No you are right. They just leave and stop playing the game without a word.
Kind of how I've been going lately.... I use to post a lot with several dozen posts per day, but now it's averaging maybe one post every day, and I've stopped playing ESO Xbox (the ONLY version I have now) entirely due to its lack of text chat. I just got fed up with ZoS refusing to admit they made a mistake. Not just text chat, but several other things. Adding text chat would bring me back to ESO, but they need to seriously rethink their whole thoughts on listening to their customers if they want to keep customers playing.

Exactly. Its their silence thats killing it more than anything. Anyone can try new things or take a new direction that doesnt work. Its how quick you acknowledge and fix it.

The devs at ccp for eve online had a bug with their last patch that meant people could ignore standings to make a jump clone. The players said they loved it. So they kept it. All this in less than a week.

Good healthy interaction can be done. Sadly the industry standard these days is to be aloof from the players. Its sad really.
You give me a chat box ZOS and I'll start giving you my money again.

I kid you not, in this and the previous large thread that was locked , there were a couple of folks who tried to say that they were more bothered by people spamming in text chat , than having people scream in voice chat. One even tried to say that having 10 books opened to an offensive page was more bothersome than 10 people screaming obscenities in his hear. No joke.

That's the ridiculous mentality you are dealing with.

I have zero doubts that the only people who are defending offensive content in voice chat are the very same people who are doing abusive crap within the game themselves, or who want to know that they'll get away with it if they ever do.

Me, I really don't see how it's more fun to tell people to kill themselves than it is to treat other people as, well, PEOPLE. Empathy isn't something you're born knowing how to have; you have to learn it. People who don't have basic empathy for other humans are only making themselves look even worse than they already did by showcasing their ignorance. :P (Y'all, I'm excluding people who haven't mastered empathy due to to mental or developmental problems, 'cause that's a thing, and not those people's fault.)

And as far as typing goes, I don't know how it is for PS4, but XBone has smart glass which has made it super easy for me to type mail in game and guild message updates. So using that in text chat if you have a smart phone that has the smartglass app is awesome.

PS4 has some pretty good phone apps too, but I haven't explored their typing options. That would be a good thing to have! And the PS4 itself has some pretty good predictive text that makes typing messages with a controller fairly swift, so if that could be utilized in the game somehow, it would really help text chat. There's just no good reason to NOT have it!

I don't know if it's as much a "standard" as it is just the team behind it is so big that things often get mangled when communicating with each other. This is especially true when a company hires people just for the sake of talking on their forums to customers. In the past, it seems very rare that those forum employees convey what customers want to the devs, but rather convey what they they personally want.

I'm not sure if that fits these forums/company or not though.

I'm not sure if most of you have played MMOs, other than ESO. And I mean grind other mmos, reached level cap and gear level and so on. Not pick up for 5 minutes at a friends house, not playing through the trial of WoW to level 20 or the trial of FF ARR. I mean literally grinding through MMOS like you have here in ESO.

But let me tell you this.
Text chat is the most standard communication tool in the MMO genre.
I don't care if it clutters your screen. Most MMOs, have some sort of text size change option or an option to opt out of the entire window itself. It's just that simple.

It's really a matter of ignorance or laziness at this point, to not add one.

You guys can justify the need to not have a text chat all you want, I don't care. What I care about is ESO striving on consoles, and having a text chat would make things smoother.

    1. Dungeon runs will be easier to group and finish.
    2. Trades/sales will be amazingly quick.
    3. New connections/ New Guilds
    4. No longer having to hear kids whining in the background or cussing to sound cool, when clearly you just don't want to hear it.
    5. No more biting your nails on the short amount of time you have in the day to get things done.
    6. and so many more pros over cons here

For those of you whom have multiple players ready to go at your disposal at any time of the day, good for you. Because I surely don't.
For those of you who get lucky with group finder and you're queued with players at your level who want to do the dungeon you're trying to do AND they don't leave beyond a wipe or two, good for you.
For those of you who have a 24 man group anxiously awaiting to play alongside you in Cyrodiil at any time, well good for you.
For those of you who have no problem waiting on people to become available(it's ridiculous to defend waiting over just knocking something out before you have to leave), or whom are excited at the challenge of making anything happen using only your microphone, good for you.

MMOs aren't about whoever is the most sociable gets rewarded most. It's about diversity.
With a microphone only, you just don't get that.

A text chat box is not a bad thing, in fact, I can't believe I made it to VR10 without one. But I know what I'm doing to grind and find stuff, a lot of players don't.(I bet I'd be way higher if I had some balance of communication and standing around hoping players arrive)
Why should players feel the need to annoy people or be trolled through a microphone to get stuff done? I've never heard of such things.
I've literally stopped doing dungeons entirely because I can't stand the lack of trust, patience and so on from a lot of these PUB players, and to find out I usually have to rinse and repeat in finding another shady group. It's ridiculous.

Is it a matter of having to spend $15 on a wireless keyboard? Oh no! That's one month of ESO PLUS 0_O
If the text chat annoys you, then turn it off. Your objections are not helping, at all.

Get a text chat box, or I guarantee ESOS console population will be in the dust OR hardcore PVPers are the only ones left bickering about whose *** is the biggest (VIVA VOICE CHAT ONLY 0_O).
Either way, it doesn't look good to me.
    Enough said.

Could not agree more. I am not the most sociable person in the world and you are not going to find me trying to talk over others in any area of my life. It make me sad that some people cannot seem to understand that not everyone is outgoing as they are. Not every person is in a amazing guild with active players 24/7. Not every person has a friends list of a 100 people they can rely on. Some people need help in stepping outside there box and text chat can help. Text chat makes it so much easier for me to find people and communicate what I need. I don't have to feel like I am intruding on anyone. If someone sees the text and does not wish to join me they just ignore it and I am non the wiser. In voice chat if i ask for help and everyone goes quite it can be very uncomfortable. I prefer text chat and it helps me be more sociable.

I'd like to hear the logical argument against what I have mentioned multiple times.

I like and prefer to play the game , hearing the sounds and music that the developers spent lots of money and time on , and experience the world WITHOUT hearing shouts of babies , dogs barking , people making rude noises , or actually any sounds at all other than what the game has.

I am not alone in this. Many people play with headphones to hear just the game , and still enjoy communicating with many other people in the text chat.

Every console and PC mmorpg released so far has allowed me to enjoy the sound direction the developers chose to put in game , without being FORCED to hear others talking , and still allowed me to communicate with and make lots of in game friends.

What's the anti-text argument against this , rather logical , and normal expectation ?

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Still waiting for the attempt to logically tell me how this is "wrong" , not normal , or a bad request. I guess the ones here can't quite troll or spin this into something not normal or something reasonable console players have done for years on mmorpg's.
    Still waiting.

I'm not reading through pages and pages of threads to see if I am repeating myself here but figure another voice wont harm.

I have pc eso and xbox eso.

heres an example of how the current systems work

    PC
(reaching a huge amount of people - text) Zone Chat: Hey xy or z Dolmen/world boss is up, anyone wanna come help
    Result: People show up
    Console
(very localised voice) Local Chat: Zone Chat: Hey xy or z Dolmen/world boss is up, anyone wanna come help
Result - just one of the many examples, mostly which net you a set of pugs to help.
ANYONE WANNA BUY A MOTIF / MAT OFF ME / IM DANCING FOR GOLD PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEE / obnoxiously loud music playing (as your voice is lost in the crowd)

I have a usb keyboard on my console at all times (like many others do). It cost me about $20 on amazon so getting the gear to be able to type without using the controller isn't out of reach for anyone (there were cheaper ones on there too).

Another thing that should be addressed is not everyone likes to stand in a crowd and speak on open mic. Personally I can't think of anything worse. I hate that situation and it makes me extremely uncomfortable.
I am fine in small groups but not in a busy town situation where I would need to be to at least attempt to get a group going.

The other massive problem is for crafters. What is the point spending all these hours researching to make high end sets where we have no platform to sell to the masses. Standing in a local voice chat (if you are confidant enough to do this in the first place) doesn't cut it. Sure I can add a note in guilds on myself but it means someone has to look through rosters to even see it and the max players you can possibly reach if you have 5 full guilds is 2500 players. I need a zone wide trade chat to sell my services. No brainer there.

Guild recruiting. I have a pet hate of getting guild invites randomly. I want to know about the guild before I join. On PC I would either need to read the adverts in text chat or ask in zone chat for people to recommend a guild and boom...I would have PMs from recruiters where I could have conversations and find the right guild for me.

Guild Management. Having only the MOTD to communicate with guild members is so limiting. There is only so much space to communicate the guilds direction with its members. Again a text chat and being available to answer questions would be so much easier. The mail system is so broke (I can rarely be mailed as I come up as user not found) and people have to take questions outside the game onto xbox live messages. So may extra steps taken instead of guild chat or a pm system if we are online.

I was fast in levelling up and reached the higher vet ranks before a lot of people, I wanted to do craglorn. I had one option to find players who also wanted to do it - group finder. The one and only time I used that was to find a pledge dungeon group (we had 3 and needed one.) It took 2 hours to find someone and it was that current day's pledge. It doesn't work well enough.
Again in this case, zone chat would have been ideal to shout out for people to run with.
I have ended up making a second toon in an alliance I have friends on so I can do this content. My other friends fell away from the game making it a very lonely place without working stepping stones for shyer people to find groups and get to know people.

So I now have a vr14 crafter who STILL needs craglorn and has been shelved and a vr3 toon which is painful to level since I have already done the grind so recently.

Text chat would help massively in so many areas for me.

All people want here is a response, a word to say hey we HEAR you, we are working towards it and doing our best or in worst case, we can't implement this because *reasons*.

Don't make people find something new because they can't communicate in a way that is logical and pleasant. I rarely go into area chat because of reasons listed above (music blasting, TVs blaring, families arguing, people being plain rude). There's no way to mute them in game so I sit in an xbox party so I don't hear them at all.

Don't even get me started on trying to get a warewolf/vamp bite...

Also to Eriquito3, your rudeness does not change the fact that NewBlacksmurf is right. The forum population is maybe 3% of the actual games population, thus the margin for error on a forum poll, a poll where people are more likely to click on it to begin with if they agree with the subject line, would just be impossible to calculate.

I play in the largest PVP guild on PS4 and we have an incredibly robust voice chat rule set and I never hear anyone complain about a lack of text chat. We all just use the PSN app on our phones to send direct messages outside of voice chat.

A poll on the general forums is not a scientific process - I give you ZOS' choosing not to respond to the text chat topic as proof that they already tried it, didn't like it, and will not be adding it.

What this poll and other forum polls do represent is from start date to current date, the number of forums participants who are interested enough during the time they are using the forums to vote one way or another.

Thats it....its something to discuss but nothing to draw financial decisions on or to determine how to spend development time.

Um, actually as the OP, I can tell you that I haven't been one of the ones arguing for this since the beginning; I started about the time I began this poll. I then told the people I play with about the poll and several signed up for the forum JUST TO VOTE!

With others who have shared the recent Xbox info about a chat pad do you know anything from Sony that could offer a less obtrusive ability to play and type?

If Sony does this around the same time what are your ideas about the compromise of using the social in game window?

An optional device is still not the same thing as something everyone had... text chat on consoles is always awful. It's an abbreviated mess and an affront to the English language. If every PS4 shipped with a keyboard, cool, but since that will never be the case we'd still have the majority using the controller to chat... and that would be ugly as sin.

Text chat is for PC games. Voice chat is for consoles.

It adds something to the game.

I'm cool with text chat as long as the area voice chat remains intact. I personally like it. Makes the towns and cities feel city like. Cities are loud. Elden Root is loud. I like it.

Explain why dcuo, ff14, everquest, and other mmo's on console have text chat and work perfect.

    Explain.

Even Defiance on the PS3 had text chat LOL.

Soon you won't even need a USB keyboard on XBOX, new chatpad coming. But please, continue burying your heads in the sand over the issue Zeni.

Both should be in the game. Because we need both to effectively communicate. Voice chat is fine as is, I would just like them to add a mute button and a way b to control people's volume.

The topic has come up a lot and for the most part its the same people voting.
Some new, some old but its the same folks on all sides of this discussion.

Each thread does not represent new votes nor does it represent console only or and specific platform. It doesn't represent actual players, it represent customers who bought the game who have registered to use the forums.

What this poll and other forum polls do represent is from start date to current date, the number of forums participants who are interested enough during the time they are using the forums to vote one way or another.

Thats it....its something to discuss but nothing to draw financial decisions on or to determine how to spend development time.

Not really. Me, my brother, and 4 other guildies created a profile here just to vote and support this cause. We are also asking others ingame that want this feature to do the same so yes, by and large, this poll represents the playbase, and its not the same people. Theres people creating profiles just to come voice their concerns and new people will continue to join in on it. You are wrong.

I think a lot of people are skim reading and missing this...."for the most part"..."Some new"....

Glad that you've joined the forums and welcome!
Aside from your opinions on the poll, what thoughts do you have about the ongoing discussion?

You have to view someones gamer card on Xbox to mute them. There is not quick in game mute button. There are a lot of things that could make the communication in this game better and text chat is the best option in my opinion.
