Pros to having text chat on console.

Easier grouping for PvP aND pve

Guild recruitment, and communication with all guild members would be much easier because you won't have to be in the same voice channel to communicate with them, you just send some text and your whole guild can see it.

Selling/buying items will be much easier and far less anoying.

No one will be excluded from communication with the eacjother, the deaf and hard of hearing will now be able to effectively communicate.

All around socializing will be easier, more diverse and n will bring the whole eso console community together as a whole.

Tamriel will no longer feel like a huge lonely single player game.

    The community grows

    Cons to having text chat

    Possible trolls,

    Ocassional arguments.

    Spam, and minimal ui clutter.

The pros heavily outweigh the cons in this situation.

Trolling is inevitable, clearly we can see this is true based on just having a voice chat! It's even more annoying than spam bots texting me. Atleast I don't have to chime in on it.
Arguments through texts? Oh the horror! lol

With a text option, you should be able to minimize the text window/size or to turn it off completely.

I agree, which is why I believe we should make the push to get a text chat like pc has. It has everything we are asking for and there really is no solid reason for us to not have it.

OK how in oblivion do you type with one hand hold a controller with another and pay attention to what is going on in game?
You can't, so only use is when idle and not engaged in combat.

Yep...it's definitely a challenge that needs attention which right now, there isn't a solve possible. Even the Xbox chat pad coming in November still does not address the issue.

Got any thoughts on a solve for that issue?

As previously stated game developers can change their minds and they have not 100% confirmed that they will not add PC text chat.

"Is it possible we could have a text chat? Yes. Will we? I don’t think we can safely say one way or another. It probably is safe to say if we add a more text centric way to chat it won’t be a straight chat window".

The probably in that sentence means its unlikely but not impossible.

This is what most people want in this thread, I am not here to compromise with other forum users. I will state what I wish and wait for the developers to say it will or will not happen.

You dont have too. Your question is seriously a minor issue, how can you figure how to do one thing and can't do another? Practice.
You make a weak counterpoint against having a text chat. Clearly you don't text and drive, or atleast shouldn't. Why would you need to chat/type while fighting? That's where your voice comes into play. Text chat isn't for the in betweens, but for the before and afters.
The beauty of the text chat is that you don't HAVE too use it.

Having two options (Voice and chat) is better than only one.

LOL, you need to reasess your comment and re-read the last several to dozens of pages of ressons why. And then realize your issue of whatever it is against text chat and realize you don't have to use it.

I listed twenty or so reasons why it's needed, personally.

And btw way, games are games. Sure, but MMOs? Have you even played other mmos? Specifically ones as cliche as ESO? I would think not.

Use the text to organise forming groups, pvp, sales. Etc and the voice chat when actually doing the activity. In other console MMO's I have only ever typed in a fight when someone has been missing a crucial part normally during a boss fight and there is either no voice or they are not responding. But these are emergency situations and are very rare. Once again. Using one does net preclude the other. They complement each other admirably.
You give me a chat box ZOS and I'll start giving you my money again.

I'm wondering if adding a text box in the social tab would work?

    Think about it.

    Start >Social> Text chat channels.

This would get rid of any UI clutter complaints. This would add our text chat with multiple channels just like voice chat has, and the day would be successful.

    Or
add it to maybe the map section or somewhere else out or sight, when you're playing the game.

    Thoughts?

Just seeing this thread as i guess its now the defualt "add text before we allo insane" thread. No text in a mmo is absolutely ruining the game for every player i know that has played mmos before and actually knows what they are missing out on. --It is a none discussion. Playing a mmo without text is not really playing a mmo- /end discussion. the amount of things made frustrating or a 1000 times more difficult without text is endless. It is pure insanity and it is a *** shame that a game this good... a mmo that could have broken over to mainstream console ... left out 99% of what allows players to communicate in a 'massive' sense. Not shouting to 50 people in elden root over their music and crying babaies, but shouting to 10, 000s in text when you actually want to accomplish ANYTHING. That, is how a mmos work.

At the very least, update those emotes to something needed.

The Group up emote is pretty generic.
    Or maybe have custom emotes?

One way to fix UI clutter in the local area text chat, is to have text bubbles above players heads. That way it doesnt spam your screen unless youre in a crowded area, but at least the chat bubble is only so big.

Some people are saying you can't text chat and play with a controller a the same time...

Well if they do allow features like text chat, I'm not sure how they are implementing it...but I am more then confident that people will be able to use a keyboard to play and that kinda solves it...Ive done it when I played WoW.

Again other people have different feelings...which is fine we all have different values when it comes to improvements in thebgame...but I don't see why we shouldnt. I don't see why we should be deprived.

Again it is optional, it will encourage socializing, and I'm sure there are going to be problems such as not being able to play and type at the same time...but I'm sure there will be work arounds...like just using a keybaord. You don't even need to use it 100% if you prefer controller, just switch it out when you actually need to talk...or use a mic...

Some of people's arguments seem to be that since they find that they may find difficulty in fighting and typing at the same time a challenge...it seems like they don't want it at all, even though it will solve many more issues, just because it may offer a challenge does not mean we shouldn't include it, because by not having it, we are neglecting social opportunities for others and not really solving an issue where people prefer not to use a mic (and therefor not use one at all), if you do have a challenge use a mic at that point, a lot of people prefer mic when heavy teamwork is involved anyways...

Also, a suggestion, for those of us that don't have a keyboard, maybe let people use the ps4 app or xbox app and allow us to use the second screen feature to use it as a keyboard to talk in chat.

This would be great but ultimately the problem is it requires a compatible third party device. I'd absolutely love having my iPad up with an ESO app that I could chat through, or even better view the map of Cyrodiil on a second screen without having to be out of combat to pull up the map.

But again, it requires that secondary device which only a small % of people would have.

Even gaming headsets are not owned by the majority of PS4 users, expecting a higher adoption rate of even another device is naive. It would be amazing, and it would open up so many options for us, especially in PVP, I'd love to be able to contact the leaders of other parties quickly and easily, but as it stands a PSN message is my best bet, and that assumes I know who they are by name.

Man, second screen would be slick.

Well most people now a days seem to have smart phones, which could use the 2nd screen feature..m and if people have ibterbet, im sure people could manage to save for a cheap usb or Bluetooth keyboard if necessary

    P.s.

I'm not really sure why people are so against the idea. If text chat was included in start of game, would anyone be posting on the forums to remove it? Not once in an mmo have i seen people complain that they could text chat...ever...not even someone say that they believe text change should simply be changed to mic chat...nothing..besides, the mods already have the code to make it seems it's just simply putting it in or not so I doubt they are losing value time or effort into fixing other things in the game just to input this feature

Hmm, I think its because of the way consules are designed, they don't want to add text chat because of how big the game is like 80gb's Plus even more I think :{ I don't have ps4 or xbox one, so I play on pc and thats where I am staying! But to add text chat would put strain on game, they probaly figure this thats why they don't want to do it because of the problems they would have to fix with it. Also adding zone chat to each zone would decrease preformace. Also consules don't have that good of ram for it. So yeah they are limited in what they can do, if they compressed the data maybe they could had text chat with out those problems.

What I'm having a hard time understanding here is the rebuttals to the text chat in general.

"We don't need that" " Screen Clutter" yada yada.

Sure, we dont NEED it, since I've proven this theory to myself to leveling to VR 10 with out one.

However, we don't need a lot of things in ESO, like the group finder, PVP ranks, Vendors(Since most of you who reject the idea of having a text chat seem pretty stacked as far as connections, sales, guilds etc...), and a lot more.

But each one of these additions is still an addition. That's what MMOs are about, having multiple options in any format. Whether it be for communicating, trading, fighting in PVP, and so on. A virtually endless amount of things to do and essentially how to go about and doing them.

I guarantee, if text chat was implemented, you will be more relieved than us being stressed out for not having it.

People whom aren't getting the concept of a text chat or don't want it, I don't think fully realize the wonders it actually brings.

If I told you, text chat can heavily reduce your waiting time of joining random groups of your liking, you wouldn't raise an eyebrow?

If I told you, text chat can bring you an additional 20 to 30k a week(or whatever the amount it may be) in gold with the same amount of time or less that you use to acquire money already, you wouldn't raise interest?

If I told you, text chat was optional, and I mean optional on using it or not, you wouldn't care regardless if it's there or not. Especially if you're able to hide it.

If I told you, the ones who actually want a text chat of some sort are willing to dish out a few extra bucks to utilize a text chat(aka a keyboard), why does it matter to you? Again, it would be optional, especially how they've implemented the importance of voice chat.

If I told you, you could find random people in a tenth of the time you spend scouring the PVE lands to get a quest or dungeon done, you wouldn't raise interest?

If I told you, you could let your guildies and other's know that you need help, items, have questions without worrying if they're online or not , you wouldn't raise interest?

Or raising awareness that you have a good item for sale, WITHOUT coming off as a sleazy salesman via voice chat, you wouldn't raise interest?

If you said no to any of these, then I feel having a text chat wouldn't change how you go about things, and that's fine. But please, don't suppress our wants and needs for your own.

MMOs are about diversity. Plain and simple.

What's more efficient? Texting a buddy while he's working, or calling him? What's more efficient when your wife wants you to grab additional things from the store? Calling or texting the list?

Both tools utilize a balance with each other.

It's like a laptop vs a tablet, what a laptop can't do, a tablet can, and visa versa.

Ten years ago, saying MMOS are coming to consoles, youd be laughed at. Now? More popular by the day. MMOs most standard communication tool is indeed a text chat, regardless of on console or not. Facts are facts.

I just don't see how having one is a bad thing. Screen clutter is fixable, so is spam. There really is no reason to not have one.

Not having a text chat heavily suppresses the general public from playing/working together.

By default, the voice only option, makes you rely ONLY on your guild and not those around you. This is a huge no no.

And the irony of it all is, some of you are dishing out $15 a month(ESO Plus) to grab a few extra things here and there, when in reality, all of the positives I've stated for having a text chat would probably make you richer, level much faster and so on, but don't want to spend just $15 once( Keyboard)? Oh the humor!

Thanks BigMac for properly stating that it is your opinion and not bashing anyone that disagrees with you as many in this thread are doing. I do not support text chat, I feel it would be a hot disorganized mess due to the controller text input that 90%+ of the users would be using - BUT - I do agree that communication in this game is not ideal.

We run two or three raids in Cyrodiil, some are guildies some are not. So you have people hopping between guild chat and area chat, guild chat and party chat, etc. Some of our Crowns will have guild chat active but have their mic set to area chat so they can coordinate with their party and still hear the guild.

We use the PSN app on iPhone a lot, we do text chat through that because it has an actual keyboard vs. the controller text input (because that is very slow). It also lets us call for help when folks are offline and we are getting stomped we can get our guildies logged in so that we don't lose Emperorship, etc.

I know the Swarm guild uses IRC chat as well as their primary interface with members.

It all comes down to the fact that a controller is a slow text input method, ZOS experimented with text chat and they didn't like it. My opinion is that they saw what I fear, that it does not meet the quality standards of Elder Scrolls because of the quality of the language that would be input via a controller vs. a proper keyboard.

Again... if everyone had a keyboard, it'd be no question, but even with the availability of a keyboard that doesn't mean the average player is going to go out and get one. It's a tough problem to solve.

Guild Traders are a great example though of where a company made a design decision and will stick to it regardless of how many people create forum posts asking for an auction house.

You lost my attention at the bolded part. Seriously, 90%... How can you seriously believe that 90% of the player base will not take that spare usb keyboard that is taking dust in the closet, buy one for 10-20$, or get the gamepad mini keyboards, that aleready exists on PS4 and is coming on xbox? Yes, there is people who will want to use only their gamepad, but I think they will be the minority, but not at 10%, let's be realist here, maybe 25%? And I expect that people who don't want to use any keyboard will also be the ones who will disable the chat box anyways.

Yes, it will probably create a gap between those who don't want to use text and those who don't want to use voice. But this gap is aleready there, except that at this time, those who don't want to use voice have nothing to compensate, which is a problem, because in a mmorpg, communication is THE most important thing.

I'm about done on this post. The ridiculous attempts at "counter points" or lack of any actual point being argued from the "other side" ( I'm attempting to not upset anyone or point fingers in any way before I offend or attack anyone in some form without realizing) Anyway.. The arguments are actually starting to make me mad. Sad but true. So I must exclude myself from this thread. We have all stated our points. The "other side" have all failed to make sense in any of theirs. I'm fairly certain Zenimax can't possibly ignore the amount of demand coming from just this thread alone. Not to mention the last one that got closed. I for one will eventually give up on the lack of communication for any attempt at organizing group content. Some of us only have so much time to play, so when we do, WE PLAY. Pedal to the floor, get stuff done. Unfortunately without the ability to organize anything, it's just not happening as it should. Frustration becomes a bigger part of the game than enjoyment when you attempt to run the same Dungeon over and over and continue to fail after an 30 minute Que, because most of the time not everyone shows up. I gave them their hundred bucks for the premium digital. They get my 15 a month for plus, and whatever extra I spend on crowns. So I obviously have given them what they wanted. However once frustration reaches it's peak, then Zenimax can keep their "other side" players and 6 month casuals until console ESO is a ghost town. Happy Gaming everyone. Console players with half a brain. I wish us luck.

Someone did give a good idea though of putting a Text Chat channel in Social, then you can text away when not fighting
ZoS please understand everyone thinks and pronounces things differently, so please add to your 'rules' that things get removed if the Mod doesn't actually quite understand phrasing
