Is text chat the issue or instead the issue that you may be lacking a guild or circle of friends readily available for encounters.
As we all play as we play there are many different ways to address this.
Text chat is just a means of communication. Text chat is available just not as a text box on the game screen.
Posting on the forums or posting on an Xbox activity feed using a smart phone or whatever offers this.
When on PC if I'm doing something and don't wan to be bothered I turn off general chats and sometimes all text chat.
On console now I turn off all voice chat and don't look at my feed on smartglass via Xbox app.
There's the grouping tools too that don't seem to be at the level of functionality and have the options many desire but text chat....it's just a form of communication.
On PC there is no native voice chat. The same argument could be made in reverse.
Think outside of the norm and don't limit yourself. There are more options to communicate widely on console than PC based on how Sony and Xbox's communities and social options are built.
Different but more
Ah, I see you've declined to elaborate upon your previous statement regarding how the addition of text-based chat would adversely effect the game for those who opt to turn text chat off yet again.
On PC, there will be native voice chat. This has been talked about a few times in the past, as well as native PC controller support.
So no, the same argument actually can not be made in reverse, because in the end PC will have access to controller, VOIP, text, keyboard, etc. Console will only have access to controller and VOIP.
This is why I've continually called it an inferior product for the same box price, which is simply unfair considering that it was a design decision and not an actual technical limitation that caused text-based chat to be removed from console versions.
It's in other responses. Not avoiding you but it didn't think it was logical to re type it
But in short.....ADDING a new form of communication after game ESRB ratings and info is placed on the box is one MAJOR change that happens.
Another is player interactions and the speed of play.
Text chat takes A LOT longer to type and read/respond compared to voice chat. My first observation in console BETa was while running around I met, grouped and played all at once. Quests, dungeons and trying to explain things was always done while playing. New dungeons took less of the time to play even explaining to brand new players.
Text chat as experienced on PC in closed BETa to launch took an average of 1-2 hours per reg dungeon. Console took 15-30 mins.
ADDIng in text boxes does also require reworking of the UI. You can't just simply throw a box up. It has to work and work with options and settings. It has to have me us but also be seen in menus and NPC infractions, it can't hide voice chat pop-ups or the enlarged UI for console. It wouldn't really work in the bottom right or left and the top right and left obstruct play viewing or grouping UI.
The time it takes to rework all of that is better spent on content IMO
AND...the next part of your comments...to me continues to cause me to ask over and over again.
iF all the features and functionalities are being added to PC why not just play on PC. It's literally being added to offer a customized experience.
Console games never offer a fully customized experience and for logical reason.
To me the thread just justifies a reason for many to go back to PC if that's the forms of communication you desire.
And by many comments here their definition of a MMO is what the PC version offers.
It is what it is...and it's working just fine on console as well as the options for PC.
Pick your platform based on how you want to play and go with what's offered.
Simple...

Meaning NO ESO at all.
(And I will pull one of your great tactics and tell you to "look for the information about numbers yourself, I am not doing your work for you.".)
Is this your goal?
Do you actually want ESO to stop?
Because adding OPTIONS is how you keep players happy, keep games/servers open, and keep companies running.

Please cite a factual article where the absense of text chat is causing poor sales for TESO. It seems to only be those who support this thread here and on Reddit only
At launch there were approx 1.6 million on Xbox and approx 2.2 mil on PS4.
In 2014 there were at most approx 700k on PC.
It seems the a sense of text chat is causing the game NOT to fail.
If I'm missing something please identify it.
There are far more on consoles than PC. Each console independently has more players than PC right now.
Numbers will fall for sure as initial interest is always high but fail...even the Teitch viewers today and the prior ESO Live episodes were far above what Twitch ESO live viewers were in 2014.
The sky isn't falling...at least based on sales for console.
If the game fails it will not be because of a different form of communication differing by platform.
IF it fails it'll be due to lack of content and due to a snowball of misleading or innacurate statements are future developments by Zenimax.

That is what voice chat is for. I'm sorry if this comes off bad, but one thing people have constantly repeated ad nausium is that no one wants to get rid of voice chat. Does this need to be said differently? Is there something you don't comprehend about "no one wants to get rid of voice chat" or "we want both?" It has its purposes, and what you describe here is one of them. And no one is debating that.
Again, sorry of this is mean sounding, but this argument keeps being made, and it really doesn't seem to make sence unless you don't understand those two phrases.

Actually if you follow this thread there are many who are asking for text chat in order to not have to use voice chat.
The belief that adding a feature that allows different groups to opt in and out of forms of communication will have a huge outcome on the game in a negative manner as it splits people. This was explained by Zenimax and was one of the reasons why text chat was scrapped during development.
It doesn't need to be said to me differently but perhaps your understanding of how human behavior and options work are causing you to not follow my comments.... or maybe just that I need to say this to you again differently. (Not meant to be rude, sorry if it comes off short)
The server population is split by three factions and within those three, normal, silver and gold questing zones.
Here is the result of adding text chat:
There are ppl that don't mind voice chat
There are those who do mind voice chat
There are those who don't like text chat
There are those who do like text chat
There are those who don't want to communicate at all
There are those who will swap between one or the other
^Depending on the category you fall in, the player that you're interacting with will fall into one of these as well. Everyone will not fall into the same nor will it be a 50/50 so you end up splitting the community which is bad.
Here is what we have today:
those who chat and those who don't.
Those who party chat
Those who in-game chat, group, guild
It's already split so to add more options results in dividing your player base even more.
From Zenimax's point of view...this isn't the direction they want to go.
My opinion...it would be idiotic especially considering the option exists on another platform that has existed a year prior.
My opinions and argument may not make sense to ou but the logic behind your question and my answer is above.
Simply put, the goal of this game is to bring as many people together on one server as possible with one form of communication. The game design has a splitting or separating nature so to further split the population is not a good idea.
Communication is one of the most influential things about humans. Adding text chat isn't simply just putting a box in.
What languages will be needed vs the few that will complain their language is left out and how does the language get converted from one console to another?
Its not a PC
NewBlacksmurf wrote: »But in short.....ADDING a new form of communication after game ESRB ratings and info is placed on the box is one MAJOR change that happens.
Text chat does not change a game's ESRB rating, and every online game is released w/ the caveat "Game experience may change over time".NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Another is player interactions and the speed of play.

I do agree that VOIP is a faster form of communication for those who are in range of you or while grouped. I've said this many times and maintain that this is simply a fact for those who are able to utilize it. That's why nobody wants it to be removed.
However, this does not address the fact that for many activities in the game, it is helpful to reach a wider audience or to let people read your words at their leisure, as is the case w/ guild advertising, trade, or even just asking the people in your zone for help w/ questing, world bosses, or an issue you may be having.
That is why I have been advocating including BOTH, because they are both great tools. And you should really use the right tool for the job.
Don't hand me a hammer when I need a wrench and tell me that I'M the one who is being ridiculous. ; )NewBlacksmurf wrote: »ADDIng in text boxes does also require reworking of the UI. UI devs are not the same as those developing content. This is a pretty common misconception; you see it all the time. "No, don't add more costumes to the game because we want more dungeons!". Wardrobe designers are not the same people who design environments and encounters.
By the same token, UI designers are not the ones who are working on Imperial City or the Dark Brotherhood, though there may sometimes be overlap w/ these teams when there's downtime.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »AND...the next part of your comments...to me continues to cause me to ask over and over again.

It doesn't seem like you actually read that part of my comments, because you seem to have defaulted to "PC has text, play on PC". I already laid out just a few of the reasons why this is an unacceptable compromise for me.
Others have their own reasons and I decline to speak for them, but I've already laid out my own reasoning on this more than once. You just don't seem to want to acknowledge them.
When my friends who have waited over a year to play this game on PS4 can play w/ me on PC cross-platform, then we'll talk. Until then, let's just stop acting like "PC has text, go play that" is even close to sound reasoning. And that's just ONE of the reasons your solution doesn't work.

This is absolutely not the same thing as REMOVING voice chat.
Just as many of those who enjoy VOIP-only have stated that they are fine w/ text chat being in the game, but they won't use it, those who prefer text chat are fine w/ VOIP being the game, even if they won't use it.
But the vast majority will very likely use BOTH forms of communication for the things they are best for, just like in every other game in the history of gaming that has included both (when both are robust enough to be used, there are cases where VOIP simply isn't up to par and thus people don't use it).
It's not like there isn't precedence for this type of thing.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »The belief that adding a feature that allows different groups to opt in and out of forms of communication will have a huge outcome on the game in a negative manner as it splits people. And after development, in reality, the community is ALREADY split anyway. And far moreso now that there is no way to reach anyone outside of your immediate vicinity unless you are grouped or guilded w/ them.
That's not even including the plethora of people who simply turn off Area Chat currently anyway and leave themselves w/out any form of communication at all or those who MISS communications because they are locked into a certain channel and you simply can't listen to all of the channels at once (like you could if you had chat enabled).
That is why I simply don't understand how the inclusion of text-based chat could hurt the situation any, as this community divide was not avoided at all.
Even WITH VOIP-only enabled, it is impossible to talk to the vast majority of players on your server due to range limitations. This hurts communications more than a 50/50 split EVER could, imo.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Simply put, the goal of this game is to bring as many people together on one server as possible with one form of communication. Simply put, VOIP has failed at doing this much more than text-based chat has in the exact same game. The current implementation of VOIP itself has had the greatest impact on splitting the community when compared to all other factors.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Communication is one of the most influential things about humans. The localization work for this title has already been done. Why on earth do you think they would have to do the exact same thing over again?
Do you believe that all of those files simply disappeared from their databases when they ported this game to consoles?
You don't seem to have a very good grasp on how development for a game is handled; I'm not sure why you keep bringing up these virtual non-issues. If you don't know how to build a game, then don't talk about what goes into building a game? : /

Text chat takes A LOT longer to type and read/respond compared to voice chat. My first observation in console BETa was while running around I met, grouped and played all at once. Quests, dungeons and trying to explain things was always done while playing. New dungeons took less of the time to play even explaining to brand new players.
Text chat as experienced on PC in closed BETa to launch took an average of 1-2 hours per reg dungeon. Console took 15-30 mins.

Then, if it's "just what it is", why do you continue to argue with people whom are just asking ZOS for a "new count" on the subject?
And, why input your own seemingly personal arguments against textchat?
Does people asking for something they want hurt you somehow?
I hate to say it, Mate, but at this point it just looks like you crave attention, or just like pissing in other people's oatmeal.

I agree they are different , but I've watched others play Neverwinter on their Xbox One. They type and use it MUCH faster than he does in this video.
He's either terrible at it , or is exaggerating trying to make it look worse than it is.

Great question.
I continue to participate in this opinionated discussion because adding text chat does negatively change the gameplay for me. I intentionally quit MMO on PC that don't support voice chat and turn off text chat as I don't like what comes with it.
Being in closed 2013 PC BETa for this game while fun to test new things, the social piece was no different than any other MMO.
Learning that the console would have voice chat was my main interest and even the confirmation of no text chat for console BETA was a perfect experience for me. Hearing from Zenimax what they were hoping to do was also a plus for me.
I jump into this because as mentioned just above this is one of my hot topics.
I don't want the PC communication experience on console. I don't want what comes with it either.
It doesn't hurt me that people are asking for something they want.
It bothers me that people are trying to force their communication choice onto the console when it already exists in the way they enjoy it on PC.
To be honesty To me it's selfish to have something but refuse to use it where it exists and to try and force others to play they way you or they want to.
I really don't crave attention and have no desire to as you say "*** In people's oatmeal" BUt I don't want people pissing in mine.
Also understand this topic has had multiple threads for moths locked and closed but for some reason even after a few ESO live and forums staff comments that it's not going to be on console people keep creating new threads.
What you see from me is a lot of back n forth from the same few that we've gone back n forth since April on the same topic.
How is it that I'm seeking attention?
Pretty sure those comments that say...bumping or the comments made to say ZOS look or ppl just come ting to keep the topic on the first page are your attention seekers.
I'm being tagged and quoted so I'm responding...
Other than that I've made comments here and there just as normal forum discussions by others are made.
But I'm sure you don't see it that way because I'm against the idea so that somehow makes my participation different that your in the thread

Trains.
Planes.
Ships.
Buses.
Privately-Owned Automobiles.
All carry people and items from "A" to "B".
Each has it's own good points, and bad points.
Each can do things the others cannot.
Some, can do all the things the others can.
Should 4 of the 5 just be totally gotten away with because; "The customer base is being split!", or because; "That type of transit is old-fashoined!"?
I think not.
The thing is...it's not up to you. It's not up to me.
Zenimax based on the context of your example has said...yes...scrap it.
That's just what it is man
Then, if it's "just what it is", why do you continue to argue with people whom are just asking ZOS for a "new count" on the subject?
And, why input your own seemingly personal arguments against textchat?
Does people asking for something they want hurt you somehow?
I hate to say it, Mate, but at this point it just looks like you crave attention, or just like pissing in other people's oatmeal.
Good reply.
Thank you.
I guess we will just "agree to disagree".
While I understand you "not wanting the PC feel on console".
The option to turn off something is not the same as the forcing of somebody to use it.
As it is now, all the "MMO Fans" that enjoy the things that textchat brings are being forced into not having it.
This makes us feel "bad".
Just as if ZOS had at the last minute decided to not use VOIP and went ONLY with text would have made you feel, I am sure.
All either side really wants is a game that they can enjoy.
However, some people (Seemingly like you.) don't want a portion of those players to have something they feel is a very important part of the game for them to fully enjoy it.
They/We don't want to take anything away from you/them.
We/I just want the ability to enjoy them game the way we/I want...on the platform we/I enjoy playing.
No matter how many times somebody says "PC has that, go play PC" these console players, like Me, will NOT "go to PC".
We will just quit playing ESO completely.
Which means Many, MANY, dollars in revenue that ZOS loses.
All for the simple want of a...word.

I checked that article and you are correct about the figures , but the source they consulted did not include digital sales.
Direct downloads generally make up three times the amount of physical copies sold. I can understand the confusion as from reading the article its clear the guy just phoned it in off a press release and some standard background filler.
I will look around and try to find out if PlayStation or Xbox keep track of digital sales publicly.
