Why does the game always take so insanely long to load after a patch?

Just patched, and I swear I've been waiting almost five minutes for the character screen to appear... Why does this happen after pretty much EVERY patch??

    what patch !?

Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater - how at first it's alright and you can handle it, and then as it gets closer and closer to the time when you must breathe, how urgent the need becomes, the lust and the hunger to breathe. And then the panic sets in when you begin to think that you won't be able to breathe - and finally, when you take in air and the anxiety subsides...that's what it's like to be a vampire and need blood.

I just assumed it was your account's database being re-initialized, and the server that handles that getting hammered on patch day.

Yes it does. My trick is.. load up game after patch. Then alt+f4 and retry. 2nd time it works faster.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

I always get a short pause in the music first time I load up the game after a patch, but it's usually seconds rather than minutes and never "insanely long". I suppose the timing may be dependent on the size of your computer's memory or some other element of its specification. I assume it's caused either by some form of notification or patch application the first time the game is run after patching.

So do I. I only have MSE running in the background, and do not have any addons installed.

Is your hard drive defragged? It might take longer than usual for a patch to be applied/loaded if the game files aren't optimally placed. Mine is on auto-defrag.

Just trying to think of any different circumstances that would lead to different load times. Some people have always complained about long/infinite load times, while others have no such issues, so it must be down to different setups at the users' end.

It only happens after a patch! Normally, it doesn't even take 30 secs.

I sort this in the pile "things that will never be fixed", along with the infamous "PatchManifestVersionFail" error.

It's recreating some cache files from the patched client. It needs to read and process data from the whole client again.

Has been asked very often by many, inlcuding myself, ZOS have never deigned to reply.

I'm pretty sure the game does some sort of recompile/rebuild of cache and/or resources after each patch, and if that's the case it will always take a bit longer than normal. Just how long will depend essentially on your storage speed. In any case this is completely different from the infinite loading screens that creep up during gameplay. Long load times after patching are productions predictable and reproducible. Infinite loading screens are random and their duration varies greatly (I usually give it a couple of minutes, but after that I usually Alt-F4 out of the game and relog).

You got this from ZOS, or are you just assuming?

You may be right, whatever the cause, it should be done DURING THE PATCHING and not in 5-10 minutes at the first login.

I do think that the game sorts things out (indexes, catalogs, discovers, or whatever) during the very first time the game is played after a patch. How long it takes to do this is dependent upon the overall speed of the client system. It has always done this and, invariably, someone eventually complains about it. The code to do this is obviously in the game, not the launcher or patcher. It may not be practical to put this code into the patcher.

In the past, people have suggested terminating the game and restarting it because the game is "hung" and needs to be restarted. I recommend a lot of patience instead. I often wondered if the people who were having problems with assets not loading and game crashing were also the ones who were quick to declare the game "hung" and terminate it after a patch.
