Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

Wow over a hundred voted no. Really people.

Ya to hell with the people who are disabled and cant use the current system huh?

Ive served and have major hearing loss due to multiple IED attacks. So the voice chat really doesnt work for me and others with similar disabilities.

    Thanks for your service.

Playing on console s may be tough if you require text.

Text is simply not as popular with the console crowd as it is with the keyboard cowboys of the PC..

I would like to see you stay here on console, but through the favoring of a keyboard as an input device on PC, more games accommodate.

On console, mics and controllers are the mass market, and companies lose revenue when trying to implement a peripheral for a niche audience.

I really don't know why console game developers don't bother more with niche peripheral programing.

I mean everything was better with kinect, right? What all those smash hits the PlayStation move had?

Then their was that much game that came with a 200 *** controller, everyone bought that thing, huh?

I know many people play on PC so much they cant think of a keyboard in the same bargain bin as a kinect, but if a console product doesn't hit the mass market, I wouldn't hold out hope for kinect support.

    Cheers.

Sorry buddy, gonna have to disagree. it's not that tough to plug in a usb keyboard. I played ffxiv for over a year

It's much easier to just talk to others on console.
Trying to add in another window and also require another peripherial isn't a logical approach when nothing is wrong with what exists.

No it's not. I've been gaming on Pc and console for 20 years now. Have you even played ESO? It doesn't seem like it. Have you ever been in a populated area and tried to communicate? Have you ever been in a full 500 man guild with 20 people all carrying on separate conversations? Text chat is far superior hands down. The only time voice chat is necessary is in a group dungeon. By the way, isn't a mic a peripheral?

A peripheral is something not boxed in.

Something requiring an extra or discretionary purchase.

So no. All consoles shipped with mics, not keyboards.

Lol, Microsoft tried to force an extra peripheral down the mass markets throat in the form of the kinect and Microsoft paid the price.

A keyboard would not be extra if you were playing on a PC.
"A peripheral is a "device that is used to put information into or get information out of the computer.".

Controllers, keyboards, mice and mice are all peripherals. The fact that some are pre-packaged is irrelevant.

And you paid a sub because, you were a tiny slice of the overall gaming market. You paid more because the mass market didn't what your taste.

What??? What are you even talking about?

I paid more for what? A keyboard? Lol

You do realize that a gaming mic costs MORE than a keyboard right?

Plug in a usb keyboard. Type to chat. End this unnecessary problem.

Sorry, auto correct really ended that strangely. I corrected the original.

You paid more in the form of a subscription.

Niche gaming style = less people to charge = the company has to charge the niche group more for the same service.

Text chat inches this game closer to that unsalable niche game style that destiny tried so hard to distance itself from.

You do know that eso was a sub to play when it first came out right? They started losing players so they had to go buy to play, and maybe for other reasons as well. I think you have your facts wrong there. Company's go free to play when they really start losing people, they don't charge people. I wish this game was still sub to play. Text chat would help improve the games communication and would bring in more people. Yes to text chat.

So when ESO launched on PC with text, it was sub based and then failed and had to broaden its appeal, huh?

So the trappings of text chat have been proven to be a market too small to sustain the company.

This is exactly what i have been saying.

    Thanks for agreeing.
Instead of going free to play to chase the mass market appeal, ESO has been repackaged to suit the console market they are chasing.

Text chat is a step back .
    Finally we agree on something.

Voice chat is lovely but anyone who's been through Riften on Xbox knows that it's overwhelming with twenty to thirty people crammed in one place shouting over each other. Adding text chat alongside the voice chat would make recruiting for groups, guilds, and trading far easier. Look at how Warframe's text chat works. It's a lovely and simple format. You can introduce that on console and so much of the communication on the game will be so much easier.

Voice chat only in an mmo is inefficient at best. It's the perfect thing for small groups but when it comes to area chat it's utter chaos. I really have no problem using voice chat other than the headset getting uncomfortable after an hour or two but anyone with hearing problems or people not wanting to deal with the grief of being a woman, homosexual, or anything else that may bring ridicule from other players have no other options than either not speaking at all or as a couple of ignorant people suggested grow thicker skin.

I say I have no problem using voice chat but I have thick skin and could care less what some unknown person says to or about me. I also don't mind having to yell at people to get my point across. Though I shouldn't have to do it in a video game when I'm trying to relax and have fun.

I honestly don't understand the people saying no to text chat either. Yea ok, no way will it be implemented with IC but to say they would never want that feature in the future is absolutely nuts. The only reason I can possibly think of not to have text chat is gold spammers and if I'm not mistaken ZOS has pretty much got a handle on them in the pc version.

One more thing, voice only in an mmo is a niche market. Not the other way around. The things that drove players away from this game in the first year had nothing to do with text chat and everything to do with bugs, poor gameplay and a multitude of other problems. Of all the other reviews I read, text chat was never mentioned as a problem on PC. It is being however being discussed as a problem by reviewers of the console version.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

Totally agree! I don't use my mic; for reasons like you stated, but mainly personal preference. It's near impossible to sell items, when not in a guild with a guild store, or invite/join anyone.

Even if you use your mic you have to fight your way through the hoard of voices to get heard. Add a text feature, maybe a pop-up window you can enable. Especially while in town.

659 Votes: -545 Votes in favor of text chat (82%) -114 Votes against text chat (17%)

This is the most voted on Poll I have seen on the forms and ZOS should be taking these numbers seriously.

The fact that zos is taking so long to even say anything about this issue has me worried. If they are so slow in adding such a needed and basic feature such as text chat, it leads me to think that there are going to be many more horribke decisions made in future patches.

I have very little faith in this game right now, I cancled my sub yesterday and redownloaded dcuo, I am going to play a mmo where I can actually communicate and group up with people in.

You almost had me zos, i might give eso another go if you ever decide to add some of the much needed features in this game.

After the last eso live, i'm done. They didn't even talk about text chat or even recognize the problem. I'm taking my money away from these ungrateful fools. The only way they will implement text chat now is if there is a mass exodus and their profits drop. It's time for the game to start dying now.

You can use guild voice chat tho so 100ppl is a lot and isn't bound by distance or factions and that offers what you describe. It's just different for ppl use to a PC way of gaming on a MMO.

No it isnt. Ive played the Xbox version. You can not use guild voice chat as a zone chat. It is limited to guild members only, and only a couple of members at that, since as nobody uses it anyway. Now THAT seems to be a complete waste, as if I wanted to get hold of a certain guild member I could message him. No voice chat is even needed for that.

You're desiring more...that's fine but what exists isn't a problem or issue.

Again, the problem isnt with what exists, but with what doesnt. I dont desire more, but only to be able to do the same things PC version can. Right now, there is no way to buy/sell/chat with zone. No way to request help at a dolmen or world boss. LFG is almost a total fail and more than a few have given up on it. There is a lack of ability to monitor more than one guild chat, while group chatting, waiting for a reponse on private chat, and watching zone at the same time.
Were not talking about a pretty mount or sparkly costume that one platform has and the other doesnt, I believe these issues I speak of are important parts of the game and directly affect how it is played and played out. And these things werent just replaced with something else, but removed completely, leaving console people with a sort of cut up 'eso-lite' version of the game.
I just have to wonder, if this to you is 'desiring more', than why arent you and others desiring more as well? Why settle for less, unless you really do buy into that PC master race stuff? Bad enough they get much faster loading and far better graphics, they also should get a full better version of the game for the same price as well? lol

    First
Go read the discussion...yes it's a lot but you're throwing assumptions on me that have been shared multiple times in this thread already. I own both PC on a gaming PC and Xbox One versions and been on since 2013 PC closed beta. I and others developed and compiled an ongoing thread of updated console info for months prior and up to release here AND on the Xbox forums. Someone else did the same for ps4.

Last...you brought a game with hopes and assumptions that you'd have the same or similar experiences as the PC platform.
As a result you now want as well as others for ZOS to make changes due to your oversights.
All the other claims of what can't be done or what issues exist are based soley on your opinions and your lack of research prior to your purchase.

I'm sure you'll figure this all out sooner or later but you've placed yourself as well as others into a less than ideal situation for you based on what you desire. Don't attempt to place your feelings on others as its only at best 300-400 ppl out of a few million who have also made a misinformed decision who also share your opinions.

Haha I'm not going on that end but I've definitely spent enough for about 10 ppl who have said they are leaving.

    Again I'm all in!
Not to keep someone from enjoying a game but to allow me to enjoy the game because I swapped platforms for a better fit for me.

Is that a one hyperbolic statement per forum goer, or each hyperbolic statement?

I'm pretty sure I could arrange for you to be adding a significant number of new subscriptions....

    One per forum goer.

Those for text chat based on context here seem to have placed a very high value on frequent meaningless interactions.
The console use and design of no zone and voice chat in focused channels forces a gamer to change their focus to place very high values on establishing meaning relationships.

Because of how gaming happens on PC today (which may change with PC and Win10) it's very hard to create and establish connections or relationships from game to game as you're always starting over.

On consoles the reality of meeting someone and later seeing them again by gamertag throughout the network and from year to year and generation to generation, relationships are meaningful and therefore have a stronger value which those relationships moved into the game.

It's why I keep commenting on the absence of text chat being a great thing on console and why I value that form not coming as it deteriorates what's good on console today (especially on Xbox one).

Lots of arguments are being made for and against the feature at hand but it comes down to a few things.
    -informed buyer decisions
    -communication methods
    -knowing your console
-value placed on relationships vs interactions

The fact that zos is taking so long to even say anything about this issue has me worried. If they are so slow in adding such a needed and basic feature such as text chat, it leads me to think that there are going to be many more horribke decisions made in future patches.

I have very little faith in this game right now, I cancled my sub yesterday and redownloaded dcuo, I am going to play a mmo where I can actually communicate and group up with people in.

You almost had me zos, i might give eso another go if you ever decide to add some of the much needed features in this game.

    Please enjoy your time there.

Since you have given up, I guess I'd like to be the first to say we will miss you around here, but we understand.

    Best of luck.

This is sincere, even if it sounds sarcastic, use your recreational time in the way that best suits you and the rest of us will do the same.

After the last eso live, i'm done. They didn't even talk about text chat or even recognize the problem. I'm taking my money away from these ungrateful fools. The only way they will implement text chat now is if there is a mass exodus and their profits drop. It's time for the game to start dying now.

20 people out of 1 million is not a mass exodus.

There are more people asking for stable PvP servers and new content than for text chat.

Most of the people voting don't even play on console. So they can't leave the console in a storm out.

This game will have a rise and plummet in membership based on the content drops not dlc.

If they drop the ic , people will hop back in.

If they drop orsinnium, people will hop back in.

GTA online nurses its community in exactly this way.

Have faith the game is fun, the community is nice and we need fresh content and stable PvP first.

    Horses for courses really.

I prefer text chat over voice, and dislike PvP. You like PvP and (as far as I can tell) prefer voice other text chat.

As for the new PvE....I'm so far away from vet levels I'm not in any need of new content yet, and I have a history of retiring characters before getting them to end-game levels.

Unless you have access to the actual player numbers, and you're running exit interviews....I seriously doubt you can back the 20 out of a million figure.

Interestingly, DCUO had a PvP focused DLC...and it's largely considered the worst DLC released. That's not to say that ESO's version will be the same....who knows, maybe it'll be a raging success and be used as a template for all ESO DLC going forward.

But as long as it contains text chat for the console, I'll be happy

I love the minimal ui , I love how it looks like a sleeker sharper version of ESO. I watch PC live stream footage and its a nightmare of numbers and gawdy text boxes.

    Great post.

Text chat will likely come in the form of an app or not at all from the sounds of it.

you don't need to use those you know. those numbers are 100% optional. you actually have to go out of your way to get them. there are even add-ons to make it even more minimalistic.

I dont think basing opinion on streams is the best way to judge a ui. but whatever.

The UI is going to be updated to feature more information. It was covered a few ESO lives ago. Specifically damage numbers and effect trackers were mentioned.

And if they can give the option for people to clutter their screens with damage numbers, why not an option for text chat too? Options are wonderful things.
