How to enjoy the game?

Mahowl

Drem Yol Lok, mortals,

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time getting in to the game to enjoy it, the main problem is that um... *sigh* it's not like Skyrim (pls no bash, its just how i feel ;( )... I bought the game thinking the lore is gonna keep me going somehow even if it was a generic MMO, but generic it is and the lore couldn't sustain me. I even forced myself to enjoy it, which pretty much contradicts the whole point of enjoyment, lol. Maybe the game is fine, maybe it's just me who is getting old *sigh*... Anyway, let's leave the little bitchy side of mine alone.

I have a question for You guys, is there something missing in the early game that is present in later parts of the game that is enjoyable? If it's pvp, I am not that interested.

P.S. if you think this is a stupid post, I am sorry, but I am simply a desperate man, who still has hope and looks for a miracle or something like that.

Pruzaan Hinde,

Mahowl

So, it is a simplified form of most ES games.

The world is a bit larger, but its also has an insane amount of players running alongside you. The details are missing (picking up EVERY object, detailed story, etc)

If you are looking for good single player game, this is not it, this is fun if you like the basic ES game, but want to do it with a huge group, or some friends.

ESO is not, and was not meant to be, Skyrim 2, Skyrim Online, or Skyrim With Friends. If you are looking for that single player RPG experience, this is not the game for you.

Is it bad that I prefer to play it alone then with the 2 people I know? We all have different agendas so I find that things are much smoother and simpler when I play solo.
Grouping with randoms is even worse...I have yet to enjoy the MMO feel of this game and area chat tends to make me loathe dealing with others.

I felt the same way at first. Big fan of Skyrim and I had no experience with MMOs to speak of. Basically I was overwhelmed and lost and a little disappointed at first. I finally started listening to the Area Chats and found someone who was looking for a partner to grind levels and quest with so we grouped up, and that was super fun for me. Working on leveling and also grouping with people to do dungeons keeps me coming back. Working on some of the craft/skills (like provisioning or clothing making or the ever-popular blacksmithing) is neat too. If you want to link up and work on leveling, I'm happy to do so! I'm on NA xbox in the Ebonheart pact. Anyway, I hope you find your joy with it!

Grinding loads and loads of zombies and goblins.

If you're looking for lore, Craglorn awaits later (which nobody plays because rewards suck and you need a group for almost everything), and there's lots of cool stuff in the other faction's zones.

    What's your faction anyway?

I'm sorry you feel that way. For me, it's impossible to force myself to like a game, I either enjoy it for what it is, or I don't and I move on to something else. Maybe ESO is not for you.

That said, it would be helpful to know what you don't like about it. it sounds like you could benefit from an immersion based questing structure. If so, stick with the main questline, and perhaps the mages guild and/or fighters guild. You will have to do the main story for each zone to finish these, but they are cohesive, semi lore friendly storylines that are pretty compelling the first time through.

Like other TES titles, you can level quickly by doing every little side quest, and killing everything, but that may not be the right way to play for you.

Lastly, since this is a MMO and not single player game, socialization is a key component, but one that you need to make work for you. Use these forums to find a guild that matches your play style (questing, pvp, RP, etc). Once you are integrated with a guild or two, that alone may keep you engaged in the game. That's true for many of us.

have you tried looking for the lore books?
there are books all over (not just the blue glow ones for the mages quest) that have fragments of books and bits of the lore to read.
with the right bonus, you can have them stored in your account i think? i cant rememeber exactly which one, it was busted for a while back after the start of the game, but its like having perfect recall for every book you read.

    have you tried personal RPing?
no, not the one where you roleplay with players, but the one where you pick a set of character rules and stick with them.
(like, i had a pacifist tauren in wow. she was a priest and apart from the very first quest to kill, which was mandatory, i only took non combat quests with her. used her to gather herbs. she would pop a protection bubble spell and run away from everything but undead XD. only learned the bread, fruit and vegi cooking recipes with her and stuff like that. i had a lot of fun with that character)

its not full roleplay, but its fun even if you end up totaly gimping that character.(at least to some of us)

I really dig the game myself. If you don't like it idk what to tell you. I'm finding the game to be highly enjoyable and am only lvl 22 atm. Much like other video games, you like some, you don't like some. This is the most enjoyable title I've played in quite some time. Completely pulled me away from the witcher 3 and I'm at the damn end and can't bring myself to finish it because I to play ESO. :D

then may i reccomend Harvestcraft for your minecraft enjoyment ^^ it has soyabeans and tofu and allows you to replace every dairy and meat item in its recipes with ether silken or firm tofu and soyamilk. also has cotten plants so you dont have to kill sheep or spiders for string and wool ^^

ah, good old times with my mudyhooves ^^ but it can add a little fun to a character. like how some elder scrolls vampires have a thing for boots. have you ever noticed? you could make your vamp character compulsorarly loot boots every time they find them XD or pick your own favoured enemy (ranger perk from DnD) only instead of dooing more damage to them, you see one you HAVE! to try to kill it lol.
sometimes its the silly little things that make the fun.

That was actual some good, honest advice they gave you.

You seemed too attached to Skyrim, and instead of playing this game to experience an TES-based game, you wanted to re-experience Skyrim. Thymos's advice can be used for any game.

Why play a game if you are having no fun? If you had to make a thread to get to get people to convince you to have fun, then that shows signs.

I never truly played Skyrim a lot, and that's also not the reason why I bought this game. I bought it because I wanted to have an MMO time sink and because of the awesome Elder Scrolls lore. The problem is that most people think this will be just like any other Elder Scrolls game, but it isn't. It's the same lore, the same world, the same title, but it isn't an elder scrolls game that is just online.

You can play it like you did with Skyrim, but you will run into problems soon enough. Questing and the story lines are a big part of ESO, but they are just a means to level and reach the endgame. While in Skyrim the game was all about questing and storylines, in ESO it's a little different.

If you don't like to quest and stuff in this game, other things to do at later levels are: vet/normal Dungeons, Trials, Farming and of course PvP. You mentioned that you didn't enjoy PvP, but you just need to get used to it :P There are a lot of people that can help you with PvP builds and such to make it easier.

P.S. I don't think your post is stupid, this is a common problem with a lot of players ;)

    Ways to enjoy
    1) Try a new class or faction starting area - some zones are more fun than others or may appeal to you more
    2) Try to enjoy the scenery, quests, story - don't just kill kill kill
    3) Ignore the quest marker and walk in a random direction and see what you find
    4) Try some crafting

What do you think is missing from this that Skyrim has (besides the shouts)?
Graphics are similar style but improved vs 360 graphics anyway :)
Music done by the same guy - yay Jeremy
Quests are similar - get this, kill that, etc...
Zones are big and fun to explore

I hesitated buying this for xbox one after playing it on PC. My wife was a huge Skyrim fan and I didn't think it was going to appeal to her. But she proved me wrong and plays it everyday. So that's my endorsement.

I came from Skyrim & all of the other TES games. I do enjoy it, but it took me a while to get into it. Some of the things I've found -
    • You CAN enjoy it as mostly a single player game, but with other folks around, and other folks helping & being helped by you. You can ease into the group stuff with Dolmens, Public delves, PUGs, and even just running along with a few others while inside a "solo delve".
    • There is much more involved, and it is a little harder to get into things like crafting, the skills, buying stuff thru guilds, stealing & fencing, etc. In the single player games you can jump in and start doing stuff a little easier.
    • As others said, explore. I really dig creeping around in a more advanced area, just trying to get a few skyshards or find a wayshrine, or kill a single mob 10-12 levels above me.
    • Try different weapons, playstyles, etc. I've been playing over a year & just now got into my first stealth assasin char - I love it.

    1. It was just an answer to Thymos and it is my own fault for posting a rant without telling I still want to want play, which gave birth to his answer "don't play", but at the same time, the rant plays a part of introducing myself so others can reckon my position and give an appropriate answer with their personal (maybe similar) experience and their ways of dealing with it.
    2. Are you a psychologist? :DD
    3. Why? Because not always I give up on a game just because I did not like the first impression of it, sometimes all it takes is a new perspective, a push, an opinion from someone else. And also, I just felt like asking this question and making a rant, which is as valid reason as any. :DD

stop thinking this is a MMORPG and treat it like a solo/single player game and you will have tons more fun. think of all those other players are actually amazing AI NPCs that run around doing random things competing with you and sometimes help you at world bosses and anchors.

You said you weren't interested in PvP but what about group content? Maybe join a guild and do dungeons and delves with guild mates. Trading is a lot of fun. You could join a trade guild and get involved there. The trading game is a world unto itself. I love it. Try different characters and play styles.

If you're completely averse to any group content it's gonna be a challenge. Good luck. I'm sure others are in your boat. This is my first mmo, but i have a lot of history with multiplayer shooters and co-op games, so i've really gotten into eso despite my primary attraction only being the elder scrolls world and lore. Who knows, the mmo stuff might grow on you.

Haha, well, there are some fun things there you may be missing that you might find for your enjoyment.
For instance, when I was leveling I greatly enjoyed Treasure Maps. I bought them everywhere I could and found most treasures' locations on my own without looking them up. Was great fun for me having to think where that place could be located, some took me hours or even days but I enjoyed it(rewards suck btw, don't hope to find anything worthy there, just do it for the process if you happen to like it).

Then I also loved looking for skyshards with my first character, I found every single skyshard (outside of Cyrodiil...you'll see why if you ever go there) by the hints they have in achievements section, some also took forever but it was fun, made me think quite a bit.

If you look closely there're also some very fun things here and there, starting with really cool quests(they're a few but they exist!) or occasional easter egg like a non aggressive orc in the middle of angry orc settlement who just suggest you to fish with him, a pride of big cats named with names like Lazum-Dar or...do you know what happens if you spin your character really fast in character selection?;)

You might enjoy exploring Cyrodiil if you manage to avoid PvP people(though I'd say you should give PvP a try at some point, I used to be strictly PvE-y but it can be fun), it actually reminded me a lot of Skyrim. Ignoring the(mostly very boring) quests there're a lot of weird locations there not shown on any map. Random shrines to Daedric princes with worshippers you can talk to. A crazy necromancer house(he's not aggressive, you can chat to him and enjoy the sight of his skele-servants). Stuff;)

Also there's always group content. I imagine that's not the answer you're looking for but it *can* actually be fun. Try to make friends with whom it'll be equally fun to lose and win and maybe you'll find something really enjoyable to do(there're 16 normals and 7 veteran dungeons in game, plus a whole group zone(which actually has pretty cool lore and graphics but very lousy rewards), not to mention public dungeons and Trials) - the feeling of improving as a team and overcoming new challenges together can be really cool. There're some pretty nice storylines in those instances(make sure your teamates are also interested in them though, a lot of people tend to skip it all) and some rather interesting mechanics to figure out(though there could definitely be more...).

It in part due to technical limitations and having to satisfy a wide range of audiences that ESO has been forced to drift away from its rich ES roots. But not completely. Most of the quests are well written and are without a doubt superior to the typical MMO "grind quests" that many MMOs features. Their class and skill system permits players to broaden their play styles and horizons by not definitely conforming to the holy trinity.

Things like soloing dungeons on your own with no interference from others, richly handcrafted environments and other 'flavorful' things like radiant AI are things that they either feel like they don't have the time to do or won't be well received in the long run. MMOs have a tendency of being about the (usually group centered) combat experience alone and there is a decent demographic that wants to rush to that combat experience as soon as possible. Things like unique, handcrafted dungeons simply don't appeal to them like a singular 'epic' boss does. That is simply how the market is perceived.

But for levels 1 - 50, the game shines with its story narrative and solo/duo play. The real problems start to become more apparent when you reach VR levels--with limited avenues of leveling, the levels essentially limit how you play by essentially forcing you to either grind, PvP, complete Cadwell's Almanac or a limited number of dungeons/trials. Then when you reach the true level cap (soon to be VR16), current end game mostly consists of group-centered play. Which is excellent for those who want it, but it simply does not deliver for those who have been used to or drown in with the solo/duo experience.

But most of these problems are being addressed (or so they say)---veteran levels are planning to be removed and the next DLC is planned to be a soloable zone. I believe they know that the post lvl 50 experience is something of a problem for most of the player base (or at the very least needs to be polished).

    my two crowns...

clean up your hud, down to the bare minimum.

get interested in your character's story and the wacky adventure they are on.
story-wise, if you can accept the three alliances war, its a perfectly good reason you don't have a totally open world map

& try another character! different race, different class, different alliance... its fun!
