I play ESO on XB1, and needless to say, I think choosing a name in ESO for a character is pointless, for the fact that you never see a player's name on console, only gamer tags. Not sure about PC, but name change is virtually pointless on console.

Not quite how that works. People on your XBL friends list appear as their gamertag, but everyone else appears as their character name. Pretty sure this is for privacy reasons, so that every Tom, ***, and Harry isn't spamming you with friend requests and messages.

Actually, not quite how that works.

On Xbox One, you only ever see another player with their GT underneath their health bars. Trade with them, it's their GT. Invite them to a group and join group chat, you see their GT. Further, there is no "privacy" when all you have to do is place your target reticle over another player, open up the radial menu and select "View Gamer Profile". The only time you ever see a player's character name is when they craft something for you. At the bottom of the item's description you'll find "Created by: Character Name".

Not sure what version you're playing, but character names are practically non-existent. So, with that said, there is/was no reason for me or anyone else to spend X amount of time picking a name when all you ever see is a GT (not including quest dialogue).

That's not what this says: https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2561/kw/Name

Now, unless you're saying that people have some REALLY stupid and random gamer tags, I'm inclined to trust the official support on this.

Name change would benefit PC users. I'd like the option.
Falls-With-Grace ~ Shadowscale (Argonian Night Blade)
Selique Lasra ~ Captain, Smuggler, Swashbuckler (Redguard Templar)
Chases-Comets ~ Shellback Warrior (Argonian Dragon Knight)
Slissix-Kir ~ Swamp Shaman (Argonian Sorcerer)
    Hail Sithis..

I would certainly spend some crowns on making the characte names of some alts of mine more lore-conforming...

This is a fairly common feature among other MMO's. I think I heard awhile back that this was going to be an option in the crown store.

Oh, you again. Ok, since you can't seem to rely on your own facts over an FAQ that is somewhat unclear and doesn't do a very good job on differentiating between PC and Console, lets break this down:
The UserID, the gamertag, and the PSN ID are the unique name of the player's account (no two users can have the same UserID, gamertag or PSN ID). It is also a publicly displayed name that will be visible in-game by friends and guild mates.

Yep, this is 100% true. What they don't tell you, is that it doesn't apply to just "friends" and "guild mates", but everyone in-game. Go to a Guild Trader in Mournhold. Look up a random item. Do you honestly think every name you see listed under every item with zX360zN0s0pez420Xz is their character name? Still don't believe me? Find a random player in game and note the name that shows up under their health bar. Now view their gamer card from the radial menu. Note it's the same! I just had a guild member confirm this.
The character name is the name that is proper to individual characters. It is the one that is displayed on the public chat channels. Players who don't know each other well enough will have to use the character names to /whisper each other.

This portion only applies to PC players. We don't have a way to /whisper anyone nor do consoles have text chat functionality.

    ===================

But there's no way an FAQ could be lacking in info, dated or only half true, right?

Would rather see character names above heads with a toggle for player name or gamer tag

Then they could make money for name changes
“There is no pain greater than this; not the cut of a jagged-edged dagger nor the fire of a dragon’s breath. Nothing burns in your heart like the emptiness of losing something, someone, before you truly have learned of its value. Often now I lift my cup in a futile toast, an apology to ears that cannot hear.”
