I am always doing as said - open container, close it and if it was something useful, go sneak and steal. I NEVER had anything disappeared. I am doing it a lot before and after 1.6 and never saw what OP described. I saw this sometimes with raw mats like ironweed, but never in the city with containers.

No, it's actually not. If it were a chest, or an alchemy node, or some other resource that is shared, then it would be the correct answer. Container contents, however, are player-specific (just like loot drops from mobs). I suspect there's something in the code that causes a container that's been opened to become empty shortly after it was closed, regardless of whether the contents were looted.

Quest and companion NPCs do not detect or report you for stealing. The ONLY npc's you should look out for are the ones you can pickpocket or kill and guards too obviously.
Important quest npc's will never report you, you can steal right in front of them, because they are exempt from justice system, so steal away, just make sure ordinary ones are not in a mix. Easiest way to tell is, they will have a level next to their name.

If a NPC sees you grab something important just let them kill without guards and you keep the item. This is how I got a purp motiff.

This isn't limited to rare motifs. This happens all the time with owned containers. If I check, but for whatever reason don't grab the contents, and later change my mind and go back even after a short while, sometimes the container will then display as empty.

Yup, most containers are instanced to the player. This is why you can run around in a packed building, with everyone looting everything in site, and still have stuff to steal yourself.

However, like I said on the first page, these containers respawn on a timer. So if you get unlucky, you can catch something right on the edge of this timer, close it, and it respawns, the items it contained will just *poof* disappear.

Im not motif farming, Im trying to get my legerdemain up. And it was a big deal to me because it was the very first purple motif I have ever found. But thanks for being so understanding lol

why in the world don't you have autoloot for stolen items turned on?
Why go to the trouble and risk of stealing something, only NOT to loot it?

I have turned it on, steal steal steal, then when I'm back at the refuge, I see what new things I have collected.

I'm sure the random number generator just said, "oh - item not looted. ok reset for next person that opens the drawer".
nothing sinister. just rng and not looting the thing to start with.

chalk it up to a life lesson and autoloot everything

You can just read the motif before the guards catch you to learn the skill. Easily worth the small gold bounty for an extremely rare motif.

Probably the same reason I don't have it turned on. Because sometimes it's handy to be able to look in the container first without the risk of getting a bounty before you decide whether to steal the contents.

Not true actually. There is a feature that removes items from containers after you have been revealed by a local npc.

This happens to me all the time, well, not with a motif... But any item green or better. I chalked it up to being on a timer.. If you look in the drawer and take too long to get back to it.. It goes empty. I have learned to be quick at reopening it and since have not had this problem.

I think that some of the purple motifs require 9/9 passive from the craft before they allow you to use it so it just sits in your inventory til then.

I dont want the Primal for my collection, I wanted to sell it for the gold. 30k is a lot of money for me, especially since I donate a lot of money to others to make sure they can get their horses.

30k for primal purple motif.... Lol... Theyre like 400g on PS4

If you EVER find a rare motif, pick it up regardless of the sitaution (as long guards are not right around you), and just log out and wait for the bounty to go away.

Yes i have had this happen with many items, seems like if you open anything else, move to far, or take more than a few second whatever is there will disappear.

This is exactly what is happening. If you keep standing next to the desk, nightstand, etc, the item will not despawn. The moment you take a few steps away it is gone

This feature is probably caked in to save on memory. Imagine if you run through the house opening a bunch of containers then leave. The game has to remember what the inventory was in all those containers. Makes sense that you have a couple second window after you close it before it resets.

IF you can run while your inventory menu is up, you can also learn the motif before the guard nabs you. This assumes you want the thief to learn the motif or recipe.

the problem with this theory, I play as a duo with my husband & we never see the same things inside containers...

& I like to case the joint to see what's worth taking, but if I decide NOT to steal something it almost always disappears

I seen this before, the container must have reset a second before you attempted the second grab. Unlike the solo ES games this can happen even if you are just about to activate them. happens a lot to me I am so sorry for your loss.
