Here's an official response on the matter from Twitch :

ZOS_Jessica_Folsom: For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic.

I do have something new to share with you Zenimad,I'm selling the game.
Next time you develop a MMORPG try to actually care about your customers.
Had a good run, good luck guys.

    REALLY?

The product you were promised arrived exactly as demonstrated in the beta and because the developers didn't drop everything to accommodate a niche demand, you are going to burn your disc?

That seems like a mature and rational decision.

    Best of luck.

Well, if that's the decision he's come to, then it's his to make. I won't stop him, more loot for me.

I'm not really sure what's going on with this topic anymore. Did they really confirm that text chat wasn't coming any time soon?

No, they just said that they have nothing new to say about it at this time, so it's not a no nor a yes.

Well, they have said no, in the past... and since they having nothing new to say...

I'm thinking it's one of those ways of saying no without actually saying no. They're toying with your emotions. Those clever villains.

We never had a straight "No we won't ever add text chat to the console version, ever." :P Instead we had:

"Is it possible we could have a text chat? Yes. Will we? I don’t think we can safely say one way or another. It probably is safe to say if we add a more text centric way to chat it won’t be a straight chat window." from Paul Sage 2 months ago, before he left ZOS. You can read his whole reply on Reddit.

And then on twitch chat during ESO live today:

"ZOS_Jessica_Folsom: For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic."

Understand it the way you want, though.

They point blank said no to the text chat box.
They said maybe to radial chat ideas...let's build on that

Bah with Paul Sage gone they might change their mind but, I'm looking forward for another way to text chat in game without a chat box, it could be cool to have something out of the standard MMOs out there.

I don't agree with some things you said as you don't agree with some things I said too, I assume. xD But I kinda like the idea of a text chat in the social menu. :)

They should definitly improve that system, in my opinion. It is not like a text chat box, but it kinda works like proximity voice chat as we can only see the bubbles if we're close to the player using one.

Take this however you want but what I've shared has been in efforts to help.
Having been apart of this community for approx 2 years I've learned a lot and try to share those experiences with others.

I realize ppl don't want to agree or compromise or listen and or want to be heard, argue etc but having been around for a long time there are trends.

This company talks about what they want to work on and even comments on things they like. They address things that won't happen and often never restate that.

It's how things are done...for whatever it's worth to you I won't be going anywhere anytime soon as I'm a longtime supporter of this game and the company who developed it.

I've been following much of the DeVs since 1999-ish so I'm not going anywhere cause I like what they produce.

    ...

And there you o with the insults...
By the way I'm pretty sure I'm older or at least as old as you but that's of no concern to you.

This format right here and how the interactions occur are definitely deterring the idea to add text chat.

I keep trying to avoid the arguments, name calling and off topic comments.
I continue to offer ideas and compromises but here we are ...

If you're actually older than me which makes you well into your 40's and this is how you communicate think about it.

Most gamers are younger and more immature than both of us.

If we can't communicate in the forms without issues why on earth would they bring this issue over to an in-game experience.

Think about it...seriously...as again they ArE reading the forums

You tell people what they should or shouldn't talk about. Think about that. You are anything but helpful.

And you are the one who tried the "I've been here X long *** , and you've been following them since 99" etc , but when thrown back in your face then it's an insult.

You think you are coming off any better than anyone else ? That's the most amusing part.

Ok I'm sharing with you based on past events that you were not apart of my suggestions because I see the road you're going down and learned where it ended.
Doing the same actions will result in the same outcome.

I'm suggesting to try something different. No idea why you feel that should come with insults or attacks.

He comes at you with insults because he knows he has no logical arguments against your statements.

I wonder if people realize that individual, customizable chat bubbles/floating text would be a greater strain on the system than standard text chat. It would also be much more cluttered. Imagine multiple people all typing at once and it filling the whole screen with text.

Annoying yes, but better than no text chat at all in my opinion still. Added bonus if we can customize the size of the text and bubbles.

True something is better than nothing. I can't see free reign, type it, it appears overhead happening though. That would be really hard on the game. Likely it would be a select size of phases a player could type and save to display overhead. Similar to the existing system.

How does a customized radial chat option cause an issue that the radial doesn't?

It would require more processing if it was not a type, save, than display function, but rather a type, then display one. As it would be more user input that is going to multiple locations, rather than a centralized one.

So radial text chat = creating a customized emote to display.
It's not free form like text chat box.

It's basically a few customized emotes vs pre set text. The text would have to fit within a few characters so let's say 30 or less. It's saved in the emotes.

I don't follow how this changes anything. It's saving text. Maybe 32kb

If a player could type a message then have displayed over their character's head and they could do that over and over again. That method would require more processing than a standard text chat box. Typing the message, having it saved to an empty emote message slot would require less.

Just commenting on "let us in on your secret"

-When I play I often throw up a text emote followed with prix voice chat while grinding, and questing.
Also I do the console thingy - jump around silly to let ppl know I want their attn

Oh yes, I (along with others) am rather familiar with the 'You! Hey You! Looky here!!' dance..But the problem with that is,
    1) It only works if someone is around to see it and
    2) Once you have someones attention- then what to do?
Trying to mime out your request is a bit more difficult than getting their attention.

    Always begin with hello!

Again, works only if someone can see it. Then maybe they hello back. End of conversation..Well, we know our hello chat bubble works anyway..

Voice chat as well. hi , do you mind if I quest with you or would you like to party up to kill XYZ for a bit.

Cant voice chat. Too many problems. First of which, not a good idea if you are female. Especially if you are female who half the time is playing a male character, though I suppose males playing females have similar issues.
Also, though I can type very quickly, when using voice I have to speak very slowly so I can be understood. Many dont have the patience to deal with that, and this combined with other 2 make voice chat a bad idea for me.
Though its not just a female issue, or even males playing females, when the console version just came out I had a friend who was male playing male character and he refused to use voice chat anymore after being constantly being put down and harassed because he has a stutter. He left the game some time ago, with no other form of communication available, he was pretty much locked out of many things.
These are just our issues, but when you add them to what others have been saying, such as hearing impaired, social anxiety, dont have a mutable mic, language barriers, need to be quiet while playing because members of household are sleeping, etc etc It starts to become obvious that more than just a few are locked out of communications in this game and without the addition of an alternative form of communication, I suspect many will probably just give up and leave as my friend and I have..
Be yourself and do not try to mimic text chat behaviors in voice chat.

I just have to ask, what exactly are 'text chat behaviors' ?

Editing our own text bubbles is barely a change to what we have now and I can see many people abusing it. Also the small proximity just renders it useless. It'll be a novelty change that will not give us what chat on consoles will. That's me not saying no to editing your emotes all together ... I'm saying it should be for fun purposes.

Now back to text chat for consoles.. Firstly PC has text chat, I've seen it on YouTube videos sitting there in all its glory doing no harm and so much good!! Every time I watch an ESO video from a PC player the jealousy is real!

Let's then talk about how voice chat is working for grouping up... In major cities during peak hour there are so many massive booming voices all yelling and talking over each other usually just having a chat about how many girls they've banged and how great they are at doing it, whilst some other guy is yelling "selling daedra hearts 2k each" (good luck mate), whilst some other guy is trolling with their atrocious rap beats, whilst some baby is screaming in the background and rarely; VERY rarely you will hear "anyone doing a Vet dungeon" but you can't trace the voice because of that damn music taking over the mic. Now let's decide it's too busy there for now, we'll come back in half an hour... Guess what? The teenage boys are still talking about how big their *** are, the music has gotten louder and even worse and the other guy is now selling daedra hearts for 3k a pop.

Now imagine all that going on in text chat? Guess what? Everyone can get their word in... At the same time!! You can also be anywhere on the map!! The boys that want to just chat for fun can go to the general chat tab! The guy wanting to sell his daedra hearts can go put a post up in the trading section! The guy playing his rap beats can use his headphones and leave us in peace and the guy looking for a vet dungeon group can go to the group finder and visually peruse who else is online and looking and which class, level and role they are without waiting light years for the auto grouper to put you in a group that ends up putting you in a group of three after waiting an hour.

And for those that don't like the idea of group chat they can go to their settings and select "hide text chat" from their HUD settings.

This ridiculous emote wheel is nothing 99% of us who want text chat thinks is useful in any way.

Zone / gamewide communication without having to hear mouthbreathers in area chat is what text chat gets you. More socialization all around.

Speaking however we want , I'll be damned if someone thinks they can dictate how we talk in game and on the boards. Arrogance knows no bounds.

Well whatever the cost that's what they said they would consider...adding more radial text chat options.
Adding more pre sets and some more customization doesn't seem to be something they won't do so trying to give you all hope.

    Tryin...

I rather they didn't waste the resources on something just as useless as quickchat. A quickchat+ will still be useless and will not allow a person to have a normal conversation via text.

I too am curious what you meant when you said...

"Be yourself and do not try to mimic text chat behaviors in voice chat."

    You mean role play?

Your speech shouldn't be as your written words.
I hear ppl in towns talking (in spam or announcing) vs speaking to ppl.

Voice chat shouldn't sound like how text chat reads basically

Ahh ok. So like the guys that repeat they are selling daedra hearts and motifs, over and over again to no one specific. Yeah I agree with that, and while annoying, I think they are just trying to make the best of a very limited communication (and trading) system.

I wonder if people realize that individual, customizable chat bubbles/floating text would be a greater strain on the system than standard text chat. It would also be much more cluttered. Imagine multiple people all typing at once and it filling the whole screen with text.

Please elaborate because 30 characters above a head is no did than what we have now using radial chat emotes.
How does a customized radial chat option cause an issue that the radial doesn't?

Yep...those are who I call auto mute. I don't even bother to waste any time thinking about it. Then the channels all clear

Have already returned to FFXIV. I really liked this game and tried to give it a go, but I can't get past an MMO not having text chat like they have had for 15 plus years.

EVERYONE WINS! FLAWLESS VICTORY! FATALITY! (Sorry I've been playing MKX a bit this week hahahaha).

But none of this is even being considered

The guy that no longer works there said that. Not zos. So, yeah.... your argument loses validity... again....

Does it though? If the guy that said no left, and they come out and say that there is still no change to that opinion, how does that mean it's invalid?

I'd also like to point out, for the sake of argument, that you guys want text chat... from people that can't even get the mail system to work properly.

It's possible that text chat doesn't work properly on the console versions. I mean, just look at the mail system. That's a rudimentary text chat and it hardly ever works properly. You can't just shoehorn stuff into a game and be done with it, game making doesn't work that way.

no excuse. they should have been working on this when they were still fine tuning the game. it couldnt have been that hard. they could have found way to do it. if they hadnt put in the mail system maybe text chat would have been here instead
