So I just reinstated my subscription today after having canceled it previously (I was a beta tester and had subbed since launch), and I decided to start a thread so the Devs know what tipped the scales on both decisions. This is not a rant, nor a rave, but a bit of both. The goal is to list out factors on both decisions so ZOS can see how their decisions impact at least one subscriber when taken as a whole, so they can hopefully do more of the "good" and less of the "bad."
Why I Unsubbed
- The straw that broke the camel's back was when ZOS did not allow me to transfer my characters to console; I had been AFK for several months and missed any news on the subject and did not see any email. When I came back, it was a week or two after deadline and they would not budge. The main reason I wanted to be able to play on console? So I can use a controller. I still think having a cutoff went against what they told subscribers originally, and that the entire situation was poorly handled, but hopefully they learned from the fiasco.
- The nerf to night's silence and dark stalker stacking (higher mobility is fun, and the nerf wasn't needed)
- The nerf to bolt escape (I play nightblade mostly, but it's a cool ability and it would be better for other classes to have similar abilities as a counter rather than nerfing a cool ability and decreasing mobility)
- The fact that the game locks abilities behind classes; it would be fine if any single character can ultimately get access to all classes and / or the same / equivalent abilities, but without that, the game can be pretty unbalanced and frustrating at times; it is also contrary to the spirit of "play how you want" and the original ES games (in prior games, it was possible to max out all stats and abilities on a single character).
- Total lack of information on Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Spellcrafting.
- Requiring groups for Craglorn content.
- Public delvs (better if there was a solo /group option upon entering).
- Nerf to ultimate generation.
- Inability to group with other factions.
- Failure to remove Veteran Ranks after multiple promises to do so.
Why I Resubbed
- Great game, I like the combat, questing, world, stories, crafting, champion system (although it needs a catch-up mechanism), etc., etc.
- They announced controller support for PC (which was one of two conditions I said I would renew under).
- They're still planning to remove Veteran Ranks.
- New info for Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, or, at least we know they're coming (@ZOS_GinaBruno: Any new news on Spellcrafting? Is it still in the works? What about Jewelcrafting?).
- They're going to make it possible to group with other factions, at least for dungeons to begin with.
- Imperial City looks fun.
- Orsimar is on it's way and will, hopefully, be soloable.
- Prismatic enchantments (I like hybrids).
- New content will be released quarterly, so we should have a lot to look forward to.
- Overall, I think ZOS is doing a good job, and the Devs care about the game and the players; even if they get it wrong sometimes.
So, pat on the back for the Devs for the recent announcements, looking forward to playing with a controller (hopefully soon), and seeing where the game goes.
I'll also be updating my thread on class balance once I've gotten one of each class up to max VR, although I still think opening up additional classes after a given number of champion points is the way to go there.
