Pickpocketing, picking locks, and selling/laundering stolen goods.

Selling/laundering stolen goods is fairly profitable, however there is a limit to how many transactions you can do with a Thieves Guild Fence per day.

    Legerdemain...

The best way to do it is stealing stuff and fencing/laundering. Just keep at it everyday and hit the max you're allowed to fence/launder.

I have found pocket picking to be very good. (especially in dock areas). you can often find 4-10 people to steal from. Some towns have no dock guards, though NPCs may be in line of sight of each other, so you may have to wait for people to move around a bit. it can be tricky until you put a few skill points into making pocket picking easier. Especially for HARD rated people. Leveling is a volume game, harder targets just seem to have more expensive items... not more XP per pick. So try to find a place with a lot of people to pick.

Lockpicking locked house doors is also pretty good (lots of towns have houses you can lockpick, even if you don't steal anything inside (90%of the times when I house break there are 3 people staring at me when I get in the house...) 99% od the time there is a guard that comes by, so keep an eye out.

(Then sell the items) for a small boost per item (cost of item doesn't seem to matter). Raise the cap when you can.

Picking locks on chest out in the world is good too, but more random, and you can't control it. Sometimes I hang out on the beaches or in the back end of zones to harvest crafting mats. My record is 8 chests in a row (that you can see from the last chest to be picked). 3-4 is not uncommon, because people open all the easy spots near roads, then all the chests spawn out in the middle of noplace, just for me! B)

i"m at 16 and a half right now on my console character, and I don't work too hard at it.

While it is nice to just steal expensive things and sell them, it is not the fastest way to level the skill. Anything that is stolen that you Launder or Fence counts as one point towards the skill. Your limited to a certain amount of Fencing and a certain amount of Laundering. So, I think the base is 50 items, that is 50 each or 100 over all. Passives can increase this to 110 Launder and 110 Fence, or 220 items a day. So, you want to unlock the passive that allows you to fence more each day. I don't know if the subsequent levels of this passive are worth it, but the first point you put in certainly is.

So, what I do is steal provisioning ingredients and anything else I can. Then I Launder the Provisioning Ingredients (and recipes or motifs I want to trade) and then Sell the rest. Provisioning Ingredients are nice to steal as they stack and you can carry a bunch of them, where most other things you steal take up a slot for each one. Yes, some identical loot items stack, but your looking for points here, not gold. Ships and docks and warehouses are good for gathering stolen items.

In any event, with each character I level in this, I make sure that their max is reached, or close to it, in Laundering and Fencing each day.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I unintentionally power leveled legerdemain on several characters. I say "unintentionally" because what I was really after was guts for fishing.

I haven't gone back to check if they've patched it, but it used to be that the sheep on Khenarthii's Roost respawned super fast, so if you ran around killing them (and they are considered owned livestock, so killing them is a crime - I kept my bounty to a minimum by killing the shepherds whenever they spawned rather than let them witness me slaughtering their flocks), you could end up with stacks of meat and guts in a really short time.

I went on a rampage, and spent the next week or so logging in to each of the characters I did this on to launder my daily limit of guts each day, and sell my daily limit of meat each day.

Really, I was only in it for the guts, but in a very short time (as far as effort anyway - it still took about a week of real time to do) I leveled multiple characters from legerdemain 1 or 2 all the way to 14 or 15.
