Yes, because people are going to start leaving the game when it takes them hours to just try to form a group.

I am amazed this game launched without text chat.

Forgive me if there's one of these buried somewhere.

We consolers simply require this, ZOS. Are you aware that PvP group organizers have devolved their recruitment strategy to repeating, "stand by me for an invite" at objectives? Are you aware that people queue for dungeon groups never intending to communicate with the group AT ALL? The current system is game breaking.
I'm asking all of you to make this poll a clear, overwhelming demand for immediate implementation of text chat. We require this and we WILL NOT get it without concerted action on this forum. Thank you in advance

We already have voice chat? Whats the point of this?

It's such a waste of dev time... Just get on the mic and talk.

Honestly, why would you want text chat? I'm genuinely curious.

Man, I don't know how to respond to you. Even if you didn't didn't read all the rest of my/others arguments for it in the rest of the thread, I give my broadest reasons in the post that you quoted...

I use voice chat only within a group. The area chat is not for me. IMO area voice chat its very chaotic and I usually exit area voice chat within minutes of logging in.

I'm all about having both text and voice chat options to make communication in game more effective. Also, a type pad can attach to the PS4/X1 controllers so typing can be made easier than using the onscreen keyboard. They do also work with a headset so you can use both options simultaneously.

Man, this discussion was going really well a few hours ago.... @NewBlacksmurf who's been one of the most vocal opponents of text chat and several of us who think it's mandatory actually reach common ground and now we have false facts, wild supposition and crazy analogies running rampant... Nice.

Let me give you ideologues an example of why I created this poll. For the last 3 hours on PS4, I've been running around from city to city, crafting station to crafting station trying to find a woodworker who can craft a VR1 lightning staff with precise(my research is 12 days out) for my sorc and have not found a single person. That's not worst of it though; only about 1 in 20 people I asked in area chat even heard me and in-game mail was worse. Here's the kicker: nearly every person I sent a PSN message to answered me, many of them even checking alts in an attempt to help. The community wants to interact; we're being prevented from doing so.

    Wow. Truth.
.... I have to admit, the devs do listen to reason, if not to the forums. Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. THANK YOU for the additions. Very much appreciated.

So this topic has gotten away from the point.

Discussions are around the idea and proposal of a text chat window and/or box within the social menu.
Placed here so there are no sacrifices to the gameplay UI and compatible with many different peripherals or devices.
This concept is to please and compromise those who want text chat and those who don't want text chat.
It's a common ground approach and pages back propose unique ways to manage or handle this proposal

Please let's continue this type of discussion and stop commenting on why "we personally" think, want, need, dislike, don't need and don't want things.
The purpose is not to convince Zenimax or another user why we may want or not want something.
The goal is to have a discussion in efforts to solidify a sound way for such a proposal to work without changing anything else other than what's added within the social tab.

Those other methods have not resulted in additional feedback since we heard why Zenimax scrapped the idea during development while talking on the April ESo Live episode. More commentary was shared again in June during ESo live so what we've learned is there isn't interest in discussion on why or why not but there possibly an opportunity to discuss and solidify a sound approach IF EVER Zenimax were to consider it.

This also allows the community to have positive input so that IF it occurs, the reaction is positive all around as best possible.

What a driving me away from the game is ZOS refusal to communicate with the players and the fact they don't give actual solutions when responding to tickets. Submitted a ticket yesterday because the norm undaunted daily quest bugged and didn't complete after killing the last boss and I get a can response telling me to power cycle my console. It's ridiculous.

    Really dude?

There should be no comprimise. They need to add text chat. It will literally only enhance the gameplay. There is no other way around it. There is no comprimise. It is either add text chat, or watch as the console version become a ghost town.

    That is literally it.

This also happens to be the solution you yourself have come up with. I'm not saying its a bad idea but please dont try and guide the discussion so that we all dance merrily along to your 'compromise'. People are perfectly entitled to their own opinions.

    @NewBlacksmurf

sorta a repost but added some stuff so we can get back on track ;)

have all text chat options in the socal window

    text chat on/off
    channel tabs on/off
*new* text imput device - allows the player to select default the imput for text chat to controler, keyboard, smartglass, PS4 app, etc..
    font size
font color even? guild one color, trade an other etc....

text chat window would be like on the the PC fades after 20-30secs of inactivity

activating text chat would either be by pressing "enter" on a keyboard or by pressing square on PS4 or X on Xbox One while in the quick chat/emote wheel window

    11823047_468836043289812_9148386014275414171_o.jpg
So in this window for the PS4 it would say use square for text chat which would pop up the virtual keyboard or allow imput from smartglass or PS4 text app for text chat from non keyboard using players.

linking items in chat via square on PS4 or X on Xbox One on item hilighted in your inventory, this would also open up text chat as well

    11246590_468836669956416_694858531049138910_o.jpg
Just add square link item in chat at the bottom along with the other options there.

I just want to repeat that IF you use a keyboard text chat would basicly act the same way on the console as it does with PC, but these options would give non-keyboard users a more streamlined access to text chat. Again this is ONLY a suggestion I'm not demanding they do it this way or anything.

I hate the voice chat system. It looks really good on paper when people tell you about having to talk to other people in town or whatever but the first thing I heard when I made it to a big city was a bunch of people chewing and breathing into their mics lol. There is no push to talk option so you have to hear everyone's tv blaring in the backround or their mom yelling at them etc. People try and sell things by repeating things into their mics over and over and its almost impossible to find a pug for dungeons. Even worse is being automatically put into these channels every time I log in.

Adding a transparent chat box that can be toggled doesn't take anything away from the game and will make it much easier to communicate to other players, and will save my precious eardrums from screaming children. It would be even better if said chatbox could sync with the ps4 app so I could easily use my phone to type messages.

Don't compromise , if you want a text chat option with standard chat say so.

The discussion is whether Text Chat should be in the IC Patch for Console. It is not about your 'compromise'. And considering this a forum where people post their personal opinions. Theyre free to do that. So maybe you should stop trying to steer the conversation away from what the topic is about. Maybe you should take your 'compromise' to its own thread and see if it takes off instead of trying to hijack this one.

Advice to everyone. There's two posters in this and every thread about text, character names, and remapping of controls , essentially anything console related , who think Zenimax can do no wrong , who think they speak for all console players , and who think they know better. They go back and forth attempting to "compromise" and then to troll.

Just remember they are two regular accounts , who basically try and act important or as if they matter more. One tries to act like some insider know it all , the other trolls attempting to get people to argue more.

Both are jokes. Simply ignore them , don't let them bait you into arguing too much , as its what they want. And I'm not "naming them" because heaven forbid they get called out. But I think it's easy enough to figure out which one is the know it all fake insider who tells others what to talk about , and the other one a contradictory troll.

Might as well just not give them any attention.

Who the hell made you the decider of what we want or what we should talk about? I've read several of your posts and you seem to come off as someone who thinks you know more than others , speak for console players , and are some sort of important poster. I'm new and can see you are full of it. I want standard text chat window that can be fully optional for those who don't want to use it. As I have had in EVERY OTHER CONSOLES MMO I have played. Are you that delusional that you think you have some authority to tell others what they should or should not think or post about ? You are one poster that matters no more than any other. Get over yourself.

You will come to realize that NBS has delusions of grandeur. He has been called all many times by console players to quit acting like he is their representative.

    Text chat is not coming.

Not in the archaic form of text clutter you demand.

The rest of the community has taken the hint and moved on.

Compromise for the sake of the community is fundamental.

How dare any one person try to crush all other forms of discussion?

NBS actually suggested a really cool idea.

I for one could support his suggestion.

Standard text chat would create more HUD clutter and serve a mostly redundant purpose.

I think NBS has actually used the momentum of the discussion and channeled it into a positive solution that will keep casuals from running for the hills and help bring area communications to the hard cores.

    Cheers buddy.

So if anyone suggests anything other than a particular brand of dogma, they must be trolling?

A discussion can only work with many sides.

Its an exchange of many different ideas.

I think a few people in this thread have. A hard time understanding that other people will have other ideas. I have stated before I am against the HUD clutter and spam of text chat but not exactly text chat.

Its laughable that a few posters can't grasp a stance on an opinion born out of various notions.

I have also suggested an alternate solution in a second screen experience as a way to incorporate text chat without overwhelming beginners with rolling troll text arguments and racist rants etc.

Many new people won't know how to toggle or ignore.

They will just be getting blasted with both barrels of internet uhmm. Stuff.

    Plus public service announcement.
The options menu has a seperate volume slider called. Player volume.

Turning this down reduces or perma mutes area chat.

I hope we can refocus on the forum topic and move on.

I don't take any of these barbs personally.

I only want the same thing you do, to discuss the game we both love.

    Cheers.

Did you read my take on that idea, dude? The reason I decided to discuss a compromise is that ZOS seems to be dead set against giving us a standard chat box; it might be worth our while to give them suggestions that will give us what we need and allow them to keep their HUD simplicity doctrine or whatever.
Communications from your chosen channels would pop up on your HUD much like loot does now but linger there for 15 to 30 seconds. To respond you click a controller or phone/keyboard shortcut taking you to a social menu tab that's functionally the same as the PC on-screen box. Everyone has agreed that text chat wouldn't be for mid-combat communication so on screen messages functioning like loot pop ups and a quick way to get to the tab would cost us nothing and might miraculously cause ZOS to stop looking at this as incompatible with their vision for the game.

I'd take it gratefully, but I'd far prefer togglable notifications on the HUD so I could keep playing while I wait for someone to respond to my LFG post. In game mail tells us how little attention some players pay to things exclusive to the menus. Haha

I don't want a compromise option. I want standard text chat. As all other CONSOLE mmorpg's I've played have had. The two others have referred to do not speak for anyone but themselves as others have pointed out. I'm not sure what makes them think their opinion is any better or more important either than everyone else's opinions and posts. I do not have to accept that text chat is not coming and do not have to accept that I have to be thankful for someone's idea of a compromise. The compromise should be text chat implemented with the option to ignore it and have it hidden if it you don't want to use it. Seems quite fair to me.

I get most of my resolve from being correct.

I support a healthy debate regarding a second screen solution for text chat on console.

I am not anti text chat just anti HUD clutter.

I hope you have a great night.

This thread isn't about a "second screen solution".
It is about "Text Chat in the IC Patch".

Agreed ,it's laughable the way some delusional people think they have the power to change the topic being discussed. They can discuss same ridiculous thing they want all they want , just quit implying they speak for anyone other than themselves.
Anyone who thinks they are correct because they judge it themselves to be so is really , really sad. I guess the two or three constitute the "Community". I see vast numbers more that disagree with the two delusional buddies in this thread.
