Why Are Shields So Tiny?

Scorpio_Alik'ri
Most maple and oak shield styles look tiny as hell when they are equipped or on your back.

higher level shields tend to be bigger.
also, different racial style shields come in different sizes.

In a more realistic setting, that 'hole' in the khajiit shields would be used for a spear, so the shield can be held in front of you and used for blocking at the same time that you're thrusting with the spear at your opponent. Notches or holes were often put into shields used in spear, pike, and lance formations for that reason.

Problem is the animations in this game are in no way even close to actual combat techniques, and they left out spears and polearms =/

Because historically you'd never use anything larger than what we've got unless you were fighting in a phalanx/shield wall formation with a few hundred other soldiers. Large tower and kite shields (and the oh-so-famous spartan shields) were impractical and unwieldy in solo combat. The buckler, which wasnt even as big as the shields in this game, was one of the most common shields used in historical combat.

I know that larger shields were used in phalanx formations historically but this is fantasy game with magic and monsters. Even if it were realistic, shields of around 30" in diameter were common and used in single combat (Vikings for ex.). They're not as large as tower shields but allow decent protection for the upper body. Something like the banded-iron or steel shield would be nice.

The khajiit shields, even at higher levels, are fairly realistic in size even for a "viking" shield, minus the fact that they're crescent shaped and have a huge hole in them.

Breton, redguard, and barbaric shield styles are probably the largest available in ESO, at higher levels all of them are the size of a mid-large kite shield.

Khajiit weapons are nice but I can never understand why their shields have a crescent-shaped hole which really defeats its purpose. Breton maple shields are the best when you start off because they're not as small as other round ones that barely cover your arm. The large kite shields are mostly for tanks and Orcs imo.

Its not the size that matters, so they say,
    Its how you use it.

Not all swords are for slashing the hole in the small shields are for frusting swords like greek romen. Only tower shilds are used with spears

I know this is an MMO but it would nice if there were spears or javelins that you could use for close to mid range combat as one-handed weapons with a shield in the other. Hopefully in TES VI.
