Poor Sportmanship/Bulling

Excuse me one moment while I face palm hard enough to give myself a black eye.

    ...

Okay! Now that that is out of the way. You argue about bullying and childish behavior? I see these complaints are no less childish than those doing these things. The fact of the matter is, PvP stands for player vs player. We have a lot of "PvP" in real life. Such as football, boxing, tennis, hell even chess is PvP.

On a professional level, it is considered unsportsmanlike to taunt or talk smack to others in these fields. Though if you take a look around, it still happens. Now on a far more casual level of kids playing football in a park, you can bet there will be a lot of taunting, smack talk and even fights from time to time. If you come to to such a playing field and except or even feel entitled to not have to be subjected to these things, you are dead wrong.

Taunting is not "bullying" it's an action or gesture made to incite anger or aggression in the target so they they will attack or react negatively in response. Taunts are easily ignored, in fact, it is considered mature to ignore them. When it becomes "bullying" is only one Person A repeatedly taunts Person B over, and over again, when Person B has shown no reaction or interest in it. Now if Person B reacts, that's on them, as they could have chosen to ignore it. We learnt this stuff in first grade, so be the better man and walk away.

Now lets take all this and toss it into a virtual world were everyone is looking to have fun. "Teabagging" or what have you is a form of taunting, and can very easily be ignored. Just return to wayshrine and shrug it off.Now I'm going to let you in on a little secret. How to avoid being targeted and harassed in pvp. (This applies to all video games.) If you are in a place where you can be attacked by another player and are not interested in pvp, simply... don't fight back.

Turn and face them that you acknowledge them (And that you don't look like a bot.) and just stand there. Don't atatck back, don't try to resist with defensive skills. Just stand there and die. They may tauntbag or laugh at your or soemthing along those lines, but more often than not, they won't attack you again. Because they know you won't fight back and are "Boring." Now, if they attack you again, just do the same exact thing. Turn and face them and just stand there. Very rarely will people come at you a third time, becoause you are techically just a waste of time and boring knowing you aren't going to fight back. Now if a player keeps attacking you when you don't fight back, then it can start to be considered bullying or harassment. However that takes a few deaths to even get close to the "Consider" part.

Now, in a situation where player stand to gain something from you, it's on you to protect yourself. Because it doesn't matter what you do, as players more than likely kill you. Not necessarily for fun or harassment, because they stand to gain something from you. You may as well be a slightly more difficult than normal mob. In these instances, protect yourself.

Bring a friend(s) first of all. If you are a PvE player, there's a good chance you know a few people, so group up and farm/quest/grind with them. Safety in numbers. It is also wise to carry consumables like healing positions and the like. However most importantly of all.

    Be aware of your surroundings.

If you find mobs dead, or mobs missing where they should be. there is a good chance another player is nearby. In which case you can either avoid the area, or investigate to see if it's a friendly or not. When fighting, pan your camera aroudn every so often for signs of another in the area. If you think you might be in danger, you probably are. Finish off the mob then sneak away. This also applies to loot and banking. If ever at any point you ask yourself, "I should probably bank." You should have banked 5 minutes ago. Go bank and keep your loots safe. Lastly, if you do encounter another player who hasn't attacked you yet or is fighting mobs, don't show fear or hesitation. Chances are they are just afraid of you as you are to them if they are just there to collect stuff, and will probably run off if you don't viably seem to see them as a threat. Now if you back-peddle, move around a bunch awkwardly, they might get the idea that you are afraid of them, and give them confidence that they can probably take you. Don't give them that confidence. Just acknowledge them and be on your way.

TL;DR: In the end, a lot of it is on the player and how they respond or react to things. Being killed or taunted in pvp is not bullying or harassment. it's "Part of the game." How you respond to it however, is up to you. Only when it happens several times (over 3) by the same person could it even begin to be considered possible bullying or harassment. Any less and it's just "Part of the game."

I am an adult, a messed up adult, not some little kid unable to take a joke. I'm fine it you do it for fun, at least say so and appologize when I say that I dislike it. If you do it to humiiliate me, demoralize me, raise your self-esteem by killing mine which is already in oblivion by now...

At least some people get it, but as much as I'd like to say "Ok you made a good point to counter mine" I can't see such counter point that I can bring myself to agree with yet.

Nobody would tea bag or clam slam anyone in real life because there could be a nasty, lethal blood infection nobody knows about. Or you might accidentally sit in a puddle of enemy guts and get your legs wet and then you sweat a lot and develop a really bad case of jock itch. Or you might lean down and get lethal leg cramps.

Nobody likes being the target of a joke, but if you take offense to something ridiculous that wouldn't happen in real life, how are you going to feel when people can loot your dead body for progress items?

I probably tea-bag 50% of my kills. Normally because it's payback for that person snipe/ambush macro'ing and they deserve it. Either way, it's an animation in a video game. I can't believe this is a real thread. Just respawn.

Speaking for myself, i only bother to tea-bagg someone that earned my respect and put-up a good fight, others i just walk by and continue playing.

If the attitude is: You lost, now it's perfectly okay to humiliate you and treat you like the loser you are, then I am glad I cancelled my subscription today.

PvP is not for me. Period. I have absolutely no desire to compete with any of you. No desire, whatsoever to be "the best" (whatever that means) and absolutely no desire to be abjectly humiliated over and over and over because I am not as "good" a player as you are.

I will play ESO moving forward, but, apparently will never make it beyond the standard first 50 levels. Exposure to the antics and destruction in Cyrodil is beyond my ken.

ESO has taught me a few things: I am a single-person gamer. I am also a small group/local LAN/co-op gamer with people I know and trust. I am not a competitive gamer - I have no need for trophies and "accomplishments". PvP and MMO are for a different breed than I.

I respect all of you that enjoy your PvP and MMO. More power to you. You deserve each other.

Enjoy. I will not be joining you.

I know you don't care, so don't even bother to answer, but, realize that I am not the only person that is looking forward to ES6 as opposed to this muddled mess.

I find the whole thing fascinating... psychologically...

I mean... All the guys (maybe some women) of various ages... hanging out online... connected by headphones and avatars - bashing each other's sexuality - leave them alone for a few minutes, they immediately do the most vulgar and sexual things to each other that they can imagine.

I mean, there is an entire world out there to play the game in... killing bears, taking down Daedra... exploring the "unexplored"

and people naturally feel driven and compelled to use a lot of their imagination on sexualizing their characters and making them perform vulgar acts to each other....

    It really fascinates me...

We need Alfred Kinsey to look into this!!!

anyway... Kuri, there is a lot of humor in this... water finds its own level...

I'm one of the friendliest people around. I give to the poor freely in both real life and the game. I always try to be nice to strangers and even go out of my way to do simple things like hold a door, or give away ebony helms. My friendly person credentials are first rate.

I'm still going to teabag almost everyone.

    Because it's funny.

Nope, no childish, just extremely unrealistic given the nature of PvP and people in general.

The obvious solution is don't PvP, like ever, because regardless of where you go and what game you play there will always be one or two idiots out there who will do this sort of stuff. Alternatively, if you can't handle this sort of behaviour, perhaps MMOs aren't for you. Removing the human element removes any risks of 'poor sportsmanship', so there's that.

Personally I don't see what the big deal is, but that's just me.

It's not a general attitude of most PvP players (their unsubstantiated uber-OP-being attitude is far more common), but about a particular group that does behave like that. Just as in real life.

the funny thing is that this is not a PvP issue. He could be trying to do a dungeon with PvE players and maybe they don't like the way he is playing and kick him out of the group and say he is not good enough.... See what I mean.

At some point people need to realize this is a fantasy world and not reality. Its an M rated game to boot. I also agree with The_Sadist that it is not realistic to have the expectation of respect in a video game.

I will often find a zerg group and systematically pick off stragglers and sabotage siege equipment and overall just harass an overwhelming force if i can't find a team to counter zerg with. Eventually ill get too brave and end up in a shiz storm of reds and will finally die. I think nothing of it as my K/D ratio by the time I'm caught is pretty sweet.

However it never fails that some low lvl zergling will feel so inclined to teabag me. LOL I just got face rolled by 20 people. GJ bro :unamused: ... I can't help but laugh about things like that and honestly the guy doing the humping was probably a victim of my covert operations a few minutes ago.

Long story short people hump you for absolutely no reason except to get in your head. If you blow your stack about it and get upset they have won..... just remember that

If you want to complicate an utterly straightforward situation, go to your wife with a blank sheet of paper and tell her you feel there's something really wrong with it. She will generate a problem for you.

Now, you're doing the exact same thing now - with teabagging being the anecdotic sheet of paper.

Of course, I suppose I could take the opposite tack and turn in to one of those horrible, horrible people that hunts down their enemies (or perceived enemies) and kills them. You know, stalk them until you find them and then treat them like the dogs they are.

Too bad, playing truly bad isn't really an option in ESO. Maybe I should explore it more thoroughly. I don't suppose you really have to help anyone except that Saintly bozo you rescued from Oblivion, after all.

    Let's get a little philosophical...

the brain really doesn't completely know the difference between what is real and what is not real...

if we were both on the... tennis team... you could go to practice... sweat, swing, and work on your game...

I could do the same thing from my couch... eyes closed... imagining it...

Much of the same areas of our brains would light up in PET scans... you doing... me imagining...

in both of our brains, neural pathways would be growing to accommodate our new skill/experience...

So, imagination becomes a kind of real thing because are fantasies are manifesting themselves as they create real neural pathways that represent real memories of the experience...

So, to what extent is this "safe," "imaginary" behavior real?

To what extent does role playing/fantasizing transform our self image and concept of others?

If a people are going around tea bagging each other, to what extent are they really tea bagging each other...

Imagine explaining this one to your friends, parents, boss, spouse...

Nah, I don't really want to perform sexual acts with corpses.. I just like pretending to online...

Nah, I wouldn't really like to tea bag one of my friends... but I like to pretend to... it's fun!

    I'm not judging...

    It just cracks me up...

but I'm too old to be playing video games anyway...

any IB students out there want to bring this up in Theory of Knowledge class?

    Calm down.

Look, this is the internet. A lot of people are very different on the internet to how they are in real life. People can essentially hide behind a screen and say what they want with no consequence.

At the end of the day, this is just a video game. Anything they do is not a slight against you. In any way. They just do it because to them, it's fun. And they get some sort of weird pleasure out of acting like an ***. Welcome to the internet. That is what they do.

They don't know you personally, not are they really making fun of you or anything about you. The internet for good or bad gives everyone an opinion and to reach everyone else.

Is it right? No, likely not. Is this how the internet is? Yep.
