Alchemy Training with Danello: I made the dumbest mistake.

I gathered all the necessary ingredients. When I went back to the alchemy table, my inventory list informed me the water I already had in my inventory could craft a 10 level potion. This is significantly higher than the 3 level potion the natural water I just gathered would have made. So, I chose to use the water I already had in my inventory (the level 10)... which was apparently not the smartest thing to do, as the attempt failed. I lost both of my reagents, as well... so now I've resorted to scavenging blindly near trees and water to see if I can find reagents that will work for this potion. I'm thinking about abandoning the quest and trying again..

If you're doing the beginning crafting quest, yeah, stick to the level 3 water. Just do exactly as these quest tell you.

However, after you actually complete the quest, the only time a potion will fail, is when the two reagents do not share a common trait.

And for all intensive leveling purposes, same with any trade skill, if you're merely going to the level 50 trade, make the highest level possible product. For alchemy, if you're just trying to level, never use 3 reagents, since you receive no extra IP.

@OhItsReckt I'm fairly a new player in ESO. And have just started leveling up my Alchemy and Enchantment skills, I find it the most difficult to level up not only because it technically is, but it's really quite confusing for me, especially the Alchemy craft. If you can help me understand somethings I would greatly appreciate it: (1) what is the purpose/advantage of having 3 reagent slots (thank you by the way for recommending not using 3 reagents when leveling up), and (2) I also don't understand why some reagents would have rather negatives effects, I can't quite remember what they are, but I don't understand why one would create something that would cause you to "ravage your health" without any positive effect.

It is quite exciting for me though. What I do like about Alchemy and Enchantments is that crafting them is not as linear as the other crafts.

Thanks so much. Makes perfect sense! I don't expect to be doing alchemy a lot as a whole... but I'd like to level it up a little. I appreciate your help!

With three reagents you can make TriPots, potions that have three different effects.
For example, with columbine, mountain flower and bugloss you get a potion that restores mana, stamina and health.

Some will give you wicked bonuses but usually contain a negative effect but with a 3rd ingredients you could remove the negative quality whilst boosting the positive quality.

Hey, no problem. Just glad I can help and everything.

So, first, with three reagents, you can actually make tri effect potions. So, if it is like crunch time on a boss, and you're running out of stamina, or magicka, you could make a potion which gives either/or both of those resources as well as boosting weapon crit, or weapon power/spell crit, or spell power. Same with a tank, if you drop pretty low on HP for whatever reason, why not make a health potion which grants health as well as a boost in armour? It's all about being creative and figuring out what you need at the moment.

Secondly, I also felt your issue with this. I couldn't understand why they would do that myself. All I can offer is that it is a possible 'poison' update for the future of the game? Or perhaps it is there way of balancing out potions to make sure that nothing becomes like a god mode potion. I'm leaning towards a possible poison update in the future.

and (2) I also don't understand why some reagents would have rather negatives effects,

Well, certain TES potions always had negative effects, it was some good game play to make a potion that helped you and hurt you at the same time in the SPG games. Now, there one real reason for making a potion with a negative effects as you can make potions that always help your character.

The only reason now is, you grind the skill up making negative potions, as the regents are cheap or easier to find. Plus your not using up the good stuff learning the skill.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

As far as leveling goes I agree that Enchanting is the hardest to level of all SIX Crafting Skills but Alchemy is like the 2nd easiest. Use whatever Solvent (Water) you have the most of to reveal traits on Reagents and refer to online guides for help in finding out what trait is on what. Also just a heads up: Almost every Reagent has a mirror opposite when it comes to traits. Also for Restorative Potions Columbine is your best friend just to let you know. Another tip: Higher Level Potions give more Inspiration (Crafting Experience term) so upgrade when you can for faster growth.
