Console text chat discussion

  • Joejoebaggin
a text chat with various channel is needed badly on consoles. There are so many times want to buy or sell something that i cant find at a trader that would make this chat come in handy. Not only is it needed for buying/selling its alost needed to find groups. Everytime i log into the game i leave every voice channel i get into due to most of it being people yelling over eachother and people using kinects that cannot be understood.

I agree, voice chat has to be permanently off for me because of all of the horrible feedback, various volumes, screaming, music playing. It is a mess.

Text chat with trade channel, area chat, etc. needs to be implemented.

i agree with this 100%. the voice channels for area and some guilds are nothing but people yelling and screaming, kinects giving horible feedback and buzzing sounds.

we should not be begging for something that is a staple in every mmo.

It's kind of absurd that there's no text chat in an MMO.

It's also kind of absurd that you can't be in both group and guild voice chats at the same time.

It's also kind of absurd that I have to turn of area chat every time I zone. Nothing more immersion killing than area chat.

I wouldn't mind text chat. What they really need to do is stop auto forcing you into prox voice chat. If I want in, I'll join. Annoying as hell hearing this disgusting idiots being obnoxious loud and rude. I'm a grown up I don't need that sh#%. Should default put you in NO voice channel, if we want to join we'll join.

This becomes a real issue when you are guild leadership (or guild event organizer) and need to discuss something with all your guild mates at once, but they are split up among various groups. It basically prevents a guild (especially a large guild, like the one I used to lead and am now just a high ranking member of) from really communicating effectively in real time; when it needs to be done.

Sure, we have our forum and chat tools on the website, but these do not give us a guarantee our guild members will see it. Believe it or not, members don't spend 100% of their play time with the guild site up and running at the same time; and even if they did, they wouldn't be checking the page constantly anyway. Why you ask? Because they are focused on playing the game, and don't want to be distracted by constantly looking at our guild page. This is why in game chat is necessary; external solutions are much more intrusive to the game than a chat window will ever be; because the users need to constantly pull their attention away from the game they are trying to play to do something as simple as communicate effectively.

Plain and simple: I would like to see text chat on consoles.

I got a tiny bluetooth keyboard on my PS4 so I have no problem with typing in a chat window.

Without text chat the world feels a little dead. And voice chat might work quite well in theory but in practice it is quite often very annoying. When crafting I usually leave public voice chat because I hate to have other people's living rooms in my ear.

So: +1 for text chat. Pretty please!

I would go as far to say that text chat is almost essential for continuation of this game.

If I hit 50 (taking my time atm and level 15) and there still isn't text chat, goodbye. I resfue to play half a game. Text chat would open up many more possibilities and extend the life of the game.

I have played several MMO's and I can say that while playing these games having text chat was nice for selling/buying/group finding/recruiting.

I however typically like change against the status-quo and was really pumped to see that the MMO that I was about to start playing was leaving chat behind and forcing people to communicate with their natural tool being the voice.

Since playing the game I have seen some of the difficulties in the game for people selling/buying/recruiting/group finding. If I find anyone who annoys me I just mute them or block them and the problem is solved.

There needed to be some more thought that went into this for things like designated Selling/buying areas in each town or something like that. Farmers market if you will.

With all that said I think in the interim they add text in some manor for PS and XB(XB Glass is the easy fix). Then continue to develop their vision for voice chat. If they can really make it work, then people will leave text and use voice (all on their own), because it is easier once voice is developed properly.

Something that needs to be said as well is that people will evolve and make it better because together we are very creative.

Change for change's sake is almost never good. Change needs a reason behind it.

There was no reason to take out text chat, text chat is standard in online mediums because it just works. Voice chat is great for small groups and people have been using it as such since the option first existed, but they continue to use text chat in larger mediums like public chat, guild chat and trade chat because voice chat is simply a mess when more than one person is talking.

When people are speaking vocally you have to go one at a time and take your turn politely and that simply doesn't happen on the internet, even when everyone agrees to it. Not because they're necessarily being rude (though they often are), but because EVERYTHING else is lost.

When you're having a conversation in person you have body language to cue, you know when someone's done talking, who they're addressing and much more based on their behavior, where they're looking, what they're doing with their hands, etc.

All of that is lost online, and then you add in the additional layer of internet delay and even attempting to take turns means every pause between speakers stretches into the awkward phase where no one knows for sure who's turn it is, if the other person is done, if their mic cut out, etc..

That can be worked with in a small group of 2-6 or so, but once you go over that it turns into a mess. Most guilds with VOIP servers actually use complex muting privileges and chat channel organization so that raid leader can inform group leaders who can inform their group and groups can give feedback to the group leader who can inform the raid leader. There's a hierarchy and the tools to enforce it to result in smooth organization in situations where voice chat is required.

These tools do not exist here, even if we were willing to use them we'd have to use outside software to achieve that kind of organization within the software, not that it's specifically necessary but the point is just how limited the voice chat options available to us are.

Not only is text chat missing but the voice chat is anything but robust.

Now, again, change for change's sake is almost never good. The status quo exists because it's what works, experimentation and modification of that with evidence based progression is fine, but just throwing out the baby with the bath water is rash and sometimes dangerous, but usually just stupid.

One thing that could be done right now to have a real time chat while playing is have a IRC channel to NA and EU, for each alliance and each platform PS4/XBOX.
That way we can Trade, LFG, invite to guilds, etc while playing.
Until they put something real in game.
I believe theres a IRC app for smartphones/tablets or something similar.

I know it's ridiculous, but would remedy the need to text chat at the moment.
We can use our PSN/Gametag, that way we know each other in-game.
Just a suggestion, i dont have the knowledge to do this

It's not a bad idea but it would only really benefit people here to see it and would probably discourage the developers actually implementing it into the game.

    @Amiculi
    Wonderful post!

I wish I could vote insightful, agree and awesome all at once; but I only can do one, so awesome it is.

I'd like to add another problem I've had with voice only, even in a controlled (as much as we can) channel in ESO.

With in guild chat individual mutes create problems. We have 2 members who each muted the other (over some disagreement or intolerable background noise, or something, I wasn't on when the mutes happened). Later in the day, another member asked a question; each of these members attempted to answer it at the same time. It was about a build, so they were both going into a bit of detail and talking for a long while. They were unable to hear each other, so they didn't know they were talking over each other. For the rest of guild, it was minutes of these 2 just talking over each other. We tried to inform them they were speaking at the same time, but we got drowned out by one of the other when trying to explain what we were hearing. Some of our members just left the channel because they didn't want to deal with that.

We of course let these 2 know what was going on when they each stopped talking, but it was pure chaos while it was happening; through no ones fault.

Voice comms only just are not effective in large groups; the only way it works is with the tools @Amiculi mentions his/her post; but those restrictions and protocols are not conductive to a social environment, they are useful for a focused, functional experience.

I do not disagree that there are limitation with the voice chat in the game. I am on conference calls frequently and the same issues do arise however we are then dealing with professional people and it is much easier to address it. I was just excited to see them try something different. I see now after playing the game without text chat ,that text chat is needed and that is why I suggested it gets implemented. This way you have both options like in any normal MMO.

Not to mention it still forces the user to be distracted from the game they are playing in order to do something simple, like communicate.

3rd party solutions exist, but you either sacrifice real time, or constantly need to interrupt your playing in order to maintain real time communication. It is 100% intrusive to play or no benefit over a forum (or the built in text communication tools for PSN and XBL, which also suffer from intrusive popup notifications by default).
