Mounts I can understand, even the costumes, but what's the point of the pets?

Okay, so I have 3500 crowns so I went to the store and bought the costume pack, a wolf hound and the pie-bald (hey, I got the crowns for free with the Imperial addition).

While I can see that some folks might want the costumes (feh for me - I don't really care for them) and the mount might be nice (although I'll never use mine - I prefer to just run everywhere), but, what's the point of the pet? It doesn't do anything except follow me around. If it helped in fighting or had some special ability, great, but, all I can see is that it follows me everywhere and watches me get killed regularly.

I'm confused.

Vanity pets serve absolutely no purpose other than to annoy other players in banks, crafting halls, and other public areas. They can't be used in combat.

If the costumes are not for you, then I think it's safe to say that the pet is not for you. They don't do anything, it's purely cosmetic. Like a fancy hat, but cuter.

Though there are aesthetic reasons for many, like perhaps the comfort of a recognizable bark while in a particularly nasty dungeon (after getting KO'd multiple times trying to solo a group delve for instance), I personally would like some manner of functionality to be added, whether limited combat or buff skills, or fetching items from hard to reach areas; but more meaningful interaction is the idea.

Perhaps with the introduction of housing, pets can become more than just un-interactable followers.

Fetching items would be awesome! And your pet would only perform based on a happiness meter, which is filled by feeding or caring for your pet.

I don't see what would be wrong about a mini-mini game (let's be honest, you feed it 1 thing a day to make sure it performs is not a mini-game) about feeding pets. You already have the pets. Might as well add some immersion™ to them.

I have some pets, but I really don't use them all that much. Sometimes I like feeling like I have someone with me as I walk along the world. Then of course I forget they are there and I swipe at them in battles. I also had to stop using one of the tigers because when it sound off, I thought it was a mob aggroing on me.

No point really. Its one of the MMO RPG staples that continue to go on for no reason (along with a lot of other things I won't mention...but I digress). Ideally it would be awesome if pets did more than just follow you around (like gathering your items from your kills, assisting with buffs, healing or attacks in solo battle, doing some crafting work, etc.), but people would start claiming that the game would be pay to win at that point, if you could buy pets that do these things (which I can't really completely argue against to be honest).

Still, there is a crowd, for whatever reason, who like the cosmetics of them and don't mind having them follow around. Not really knocking them, they can play how they want, just don't see the value for them myself, and that's okay.

Would be awesome to play a game where pets actually had some use though, just once.

    Stuff like that...just something practical.

I do remember have that stupid monkey as a pet...and I deleted it. But, I still had the monkey following me around, even in Cyrodiil, for MONTHS because I bugged it out when I delete the item while it was active.

You went into the Crown store and bought the following:
    • Costume pack. "feh for me - I don't really care for them"
    • pie-bald. "although I'll never use mine - I prefer to just run everywhere"
    • wolf hound. "what's the point of the pet?"

If you think YOU are confused...

I have pets, both the Crown and the ones that are actually earned, and I use them in the game. I figure that they are like being in a typical pick up group like I used to get in WoW. They follow me around and don't actually contribute anything.

Seriously, they are just something that is there as a passive companion. They don't actually do anything important, and they should not be doing anything important, but they are just there. It differentiates me from others who are playing, and connects me informally to those who have the same pet out.

    No point. Waste of graphics.

Pets are right up there with ugly shoulders and flappy hips that we should be able to toggle off

I am not OK with this. It would make 1 pet better than the others, at least for certain situations. Then you wouldn't have people using pets because they enjoy their pet, but because it helps them the most. Keep it universal or not at all.

haha well the shoulder armor can be unequipped but I agree about the flappy hips...what's the point of armor flaps there?

It's funny how some people here are genuinely annoyed by pets as if they're solid and get in the way. Only 2 of my characters have the scuttler following them for RP reasons, same with my minions always being summoned on my sorcerer.

The issue with pets providing buffs is everyone would have them activated, and that would add to the lag in the game the same way a lot of NPCs add to the lag.

See thats the point, it's your RP. I could care less what story you created yourself to play, nor do I expect anyone to care about mine. That's why it should be a toggle instead of forcing me into your story. It's unnecessary fluff in a game already plagued by lag.

That said, I expect they will never allow us to turn them off with the idea that annoying people will make them buy them too. Game has to make money somehow, sure isn't with that new content every cpl months, so I guess fluff will have to do.

I understand. If it makes you feel any better, I usually play off peak hours so I'm not really contributing to any lag when there's only a handful of players in town with me. I have yet to even try PvP and won't take my pet with me when I do.
I think the people who stand around on their mounts all the time are more of a problem...there's no need to ride your mount inside the blacksmith pavilion.

They're just copying what other MMORPG's are doing unfortunately. They're beyond pointless, they're annoying. Games weren't always like this, Ultima Online you had to make your own quests, and you could tame an animal if you had the taming skill high enough. You could bring it through town, but it had a purpose... you could have it fight with you (they weren't super strong) or you could practice your healing on it, some people who were GM in taming and barding could tame a dragon, which used up 200 of your 700 skill points to do and took months and months to accomplish, and would trap them in their homes so they couldn't leave when they became untame (had to feed them to keep them happy).
I recommended they should do this in this game, and there were quite a few people that just didn't get it, they thought I meant collecting pets, like the store for some reason... Ultima Online came out some 17 years ago and has so much more than this game has. Unfortunately it seems like unless someone has already experienced it in a game, they think it shouldn't be implemented because they don't understand how it works.
