not just because those were great games with outstanding immersion, my true reason was...you were able to mod them (Morrowind not so much, but that game was so revolutionary there wasn't any modding needed to make it awesome, but at least Oblivion and Skyrim and to do that properly you needed a PC).

Not only that modding those games shaped them into other games, I learnt so much about file structures and how such a game and its textures and meshes work together, I would truly miss that knowledge and that experience.

Besides that...my modded Skyrim still looks like a game from another star beating almost 99% of all DX11 games out there graficalwise (with the exception of Witcher 3 maybe).

Morrowind was the only game where I read an in game book and it described ruins sunken under the sea, lost to the ages.

No marker, no quest arrow pointing "hey go here."

Out of curiosity I went to the west coast of the island, lo and behold out in the sea were ruins as described in the book. Swam around and found treasure chest with sweet, sweet underwater loot.

Man that was so awesome at the time.

Most games hold your hand now and have a giant circle on the map with an arrow pointing at the chest "look here." It kills that sense on wonder and replaces it with "hit x to skip conversations, run to quest location, finish ASAP, trade game in for 5 dollars at Gamestop."
"When people !@# with you you !@# with them ten times worse. Next thing you know, you're in a motel room with 24 beers and a half bucket of chicken. You see, that's how you get things done." Ricky, Trailer Park Boys.
