Race change?

Ladies and gentlemen,

I've seen a few people mention race changes becoming available in ESO. I'm personally okay with this idea, as I know that a lot of people want to change their char's race, because when they created (let's say) a magica nightblade Orc, they did not think about how it could affect their performance in the end-game content.

What I would like to know, is how could you possibly change the race without changing the appearance? Does this mean that we will have to wait for the appearance change option first? And how could it potentially affect the game? What are your thoughts on the race changes?

Of course, no one wants something like:

-"hey, give me 5 minutes, I'm just gonna change my race for this trial/dungeon real quick."

(P.S.- this is my first post, so please be gentle, sempai)

    Welcome to the forums.

If you change race, surely your going to change the look of the character, I don't think you can do much about that, even the gear look may change, but for me if I wanted to change race then I would accept the appearance change if the change gives me the buffs/traits I need.

Race change will obviously come with an appearance customization, it won't be randomized.

    yeah, take me for example:

I created a magicka based Orc sorcerer back at launch.
I knew back then, that this race/build combo would be less then ideal, of course.
However, back then, the game had softcaps!
Therefore, my orc sorc had exactly the same max magicka and magicka-reg as for example an Altmer sorc - where my orc sorc was weaker (ironically) was in the stamina and health departments. Reason: with soft caps in place, my "mismatched" race character could compensate by simply putting more resources towards the "primary" stats, allowing the "secondary" stats to fall lower then they would on an optimal race.

and I was fine with that. loosing a few HP and either 3% spellcost reduction (breton) or 4% lightning damage (altmer) for the privilege of playing an orc instead was ok in my book.

fast forward a year, and ZoS decided to remove softcaps.
Suddenly my Orc sorc has 10% less max magicka, and 9% less magickareg in comparision to an altmer sorc (in addition to the 4% lightning damage differential that has always been there). Instead of lower health I now have higher health and stamina then the altmer sorc - but that does not actually help my build at all (remember, I did not care having those values lower in the first place)...

So, due to the removal of softcaps, the importance of racials has massively increased.

I would not have created an orc spellcaster in a game devoid of softcaps...
But the prospect of rerolling: grinding up all the vet levels, getting my undaunted rang up, get back to my PvP rang (27).... well, I'm not exactly going to enjoy doing that...

    so yeah, @ZOS_RichLambert , I'd sure appreciate making race-change options a priority

Or your looks wont change at all and they will explain that race change means "you suddenly discover that your family have roots in X/Y race and your grand grand grand something was actually an Y race while your grand grand grand something was X race" and because of that you find to have natural affinity to A,B,C things (new racial passives of newly choosen race) instead of D,E,F (racial passives of previous race)

well, as someone who wants to play an Orc spellcaster, I'd obviously love that option.
That said, I'm not sure giving up one of the flavours of elderscroll lore to accomodate people like me would actually be the best move here

I suspect race change will cost like 20-30k crowns (20-30 dollars), so that won't be an issue. Even when it would cost 5 dollars, not many people are going to do that.

Who said they wont add a precaution to that?

Only one race change per month? With like 2 confirmations to make sure people know what they are doing

    Thanks for your thoughts guys!

I do like the idea of adding a race change cooldown, and of course the high price of the race change will most likely to prevent it from being frequent.

However, with the race and appearance change, you pretty much create a new character, however keeping the achievements and level. Wouldn't it make sense to just implement special scrolls that would insta level your character to lvl. 50? (Following WOW strategy). That being said, this would only make sense after the removal of the veteran ranks, as people would still have to grind up 16 vet ranks.

Sidenote: If you think that they will simply remove VR and then waste all the work people put to VR1-16 including all materials and every single crap accompanied to it - you are really naive.
The VR will be gone as they wont be named "veteran" anymore and will become normal lvls. There is no absolute point to remove whole 16 lvls into game and set it back in progress back to like what? 2 years ago?

Of course I don't think so. In WOW, you insta level to 90, however there are 100 levels.

What I meant is that firstly, the vet ranks should be removed and, as you say- turned into levels. Then the whole insta level scroll would make sense. And I personally don't find it P2W at all.

Race change please! Immediately. Definitely needs a cooldown or we'll have Wykkyd's Racechanger.

would absolutely LOVE to see a race change by like a face sculptor but changing the appearance of your character is almost the entire point so no, what you want is a perk change
sometimes I'll take subjects to far and ask for an arm, leg and maybe an eye, please be patent with me.

    Yes, to race change!

Probably the best way to do race change would be making it an option in an full character appereance editor.

Like, open editor, play with sliders, for each slider moved from the "current" position, a small crown fee is added to a running total, select different race, a large crown fee is added to the total. Reset to current if not happy, play around with the options until satisfied, click "make it so" button and pay crown cost, enjoy playing your remade character.

Though I personally don't see any reason to change any of my characters races at this time, I would dearly love to see a character editor to fix some small details that looked all right in chargen, but not quite as good in live game... a hip shape here, a voice change there, etc.

ZOS, give us race changes! I made a dragon knight, not knowing how bad the race I chose was (Nord), and I still suffer from that decision today.

Honestly, it seems to me like the easiest route would be to allow race and appearance customization together. In previous elder scrolls games, there was a console command to retrigger the character creation at any point. Your character, armor and all, would suddenly get plopped into the creator where you could do whatever and be done with it.

Honestly, it seems the easiest method would be to have tokens you can use on a character. When you use it, it triggers an extra button on the login screen that says "Edit Appearance" or something like that, along with the log in button. Click that button and off you go to the creator.

It would be cool to be able to switch classes also. The penalty would be you only have the three starter skills unlocked lol hardcore mode.

I think the first race change of each toon you have if you so choose to change race on all of them (you would think you would have picked a better race for a build with 8 tries) should be free. Since eso made racial passive changes to the game and also changed the game mechanics/meta. someone's build that was viable before they made those changes isn't anymore. Basically forcing them to re roll a toon. I believe that would be fair, but after that there should definitely be a fee to change it again after that. Also, I would like them to allow us to change the toons name as well if we can change race. Because some of my characters names suit the race I chose. Can't have a khajit name on a high elf or what have you. (unless that high elf was adopted by a khajit family lol). Either way, I'll be happy with just the race change. Definitely would like to change one of my toons race. Maybe two.
