But I'm not talking about dragons, I'm talking about every creature in this game being able to tame as your "pet" to help you fight. Because the pets we have now seem pretty useless, plus it's fun to go out, and play your guitar thing to put them in a trance, to then use your tame skill...

Personally, I don't see why not as a skill line somewhere down the road.
It's not like there aren't NPC Rangers in the game already.

If it was a skill line available to everyone, I will tell you exactly what would happen. Everyone and their dog, at first, would go out and find whatever to train and use as a pet, then we would have 10,000 times more annoying, flapping, screeching, pets in every bank and crafting area in every single zone. You wouldn't be able to get away from it.

Sorry, but ESO isn't going to be The Littlest Pet Shop, no matter how much you want it to be.

Although I would love to see a 60 man Cyrodiil zerg all running with pet deer and rabbits. That lag would be worth it.

So just make it temporary, long enough to use in a fight, say a minute or so, maybe with passives to take it up to 2 min.

Ask people how much they like to rebuff Rally all the time. Now ask them to go tame a pet just as often.

Even if this wasn't a silly idea, that alone would kill it.

I vote YES on the condition below......

That all vanity pets are removed from the game.... I would rather see everyone with 1 attack pet, than 3 vanity pets running around for everyone.....

The simplest solution, which wouldn't take them 5 minutes to do, is to ban all vanity pets and summons from banks, crafting areas, and other public places. Just like trying to ride your horse into a cave, as soon as you cross the threshold, it automatically gets put away and you can't call it while inside the structure.

Agreed; If an NPC ranger or Spriggan can have a bear, wolf, spider...why not a player?

Though I would rather the current crown store pets have some sort of functionality, like limited combat abilities, or even fetching hard to reach items, there are some concerns that will hold this back unfortunately:

1--PvP would be an absolute mess because almost everyone would obviously choose to tame (Would the ensuing lag destroy the servers, and the surrounding square block as well?).

2--Class diversity would shrink even further (one less ability slot per bar, assuming the mechanic is similarly handled to sorc summons).

Solution: A new class (with Nature Magic focus) that allows for the taming (which would have MUCH better variety than the sorc; honestly, there should have been way more choices for sorc summons anyway!).

Competent PvP folks already know full well how to deal with the sorc summons, and a wamasu-accompanying wood elf will be no different in terms of tactics, but offer the variety most of us would like to see.

With refinement, I believe the OP's suggestion is a good idea for ESO.

As it is for the NPC, absolutely correct. But if through leveling the skill, the tamed creature could morph into the more powerful version; for instance, tame a small lizard, and through careful training and the application of secret Black Marsh voodoo, introduce a wamasu, complete with lightning goodness.

This is really just about variety, and customization, not changing current game mechanics to make it work.

Isn't changing the game to incorporate something player characters don't have access to by definition changing current game mechanics?

Yep, that's confusing; this is what I meant:

Sorc already has a summon, so instituting a different class with essentially a summon, even though acquiring the creature is handled with more variety, is not wholly different in tactics for the player or opposing player or NPC.

The taming action is obviously a new mechanic, but the actual playing of the new class would not be a radical change, in terms of the combat after acquiring the creature.

If it were implemented at all, I would like to see it as a Bosmer racial skill. In previous TES titles, Bosmer's had a calm creature skill that allowed them to do just that.

    But as newtinmpls said:

... 5 min in a bank looking at the bottom of someone's winged twilight and I can understand some of the ... vehemence here.

The big problem I see - apart from the extended bank petting zoos - is that you'd be calming animals that moments ago were wild and aggressive. And while that may work great in games like Oblivion, it might cause scenarios like this to unfold:

You're hunting on Bleakrock, just a hard-working adventurer trying to get enough rawhide together to make a decent pair of boots. And maybe buy some ale. Or mead. Or - god forbid - beer. Would it kill 'em to buy beer once in awhile?

But your thoughts on possible refreshments are brought to a screeching halt when you see a huge white polar bear walking through the woods. What a pair of boots that would make! Kind of like what they wear in that other video game - you know the one? - where if you die you lose your underwear and you can tame rats .... oh, rats ... to follow you around.

You drop into sneak mode, aim your over-leveled bow . . . and select poison arrow. The bear drops without even a sigh.

But then serene woods erupt with violence! A furious Nord dressed only in soul shriven pants runs towards you, screaming as fast as his fingers can type:

"YOU KILLED MY PET BEAR!!! DAMN YOU!!! I'M GONNA REPORT YOUR ASS!!!!"

Anytime you add a new class to an "established" game, you risk throwing off any written towards balance you have made.

Additionally, if what you are suggesting is just a re-skin, rename of current in game abilities (I e. Sorcs now have the option to tame an in game creature instead of the stock pets) you have to convince the developers that it is a system that warrants their time above other needed code changes.

Even then, changes to a fundamental class skilll code might break other lines of code.

Not to mention all the qq posts about perceived transgressions.
