Should the ESO Forums Include an Off-Topic Forum?

Allow me to explain,

A lot of other games have an off-topic section, but amazingly, ESO does not.

I once, when I was just starting out on these forums, posted a thread titled "Best Prank You've Ever Done". It sadly had to get closed down because it was not related to ESO.

However, if there was an Off-Topic section, then maybe we can post threads like that. And maybe we can make more connections to other players than can be made just by discussing ESO.

Now, before you say "Uh, how will Code of Conduct be enforced?", don't worry. The Code of Conduct will be enforced, in fact, it will be more strictly enforced in the Off Topic section.

So, in your opinion, should the ESO forums include an Off Topic forum?

Yes, I want an off topic section of the forums. I have several good topics that I want to discuss that can't be discussed on here just yet.

Sure, so long as its properly moderated.
Bethesda has a Community Discussion forum on its site that usually stays fairly civilised.
I guess being a fairly new game with its share of controversy ZOS felt adding an off-topic forum would be stretching its moderators too much.

Ok, judging by the results 2 hours into the poll, I assume there is 2 crowds...yes or no, and they are almost equal. So, really, we'll need to get ZOS' opinion on this.

I think the amount of moderation required for this is why they never put it in the forums to start.

Even though I am not against it.

Depends on what you mean by "off topic". Sometimes some of the topics can be a little off, but still offer something.

What we really need is a totally separate forum for PC vs. console. Obviously they do not function in any way similarly and it gets confusing.

What would be the context for your forum idea? Would it be something directed at ZOS itself? If not, isn't that pretty much what we already have here?

I would imagine anything unrelated to the game.

being a chatty person that likes to browse forums, I'd love to have another forum to read on these boards.

No, what we have here in Gen Discussion is (new awesome idea) wedged between "nerf sorc" and "don't buy IC". Maybe someone has some feedback they'd like to leave and takes one look at the front page and runs for the hills.

So yes, I'd like to see a neat/tidy place that devs/anyone @ZOS could browse through ideas and feedback players have about the game. PC has the option to do so in game ( /feedback), I can't even get an answer if console has that option, or where to direct* people trying to do so...that's not buried under 50 other random things.

With what currently happens in the world (refugees, war crimes, financial disasters...) the off topic would pretty much turn into a political debate between the various supporters of their nations.

Yes there should be, let the players of ESO discuss topics non-ESO topics. Nothing wrong with that.

No, they don't add anything positive to a forum but often add more negativity. There are plenty of general forums for those who want to discuss off-topic issues, there's no reason why such issues need to be posted here. They're also a massive drain on moderators' time, wholly disproportionate to any perceived benefit if indeed there is any.

There is already a staggering population of trolls on ESO. Adding a section with no real purpose would become a new breeding ground for them.

Hi, guys, I'm the OP. Obviously no one read the description before selecting an option in the poll, so I need to clarify some things.

Off Topic forums are not vastly popular. Even when RIFT had a huge population, is was a rare day when the Off-Topic forums had more than 1 post/new thread a day. Because of that, trolls are more likely going to target General Discussion.

Also, to clarify, although Off Topic does mean we can discuss stuff non-related to ESOTU, it does not mean we can make trolling posts. In fact, Trion moderates the Off Topic forums a little more closely than they do the General Discussion. So, yes, we will still have to follow Code of Conduct (so, to ease your concern @Audigy , there cannot be any discussion of real life politics or real life religion, as mentioned in Code of Conduct. In fact, almost every forum has banned discussion of real life politics or real life religion, and those have not will have to follow suit or get shunned from the Internet).

Hopefully this clarifies some things. I'm not trying to change any votes, but yes, Code of Conduct still has to be followed, so no, trolls will still get punished.

    Hope I helped.

    Signed,

Yeah sure why not? I see the forums as a way to help build something of a community. If I see one major downside it's that if mods moved all posts/topics that were off-topic most sub-forums would be abandoned. :-P

A "staggering population of trolls"? You are kidding, right? Compared to most forums (I'm looking at you FAQ), trolling is mild at best.

Of course, it also depends no what you mean by trolling. Some people think it's trolling to simply disagree with them.
