Wish they'd change armor

Captainfez3
To me armor selection is way too one sided. I strongly dislike that the role you want to play determines the armor you select. I'd much rather see ONLY defensive bonuses on armor, such as increased spell resist on light and increased armor on heavy. It would also be fine by me if light and medium retained their respective resource regen bonuses, because I don't want to see everyone just choose to roll in heavy armor. I would then restrict the armor skills to each armor type and get rid of all the offensive bonuses and pretty much everything else I mentioned.

Armor choice should be influenced by role slightly, but you should be able to choose a different armor type to acquire access to its passives and active skill while not feeling like you are committing suicide with your chosen role.

I don't mind each armor line having some offensive abilities. What I do wish they had done, however, is had each armor line have two different paths you could take: a defensive one and an offensive one. You would have to choose one per line that you leveled up.

I think that this would have opened up a few more options for character building. Why shouldn't I be able to tank in medium or light armor? I would just be more nimble and try to avoid attacks instead of absorbing the impacts. Meanwhile, why can't I be an offensive heavy armor wearer? At one point, you gained weapon power per piece of heavy armor equipped, which at least helped a bit, but that is gone.

I think that at this point it's probably too late for something like this, but I think it would've been great.

Personally I dislike the way armor is right now. Why can't I be a magicka heavy armor user or a stamina light armor user?

The benefits shouldn't reflect a particular build type focus.

Nothing is stopping you from doing this. You are trading magic-oriented buffs and resists for 4-5 times the amount of armor. Heck, my current heavy chest-piece has almost as much armor as the rest of my light gear combined. It fits perfectly with the lore of powerful mages not running around in full heavy armor.

That being said, I wouldn't complain if there were both magicka and stamina oriented skills associated with each armor type, especially since most classes have at least a few magical abilities. The general benefits should still lead to certain roles, though. Quick and nimble fighters and magical sorcerers should always favor light; tanks and heavy hitters should favor heavy.

The spellslingers spend too much time reading books. It causes muscle atrophe. Put them in heavy armor and they wouldnt be able to move.

I think that is what bothers me most. There is no real reason to wear heavy armor if you aren't a tank, everyone either gets light or medium, but a lot of games have allowed for their warrior-esque fighters to wear heavy armor. I know ESO is not ES, but I always favored heavy armor in my play throughs, but I really have no desire to tank in this game so I'm not really going to need to wear heavy.

I also lament that you can't wear glass armor and other variants. I like the motif system, it works great for crafting, but it feels somewhat cheap that armors are just iterative changes as you level. I don't know what the veteran sets look like, so it probably gets better, but I wish I could use light armor that looks more like armors (mithril, elven, or glass) instead of always having to rock a robe.

What bugs me about armor is being forced to 5-1-1. I'm a tank, I don't want to wear cloth or medium armor. But it's too costly in endgame to give up the bonuses you get from mixing armors. I'd rather roll 7/7 and be a juggernaut like the good Talos intended. Everyone says you have freedom of choice in this game to play, specialize and customize how you want but everyone knows that if you don't tow the line you don't get good groups for endgame content. Doesn't matter if you want to be a unique snowflake. lol

I didn't realize you had to do this for endgame either. Well this just gets better and better lol.

^ It's all about the passives. And you gotta do it to take advantage of the the Undaunted Mettle passive that gives you +6% to all your attributes for having 3 types of armor on. I don't see the purpose of making you wear different armor types, but it is what it is.

My orsimer battlemages would disagree with you.

    Strongly.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
