However, after you actually complete the quest, the only time a potion will fail, is when the two reagents do not share a common trait.
And for all intensive leveling purposes, same with any trade skill, if you're merely going to the level 50 trade, make the highest level possible product. For alchemy, if you're just trying to level, never use 3 reagents, since you receive no extra IP.
@OhItsReckt I'm fairly a new player in ESO. And have just started leveling up my Alchemy and Enchantment skills, I find it the most difficult to level up not only because it technically is, but it's really quite confusing for me, especially the Alchemy craft. If you can help me understand somethings I would greatly appreciate it: (1) what is the purpose/advantage of having 3 reagent slots (thank you by the way for recommending not using 3 reagents when leveling up), and (2) I also don't understand why some reagents would have rather negatives effects, I can't quite remember what they are, but I don't understand why one would create something that would cause you to "ravage your health" without any positive effect.
It is quite exciting for me though. What I do like about Alchemy and Enchantments is that crafting them is not as linear as the other crafts.
