just out of curiosity what MMO did you start on and was it as colossal as MMO's these days.
tsk tsk.. dam old timers and all their "back in my day" nonsense lol
@Noomfy-Mop You made me laugh pretty hard thereMy first RPG on PC was Morrowind in 2002, so I may be kind of a vet but there are many here who go back much, much farther. Lots of walking in that game for those who remember.
My first MMO on PC was vanilla WoW, but I only played sporadically. I'd say the first MMO I really got into was Lord of the Rings Online. I bought a lifetime founder's sub in 2007. ESO reminds me a lot of LotRO in terms of the vastness and beauty of the game world, and overall, a great community. As a lowbie in LotRO you pretty much ran everywhere until about level 20-25. Horses were completely unaffordable, as were the swift travel stables, so you footed it everywhere to save coin. Finally getting that horse was a really big deal. Seriously, people from all over the server would send you grats messages. Once people began to level up and make money it became a kind of tradition in many guilds to buy a newer guildmate their first horse with the understanding they would do the same for someone else in the future. A lot of that has changed now in LotRO, as players are used to getting everywhere fast and want mounts at lvl 1, but TBH it was pretty cool back in the day. A mount gave you a real sense of accomplishment.
So anyway, I don't mind walking. I tend to gather more mats and find cool places that way. In a lot of ways ESO is the game LotRO could have become if it would of had more development resources and a larger player base. It was huge, but not this huge and the graphics were cutting edge at the time. Both very cool worlds to explore.
Once you learn the ins and outs of travel in ESO you'll see that it's not too much of a PITA to get around quickly. Hope you're enjoying the game!
@UrQuan This is the book you're looking for: Wayshrines of Tamriel. There's a text somewhere in-game (and I can't remember its name, otherwise I'd post a link to it, as I'm sure the text from it must be on uesp or some other site) that explains, in theoretical terms, why we can teleport to wayshrines. In a nutshell (as far as I remember it anyway - I might get some parts of this slightly wrong), the wayshrines were erected by pilgrims and worshipers at "holy" places where the barrier between Aetherius and Mundus is thin. As a vestige (or possibly specifically as a "paragon" vestige) we have an intrinsic ability to travel from one of these places where Aetherius can be reached to another, as long as we have attuned ourselves to them. This is apparently only theoretically possible for an individual whose soul has somehow had its connection to Mundus broken.I agree who exactly are you paying you are in the middle of nowhere you just tossing a pile of gold in the air or something? Teleportation has always been a magic spell in elder scrolls it should be here too. The pay to port is just dumb.
I had an idea for Wayshards (pieces of a Wayshrine) that would let players teleport anywhere they wanted to.

I still think it would be a cool idea.

you can just fast travel to a guild mate or friend at any time, no matter the distance for free?
well that's even better.. provided your in a large guild.
That's correct. You won't travel directly to that person, but will spawn at the wayshrine closest to their location. This only works with guildmates or friends that are online, and logged onto a toon in the same faction as you.
Brought my wife's character to Cold Harbor that way.

Yeah I remember lotro. Was so close to getting it too but I was in the midst of my first WoW char and didn't t think I had the time. It did look pretty dam good though. It sounds really awesome about how guilds would buy their newbies a mount. Sounds like a real community trying to help each other out. I hear what you mean about real accomplishments, it seems that so many games these days are catering to more casual players... "You can either spend hours and hours EARNING the best gun/car/boost/whatever in game or you can go to your respective consoles online store and pay for it"..
It could just be me but I feel games were more challenging 15+ years ago.
Especially when they didn't have a save feature and you had to finish the whole game in one session.. lol dam.. Is that showing my age

Pff... You're a wee babe when it comes to RPGs and MMOs
I played Ultima V circa 1992. You could port around using "moongates", which only came out at night and would take you to a destination determined by the phases of the twin moons. Terribly inconvenient system, but occasionally came in handy. As for MMOs, Ultima again. Ultima Online came out in 1998 if I'm not mistaken, and again your could port around. In fact, you could port to arbitrary locations by using runes which you would "mark" at the target location, and subsequently "recall" to that location. I very much like ESO's system.
- Free and instant travel from wayshrines? Yes, please! In Tera Online, not only did travel cost you, you had to watch a freaking 5 minute animation of yourself mounting on a winged horse and travelling across the map (incidentally, this did give a great overhead view of the map, but it got old fast).
- Have instances be a target location for travel? Double yes, please! Runes of Magic would only let you travel to a couple locations per zone, then you had to walk to the instance, sometimes through areas that were quite difficult to navigate solo to join your group. That is, unless you bought some travel runes for real cash, of course. Then you could add arbitrary locations to a list of target locations and use the runes to travel there.
- Small gold sink to conveniently port when not at a wayshrine? Triple yes, please! For one, it's in-game gold and not real money, which is better than some other games. Also, the fact that there is a small gold sink makes you think twice about porting. If you don't port and instead walk/ride to your destination or the nearest wayshrine, you could possibly find skyshards, lorebooks, quests and quest hubs...
Noomfy-Mop wrote: »I feel its one of the more annoying features of the game personally.
I understand its there to promote exploration (at least I THINK that's its purpose) because im much more likely to walk or ride somewhere if I see that itll cost me 100gold or more to get there.
and in turn it helps levelling since youll almost definitely run into a good handful of bad guys on the way or discover some dungeon to clear.
however im still not a fan. theres enough in this game to spend your gold on without adding fast travel to that list. especially when theyre charging 42,700 for a mount.
ive taken to looking at it as the ESO taxi (and I don't like taxis either lol :P) it takes you where you want to go, you don't have to do any of the work but itll cost you.
I like the fact that you can fast travel from anywhere, unlike the witcher 3 where you have to find a sign post first. even if there is plenty of them its still a bit of a pain. but this is the first game I know of where you have to pay to fast travel. that being said my experience with mmorpg's is WoW 12ish years ago, destiny in the last year (if you can count destiny as an mmorpg) and now EOS.
I just hope it wont become the "new thing" in games in the future.
how do you feel about having to either pay to fast travel or spending a good 40 minutes (if not more) running through the wilderness trying to get to the other side of the country?
its not like your paying an npc to coach you there or anything.. you teleport yourself there using magic.. call me crazy but I always thought magic was free.

Sounds like we could both use /shakescane
OP Dont feel bad!!
As I was nearing VR14, I was in an exp group killing the named boss mobs in Craglorn (heady days, you younglings missed out there)
I watched amazed as people continually ran to the way shrines and ported to the next boss.
A few things hit my mind
- Dont these n00bs know that they just need to press M to bring up the map and select their target wayshrine
- They are spending a FORTUNE on travel
Sigh. I basically spent 14 levels of the game missing out on the very basic idea of Wayshrine travel

You only have to be in group with the person. Doesn't have to be a guild mate or friend. BUT you wont be able to travel to people in areas you havent unlocked. For instance I was on cadwells silver and couldn't travel to a buddy that was in the AD section (he was on cadwells gold) because I hadn't completed the pre requisite quests.
