Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

Yes

Even though I have a Mic I would still like the option to type text. Not only is this more convenient for me when my son is sleeping in the same room as me, but it also gives those who are deaf the ability to communicate without relying on in-game mail system that doesn't work or sending messages over Xbox Live or PSN.

Its a much needed add-on, and the community wants it.

Im 100% for OPTIONAL text chat. Theres alot of valid reasons to why it should be added as many posters stated.

You dont like it? You should be able to hide it so it doesnt hinder your experience. Simple. Concerned it would split the player base? It already has. I know plenty of people that turn off voice chat the moment they log in (I love voice chat)

I cant take anyone serious who is against options.

The idea of all these controller players destroying the English language by overly abbreviating and distorting words into mishmash garbage... and even worse with no UI control the sudden inability to turn this option off... I feel like at some point in the games history they tried text chat and their attempts showed such.

The controller is just a really bad text input device, it would take like a minute or more for each complete sentence you type.

Our group uses the PSN app on our phones while we play, we have a chat room party on PSN that we all can send to, that way we can coordinate, though that isn't a good way of meeting new people. Still in Cyrodiil we do pretty well with only voice chat, we scoop up plenty of randoms and can then talk to them in Group chat.

I think those who are wanting text chat haven't thought it through and if they saw what text integration with a controller as the text input method really looked like... they would also vote no (like I did).

Global Voice channels are a thought, or some kind of LFG lobby where you can post groups or something, some way to connect players together. Even then though most of the time when I connect to random people in games like this many of them are really really bad, I still feel like being in a good guild is the best way to find a group where all four parties are pulling their weight.

Also it's not all about lfg and party combat chat. Many people for many years have and still do enjoy just socially chatting in zone wide chat with others in an mmo. On both PC and console.

Lastly I knew a certain poster couldn't stay away. He's said he's done with this and the other chat threads multiple times.

Many have begun to call him out and prove he's not the speaker for the silent majority , he just can't stand it.

Playing devil's advocate here: First, I voted no primarily because it shouldn't be part of IC -- it should be a separate patch for consoles when and if it's ready, completely independent of IC. (I *seriously* doubt it would be ready by the end of August, anyway, unless they'd been working on it for months, now -- it's a far from trivial addition...)

Now, I'm fine with the idea of text chat being added, but you have to understand the major flaws with it on a console. The vast majority of console owners don't have keyboards attached to their consoles, and chatting with a controller is ridiculously slow and ungainly. It can be done, though, but I strongly suspect if most console owners don't have a keyboard, most will opt NOT to use the text chat feature even if implemented.

What happens then if they group with someone who is using text chat exclusively? They're trying to communicate with voice, but the text chatter is only using text. Grouping in that case becomes just as awkward, if not more so. The person using text chat is likely to be ignored by the rest of the group, too - because the text, by default, is usually not very noticeable. Playing on PC, I almost never notice text chat messages, or even whispers, because the default chat settings have the window small and out of the way. It shows maybe 15 lines of text, which typically ends up being 3 or 4 messages because people like spamming multi-line messages. Not very useful with those default settings. But if you're only doing voice chat on consoles, why would you bother to fix that? (In fact, since I believe in options, I'd say the chat window ought to be one - and expect most people without a keyboard to turn it off.)

Further, you'd probably need to have additional options in group finders to filter your choices to people using Text Chat or Voice Chat only so any group formed would be using the same chat mechanism.

So yes, I think it should be an option (and voice chat should, conversely, be added to the PC/Mac side as an option…), but it's got non-trivial things to resolve, and it probably won't be the big solution you're expecting -- it just trades one set of problems for another. Be careful what you wish for.

One addition to my above comments - I could see text chat becoming *really* useful on consoles if it included text-to-speech and speech-to-text translation. Then voice chat would be automatically transcribed into the text window, and text chat would be automatically spoken (obviously, with filters for different channels…). That would solve almost all the issues I described nicely.

But that's kind of pie in the sky wishful thinking -- REALLY unlikely to actually happen.

Actually this poll and many other topics and comments have shown that the majority of the player base wants text chat.

The people that have voted all payed and play the game and voted for something they want to enhance their gameplay experience. And the majority of them voted yes to text chat and a very small minority voted no. And now because your side lost in a landslide you are trying to say those people who voted yes do not count. Lol your logic and argument makes no sense and holds no value.

LOL that's rediculous. Text chat has been part of every decent mmo on consoles. Dcuo ff14, crap even everquest. It worked PERFECTLY on all those games. So why all of a sudden would textend chat not work on another mmo? We even see how well it works on the PC version of the same exact game. Your arguments make no sense. Zero.

Because on PC you have a keyboard not a text entry window that is literally 20 times slower than actual typing on a real keyboard? It would be awful, and ZOS have already tested it internally and saw it was awful thus they opted not to include it in the game.

Also to Eriquito3, your rudeness does not change the fact that NewBlacksmurf is right. The forum population is maybe 3% of the actual games population, thus the margin for error on a forum poll, a poll where people are more likely to click on it to begin with if they agree with the subject line, would just be impossible to calculate.

I play in the largest PVP guild on PS4 and we have an incredibly robust voice chat rule set and I never hear anyone complain about a lack of text chat. We all just use the PSN app on our phones to send direct messages outside of voice chat.

A poll on the general forums is not a scientific process - I give you ZOS' choosing not to respond to the text chat topic as proof that they already tried it, didn't like it, and will not be adding it.

It is YOU who are the vocal minority, and the general forums is where the vocal minority hang out and think themselves as advocates for the general population.

The only vocal minority here are the ones who oppose text chat. Zenimax themselves couldn't agree on it with them publicly posting that it would have text chat in April then retracting it.

I guarantee you there's a few devs internally who think it's stupid idea to not have text chat also.

It IS a Console MMO...after all

The definition of MMO or MMORPG does not include a specific type of communication.
You and so many others are applying your preferences into a genre and have concluded that your opinions and preferences are a definition.

Trust me, there are people that are for text chat and there are those who aren't for it. Regardless of any poll or suvey, what you will find is that people who play on consoles, do so as they favor certain things on console over a PC.
Those things may differ by person but are as of little importance.

The developer gets to test, build and decide upon how their game will look and play on each platform based on what makes sense to them and what aligns in their business development plans. We all have opinions but no one from Zenimax has asked any of us what we think about this topic.

They've chosen not to respond and/or participate after their last address in June during ESO Live.
No one seems to gather this and those who do are overshadowed by others who seem to want to argue and call people names or label others as trolls instead of discussing and coming up with ideas that have not been previously shot down.

They've got nothing to backup their logic or ideas , there's plenty of reviews that call out no text chat as detrimental to socialization in the game , every other major mmorpg on the console has text chat , and not one poll can be produced with anything but overwhelming votes to have it as an option.

I'll try to follow my own advice also , let's just ignore the two or three trolls who keep coming back and trying to bait and who mean nothing.

Wow I didn't even know this was still an argument. Lmao. Kinda thought it was no-brainer by now. Seriously. I'm in 4 active guilds and can only communicate with 1 at a time. That is super effective let me tell you. Cant find a group that actually even knows what is going on. Most of the time I'm trying to 2 man a dungeon because the whole group doesn't even show up. Cant sell anything. I'm sitting on a ridiculous amount of mats that I'm certainly not gonna use all of. Could be nice to sell some. If anyone interested isn't within a hundred feet of me though,.. well not gonna happen. Seriously.. all of you arguing agains it, go troll somewhere else. Maybe on some whiny trial nerf threads or something.

If ever you find that your opinion about change is more important than playing the game then there is a problem.
You would be best to figure out how to work around or move on from whatever the issues are that cause you to feel those changes are necessary.

I left this game on PC because I found myself in a situation where certain changes that I wanted were outside of what the companies desires were on PC. I later found that on console, there was greater alignment...and my desires for XYZ changes for the most part were gone or already addressed to be changed "later".

Here I am...where are you now and where are you going?

Yeah, Its "baiting" the very few vocal posters opposed to having options (Yes it sounds ridiculous) could have easily voted, left a comment explaining why it wasnt a good idea for the game, and moved on. They know there isnt much support on their side of the argument so they feel the need to constantly shoot down any hopes the majority of the playerbase has for text chat. Theres no arguing "options" its silly. Cant pay em any mind because these posters are going to try to get the thread closed

Just the notion that having options is a terrible idea alone shows how unreasonable these posters are. You cant reason with them, they have an agenda. Theres no argument that can be made against having the OPTION to hide a chat window.

What this poll and other forum polls do represent is from start date to current date, the number of forums participants who are interested enough during the time they are using the forums to vote one way or another.

Thats it....its something to discuss but nothing to draw financial decisions on or to determine how to spend development time.

Every opinion that I have heard from friends and family is just shocked this isn't in game already

As a guild leader and someone who plays nearly every day on xbox and did on pc till console launch I can tell you for a fact this was a terrible idea for consoles considering eso is the best deepest mmo on console and not having the chat box is causing eso alot of damage trust me this current system is a disaster compared to how the game plays on pc coz of the good old chat box.

Please add it ZOS.

The poll only represents those who participate in the forums who have in recent days, seen and choose to submit a choice on this topic.

This poll DOES NOT and SHOULD NOT be taken to assume the feedback and voices of actual, current, perspective or prior customers who may or may not have played the game on PS4 and Xbox One.

I just need to make sure we all understand that the poll results and comments do not represent the majority of any customer base nor do they provide enough feedback for decisions that will impact all customers regardless of preference.

The polls in the forums are for discussion purposes...idea generation and building upon or gathering information and perspective of a few and or some by thread and topic.

Actually this poll and many other topics and comments have shown that the majority of the player base wants text chat.

The people that have voted all payed and play the game and voted for something they want to enhance their gameplay experience. And the majority of them voted yes to text chat and a very small minority voted no. And now because your side lost in a landslide you are trying to say those people who voted yes do not count. Lol your logic and argument makes no sense and holds no value.

No I ask you to please stop trolling these posts. You bring nothing positive to the table.

On the contrary, smurf has suggested possible work arounds that might appease the niche group that actually needs text chat.

The people playing on console have primarily grasped the use of guild chat to enact some stunning PvP tactics or group making.

I feel its a good time to mention that all posters are welcome to discuss the topic, regardless of varying opinion.

I have also suggested alternatives for a console text chat hybrid solution.

No one is opposed to options.

Adding text chat will cost development time better spent elsewhere.

Most casual players aren't going to bother with a keyboard. Not when mics work better and faster.
What's the point of adding a world wide chat text when most of the players will have it toggled off?
