I think that after a guild takes a keep or resource they should have the option to hire merc's to help defend it. Just a few extra NPC's that cost alliance points that are wearing merc looking clothes.

They were fun while they lasted, though. Their placement could make for some interesting stronghold defenses. I don't recall people asking for them to come back, however, with the same debate or level of interest that was shown after forward camps were removed.
