Thanks BigMac for properly stating that it is your opinion and not bashing anyone that disagrees with you as many in this thread are doing. I do not support text chat, I feel it would be a hot disorganized mess due to the controller text input that 90%+ of the users would be using - BUT - I do agree that communication in this game is not ideal.

We run two or three raids in Cyrodiil, some are guildies some are not. So you have people hopping between guild chat and area chat, guild chat and party chat, etc. Some of our Crowns will have guild chat active but have their mic set to area chat so they can coordinate with their party and still hear the guild.

We use the PSN app on iPhone a lot, we do text chat through that because it has an actual keyboard vs. the controller text input (because that is very slow). It also lets us call for help when folks are offline and we are getting stomped we can get our guildies logged in so that we don't lose Emperorship, etc.

I know the Swarm guild uses IRC chat as well as their primary interface with members.

It all comes down to the fact that a controller is a slow text input method, ZOS experimented with text chat and they didn't like it. My opinion is that they saw what I fear, that it does not meet the quality standards of Elder Scrolls because of the quality of the language that would be input via a controller vs. a proper keyboard.

Again... if everyone had a keyboard, it'd be no question, but even with the availability of a keyboard that doesn't mean the average player is going to go out and get one. It's a tough problem to solve.

Guild Traders are a great example though of where a company made a design decision and will stick to it regardless of how many people create forum posts asking for an auction house.

You have a mic feature already which people don't have a keyboards, i have a keyboard from my ps3 that works on my ps4 and I'm sure if anyone doesn't wanna use a mic, they will get a keyboard...without a keyboard it kind of gets rid of the mmo aspect for me because I dont want to use a mic.. i enjoyed using a keyboard too. Besides, I don't want people being able to listen to what music I'm listening to or who I talk to...

Anyone who is playing eso probably played mmos and understand that a keyboard will be useful but...again if they don't wanna use a keyboard you guys do allow a mic so for those who don't wanna purchase a keyboard have the mic option soo why deprive those who wanna use keyboard

Also personally, I'm not very extroverted as I'm sure a lot of people in this game are, and instead of talking over a mic, I'm sure a lot of us would just prefer a keyboard...a lot of us just liked to talk on a keyboard and it's more comfortable for us...

Also, a suggestion, for those of us that don't have a keyboard, maybe let people use the ps4 app or xbox app and allow us to use the second screen feature to use it as a keyboard to talk in chat.

I'd like to socialize but I don't want to use it on a mic...or participate in a guild but the chat kinda sucks..

I don't see how adding a keyboard feature will cause any negative changes in the game...more people will talk, inrease socializing and communications, and for those who don't wanna bother with a keyboard can use the mic still...and maybe even add an option to turn the chat window off when you wanna just focus on the game (like make it look how it works now) and maybe add the window be displayed in the 2nd screen option and let the chat show there maybe too

Please vote in the console text chat thread so ZoS can see how many people want text chat

...and dueling in the dueling thread but personally I want text chat first...

Explain why dcuo, ff14, everquest and other console mmo's have text chat and it works perfect? Your "fears" are unfounded.

DCUO has text chat and it's an abbreviated mess. I'm sorry if you feel differently, that is certainly your right to your opinion, but you need to be careful about saying "fact" or "true" when talking about an opinion.

When text input is slow - as it is with a controller - you get abbreviated text, short one word replies and you never see punctuation or complete sentences. Blizzard opted not to include Voice chat for Diablo 3 and that works great, I made a ton of friends in parties over voice chat and we'd use the party system to organize groups.

But you don't have to convince me bud, you have to convince ZOS. =)

The area voice chat has grown on me. People hanging around crafting sites and advertising their wares.

It adds something to the game.

I'm cool with text chat as long as the area voice chat remains intact. I personally like it. Makes the towns and cities feel city like. Cities are loud. Elden Root is loud. I like it.

Both should be in the game. Because we need both to effectively communicate. Voice chat is fine as is, I would just like them to add a mute button and a way b to control people's volume.

I respect your opinions about both....

just to point out tho, there are ways to mute people already and there is a setting to control player voice volumne already.

I was not aware of those features. Where are they at? I been just muting my TV because I couldn't find those features

each console allows any gamer to mute a players voice as well as block a player entirely but is done outside of the game.

(how) - quickly go into the menu, hit Y on xbox and RB to see recent interactions. Select the gamertag and go to their profile and hit mute. should take 2-4 seconds total.
*This is also how to invite ppl to a group or guild via voice chat and why I'm suggesting that text chat if added should be within the social menu vs outside so that this functionality meshes well with any interactions a player may desire.

Within the game, options look at player voice at the bottom of your volume settings.
If you dont want to hear ppl but do want to see the pop-ups turn it all the way down...it'll almost be muted.

Player One: "Hey, dude, how do you type so fast into this text chat?"

Player Two: "I just bought a wireless usb keyboard from Amazon for 15 bucks."

Player One: "Cool, I didn't know they had them, and were so cheap. I am gunna have to tell my friends about this. They have been having trouble using the console onscreen input."

Then they tell two friends...and they tell two friends...and so on...and so on....

Anybody that will spend 100 bucks for a semi-decent headset, I think, would have no problem spending 15 to 20 bucks for a wireless keyboard.
(I am using the PS4 Browser to post this using the same wireless keyboard I have been using on my Xbox360 & PS3 for years.)

Also, a suggestion, for those of us that don't have a keyboard, maybe let people use the ps4 app or xbox app and allow us to use the second screen feature to use it as a keyboard to talk in chat.

This would be great but ultimately the problem is it requires a compatible third party device. I'd absolutely love having my iPad up with an ESO app that I could chat through, or even better view the map of Cyrodiil on a second screen without having to be out of combat to pull up the map.

But again, it requires that secondary device which only a small % of people would have.

Even gaming headsets are not owned by the majority of PS4 users, expecting a higher adoption rate of even another device is naive. It would be amazing, and it would open up so many options for us, especially in PVP, I'd love to be able to contact the leaders of other parties quickly and easily, but as it stands a PSN message is my best bet, and that assumes I know who they are by name.

Man, second screen would be slick.

Isn't the reason there's not text chat in the console versions something to do with the business agreement between ZOS, Sony and/or Microsoft? My understanding is that text chat was off the table as a concession to the console makers.

Aside from your opinions on the poll, what thoughts do you have about the ongoing discussion?

I love voice chat, and it was a great decision on their part to add it because this game just feels much different than any other MMO I've played. However I do understand why some people feel the game needs text chat and I agree it would make grouping, trading and recruiting much easier. I believe it has to be 100% optional and should only be zone chat, lets compromise and have a zone chat with a trade channel. The game feels alittle flat in its current state. Id like to be able to link items in a chat window for selling or trading purposes. I will admit it wouldnt break the game if the feature isnt added, but it feels empty. The real issue I have is my guild tags not showing below my GT! grr (Different topic)

I will say though, I wasnt too keen on voice chat when I started the game because I suffer from anxiety and wearing a headset for too long bothers me(not for social reasons) but once I got over it and started PvPing in Cyrodil, I gave it a shot and I have to say its great and I love it as I stated above and I wouldnt touch text chat while im in Cyrodil, voice chat is a MUST for Cyrodil IMO.

Just a few weeks ago, I was grouped up on our way to attack a keep, a long ride mind you, and my horse is pretty darn slow so ofcourse I was falling behind while the others zoomed past me. A group of Daggers were waiting to gank me, about 3 or 4 of them. I quickly yell out in voice "Im being attacked, come help" and the group quickly turned around and charged in to save me. Had I wasted 10 seconds to type out "Hey Im being attacked, behind you guys help" while im standing there getting whacked by these 4 players, I would have been dead by the time they reacted to my cry (If they even had text window opened to read it) and had a long lonely ride back to the keep we were attacking. Instead I was able to call for help while popping potions and CCing this group just long enough for help to arrive. Those 10 seconds made all the difference.

I love voice chat, but Im 100% for text chat as an option, because this is an awesome game and why not have the best of both worlds. Text chat wouldnt/cant replace voice chat, but it adds to the game and hopefully we get some closure on this issue with a definitive answer, because at the very least, the people in support of the feature deserve that. They can then decide to move on or accept whichever stance ZOS ultimately takes.

Number 1: I dont mind voice chat. Its very useful for talking when inside instances and for orders during pvp. I want text to chat so I can get IN groups in the first place.

Number 2: If the average player never goes on the forums this is not a case in point either way. Every single person not on these forums might want text chat, they might not. We can only go on what we have which is this forum. Most people either dont know of the forums or avoid them.

Number 3 and most importantly: This is not a discussion. It is a vote/poll on whether people want this included. You may state your position but there is no point trying to convince people on either side. Sticking to your guns and basically stating you want nothing but text chat is not "toxic". It is people stating that they will not settle for anything else. The arguments tend to happen because of the actions of a few individuals who do nothing but try and make the situation descend into a slanging match as it gets the thread shut down and they get what they want. The trolls are out there folks.

And lastly say what you like about numbers but people HAVE left due to this issue. I can say this rather confidently because myself and my missus are amongst them. I seriously doubt we are alone.

    Thanks for sharing....
The PvP situation....me personally I like this reality as its fun if you're on the other side. It sucks when you are you but having text chat removes any fog of war and is like playing chess with two ppl telling the players what the next move is before it happens.....to me that not fun

SO you're in hopes of a text chat feature in order to facilitate trading, grouping, recruiting and zone chat.
-To me, all of those can be addressed without adding text chat but with changes from the overall UI and system by Zenimax.

IF ZOS were to add a zone based trade (not an AH but a way to trade without needing to use voice or text chat but within the console UI in a zone) would you still feel the need for text chat?

IF ZeOS changed the Grouping Tools to function as we think they should work,..would you still feel the need for text chat?

If ZOS adds a recruiting tool (like a functioning Grouping tool) would you still feel the need for text chat?

Basically...is it text chat that's needed or are there quality of life improvements that are driving people to fall back on adding text chat?

I'm sure voice is awesome for PvP and Destiny and Call of Duty, but there are many of us that PvE and role play in mmorpgs. No one is trying to take away your voice chat at all. I really don't understand this all or nothing mentality, and the expectation that everyone must be forced to either listen to you on voice or spend the game in social isolation.

Glad that you've joined the forums and welcome!

    Thanks for sharing....
The PvP situation....me personally I like this reality as its fun if you're on the other side. It sucks when you are you but having text chat removes any fog of war and is like playing chess with two ppl telling the players what the next move is before it happens.....to me that not fun

Simple you make the chat in pvp only able to be seen by your own faction this is even more secure than on pc as it would require someone to have 2 consoles running

SO you're in hopes of a text chat feature in order to facilitate trading, grouping, recruiting and zone chat.
-To me, all of those can be addressed without adding text chat but with changes from the overall UI and system by Zenimax.

Firstly "to me". Second you can improve the ui and add text chat no reason why both cant be present and good quality/b]

IF ZOS were to add a zone based trade (not an AH but a way to trade without needing to use voice or text chat but within the console UI in a zone) would you still feel the need for text chat?

    Eh?

IF ZeOS changed the Grouping Tools to function as we think they should work,..would you still feel the need for text chat?

Yes as queing as a dps will still be slower. By being able to advertise you may draw in a tank/healer quicker. Also see below*

If ZOS adds a recruiting tool (like a functioning Grouping tool) would you still feel the need for text chat?

A recruiting tool would indeed be welcome and would reduce the need for a text chat box for this function. However please see below*

Basically...is it text chat that's needed or are there quality of life improvements that are driving people to fall back on adding text chat?

*What you have done there is take specific instances on how the need for text chat could be reduced or not needed. Indeed a fixed group finder and or recruitment tool would be excellent additions. But we are not just talking about those things are we. There are all the groups of people for various reasons that have been listed many times by many different people who are either unable or unwilling to talk on voice chat and a text based communication system would be their solution to be able to play this game at the same level that you appear to yourself. Why do you want to deny them this just so you can not suffer minor irritation by having a small arrow denoting where a collapsible text box would be

Nope, game wouldnt NEED text chat if they found ways to work those features in imo.. however Id add abit more to the recruiting tool, AND a guild based text chat wouldnt hurt (50 voices in my ear sure do lol) Also chat bubbles for the role players would also cater to that audience without having a global chat window that clogs up screen. You see.. theres way to workaround and compromise.

So I ask would this work for you as a player opposed to text chat....

    - Guild based text chat
    - Chat bubbles which would serve as the equivalent to proximity chat

Along with the suggestions you made in your post? I think thats a nice compromise if we cant have a global text chat feature, and will solve alot of the issues people have because of the lack of said feature.

The vocal minority against text chat literally have nothing sound to stand on. We have asked them many times to explain their reasoning but they don't. They instead dance around the questions and then accuse us of being rude.

Im all for text chat as an option but I think chat bubbles are the solution for the role players

Chat bubbles are fine, as long as there is a way to disable them and if there is a text chat box.

Honestly your compromise is not needed. The way text chat is on the PC version is perfect. It doesn't clutter the ai, it is able to be minimized and off screen. You are able to pm,ignore, reply, etc to people. It does the job a text chat is expected to do.

I here your compromise and I respectfully state that it is not needed because the text chat has built in features that remedy your conerns.

Pc text chat is perfect for consoles. There is no need for a round about, the PC text chat solves just about everyone's issues and that is what we should request. It is the thing that will satisfy most of the community.

Basically...is it text chat that's needed or are there quality of life improvements that are driving people to fall back on adding text chat?

Sorry to butt in here, but you people do realize that not everyone does PvP.

No problem to jump in....but don't confuse these comments and questions to their post with the topic at hand.

Its not an all or nothing, and actually its a O K..if text chat is needed can we look at doing it like this...thus my idea as a compromise.

Now in regards to my comments to the post above...they are new to the forums and I am personally interested in their point of view.

OK then what other ideas do you have.

Officially speaking ZOS has already declined what exists on PC for console.

I already stated my ideas. And Zenimax never officially stated any of the sort.

Pc text chat is perfect for consoles. There is no need for a round about, the PC text chat solves just about everyone's issues and that is what we should request. It is the thing that will satisfy most of the community.

Actually folks, ZOS did say something to the effect of; "We are looking into adding some form of text based chatting. But, it will most likely not be in the form of a chatbaox.".

And, I am for the simple, reliable, easy to use, and OPTIONAL Textbox....just relaying what I saw ZOS say.

I'd like to hear the logical argument against what I have mentioned multiple times.

I like and prefer to play the game , hearing the sounds and music that the developers spent lots of money and time on , and experience the world WITHOUT hearing shouts of babies , dogs barking , people making rude noises , or actually any sounds at all other than what the game has.

I am not alone in this. Many people play with headphones to hear just the game , and still enjoy communicating with many other people in the text chat.

Every console and PC mmorpg released so far has allowed me to enjoy the sound direction the developers chose to put in game , without being FORCED to hear others talking , and still allowed me to communicate with and make lots of in game friends.

What's the anti-text argument against this , rather logical , and normal expectation ?

I still see NO ONE on the anti-text chat team trying to logically explain how this ^^^^^^ is a bad reason to want and expect text chat.
