Hanging on first loading screen after patch download

After some time I'm playing TESO again, now the Launcher downloaded a few patches. But the same as in the past, loading screens are taking very long before they go to the next. This always occured right after a patch. Once he's further in his loading screen, tomorrow for example, I won't have this problem again as it won't download any patch.

Currently I'm hanging on the loading screen after filling in credentials. TESO icon keeps loading, already for 15 minutes.

This is normal behaviour for several updates now, ZOS have never even bothered to post in the many threads about this which have been opened over many months.

To see what's happening on a PC open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.

There you'll fine the ESO .EXE and if you watch you'll see it used 100% of a single core, ie. it's CPU-bound, and the memory usage will tick up a few Mb at a time. Once it gets to around 800Mb the increase in memory consumption will rise to well over 1Gb at which point you'll finally get to the character screen.

With ZOS' silence we can only speculate what it's doing, nor can we know why it can't be done during the patching process when the game can't connect with the servers being down, but only when the servers are back up and we then have to sit and wait for this monstrosity to happen.

After a patch it rebuilds the shadercache.cooked file, this can take a little while so that is why the loading takes longer after a patch. Once it is re-built it won't need to be done again until the next patch. You can see this file in:

    Documents> Elder Scrolls Online> liveeu> shadercache.cooked

You will experience the same thing if you delete the shadercache.cooked file, it will be re-created the next time you start up the game and loading will take a little longer just like after a patch.

    Now you know!

Thx guys for the advice. I thought it did something in the background as it only happens right after every patch. But I never checked the CPU usage in those cases.

    Explained very clearly.
