I hear rumors of it coming soon, along with fixes to camp hunter exploits. All just rumors though. The whispers in the wind also mention that it will be with the new patch in about a month and some change

Why would there ever be? It would be incredibly inconvenient to use in a game like this. Cheap headsets are cheap and talking makes more sense than dropping everything to type out a response.

They heard it from a friend of a friend who knows someone who is a friend of someone that works at a game store part time after school.

Honestly, looking at the UI on the console, I seriously doubt that there will ever be text chat. A think that an increasing number of players are simply adapting, and by doing so, making voice chat work.

Probably. But don't hold your breath. The PC version has been out for over a year and still doesn't have controller support.

I like the built-in voice chat on the consoles too. But text would still be very useful for zone chat and some guild chat. Right now, very few guildees seem to be using voice chat outside of group, and so communicating with them is virtually impossible without a third party website. And there is no option for any sort of zone communication. If you're in a zone and looking to group for a group dungeon, you basically have two options:

    1) Put yourself at the mercy of a completely broken group-finder "tool," or
    2) Stand around at the entrance hoping someone else has their area chat on and can hear you as you solicit them for a run.

So you're going to run up to all 500 people in a zone and ask them 1 by 1 in prox chat if they want to kill this boss, do this dungeon etc? I'm pretty sure typing 3 sentences in 20 seconds on my keyboard is faster than random voice chat with people who don't even have a mic plugged in...

I heard a rumor that it will definitely never be implemented.

I have no idea if this is true. It's just something I heard on the in game voice chat while playing & communicating simultaneously.

Nope, just switch to voice guild chat and ask all 120 people in my guild at the same time.

You know this is impossible right? Each guild voice chat has a channel for every 25 or so people on it so you have to switch channels & ask in each one ... wait for a response etc & then move on to the next channel, for each guild you are in.

    So what's easier?

Typing out "/1guild can anyone help me with X boss?"

or channel surfing in voice chat?

People today are so use to texting that they forgot how to actually talk. I for one hope it NEVER gets put in. My guild dose fine with voice chat only. While in dungeons fighting is a lot easier talking to my group instead of messing with kb.

I'm pretty sure like 99.9% of the people asking for text chat want it in addition to voice chat not instead of.

Voice chat is great for dungeons & raids ... text chat is better for just about everything else.

    Comprise idea:

Instead of adding a text chat box (this I'm not in favor of and from the comments it seems that "text chat" is assumed as such by those who want the feature)....

can we all agree on adding text chat bubble and a text chat box within the social menu?

-I'm also not for a text zone chat but could fully support text chat bubbles (with item linking)

    Another idea is:
    On console only:
Open up text chat (not in a text box on the normal UI screen while playing but within a social menu)
-this would function, look and work just like the PC version of text chat with one exception. It's in the social menu

    Please comment, etc.
trying to compromise my opinions and hopefully at least get you all for text chat another official response from ZOs

We do it every night by coordinating in officer's chat.

When you group on pc you have to log in to teamspeak for the group you join.
On console you select and push a button.
    So which is easier?

Finally to hear some compromise from you is actually refreshing. I mean I never understood the anti text crowd and their obstinate behavior, even in light of how many people are being shut out, turned off, or ignored. Never was it asked by pro text for voice to be removed but instead used in conjunction to further the game. I would be totally down for this method of having a chat box in my game. Again so long as it would be zone wide chat and everyone can see it to make grouping easier until they fix the damn thing. Plus once we get into the small group we are using voice chat. Brilliant idea and all for this, it keeps the screen clean, allows those with disabilities to partake in the game, and makes everyone happy. Not sure if they would add the linking thing, would be nice, but hell I would settle for a zone wide text chat box in the social menu and would cry tears of joy.

Also, thinking about the text chat bubble, honestly not so much. I mean the proximity voice can work well enough for close chatting and if people want to see who is calling for a group in text they would go for the social menu text box. I mean I would hate people running around with a text box looking like this [stupid----->]. Mostly because it would probably be aimed at me ;p. Bubbles no, social text box zone wide yes yes yes and oh hell yes.

New PlayStation 4 player here. I want text chat to be able to talk to people far away from me like I did in Final Fantasy 11 and 14. I am shocked it is not here. Makes it feel like a non mmorpg to me.

Well I don't want text because, like I've already said, when I walk into a town and no one is talking, the town feels dead. Sometimes the area chat is annoying, and I never talk in area chat in these towns because I just PvP and have no use for anyone in these towns, but it makes the towns feel alive.

I don't know what guilds you're in, but with all the ones I've ever been in so far on PS4 (even the big ones), only a few people from the guild are on the channel at any given time.

Interesting, you don't use the voice chat, but prefer it stays and do not give the option to those who would prefer to chat via text any option. Granted those could be various reasons, personality issues, disabilities, speach impediments, etc. So even if something wasn't on your screen affecting YOUR gameplay, you wouldn't want it added so that others can enjoy the game you enjoy as much. Even though you only pvp and don't use voice chat.....Again I still don't understand those against adding text, and how they are so obstinate and one sided thinking only of themselves instead of others. Besides when I walk into town, I hear inane garbled chit chat, loud music, dogs barking, rude comments, game feedback, babies crying, a wife asking her mate to drive her to work and get off the damn game, etc etc etc. Hardly the immersive feeling i would like to feel when going into a medieval based town. Which is why I shut it off because of the people who use it to pollute the airwaves with usless crap, most do not for this very reason. By making this the only form of communication, they have effectively shut out many players and diminished their game. An mmo needs as many social aspects brought in as possible. Take a page from Blacksmurf, albeit the last pages ;p, and learn to compromise, the game isn't just about YOUR experience it is the experiences of YOURS and OTHERS that make and mmo thrive.
