Small gold sink is still gold sink.

Gold sinks are necessary in an MMO (helps balance the economy and player gold supply).

Now, whether ESO is balanced correctly is a different subject, in which case I could see an argument on reducing/removing waypoint costs (meaning too much gold is being removed from the system); but so far, it doesn't seem like too much gold is being removed.

So, I think current costs are fine.

Not to mention, if you have guilds, you can travel for free.

It's stupid imho. If anything I would prefer a rune or something that needs to be crafted that allows for casting of the fast travel spell.

It doesn't bother me too much. It's a small gold sink, and aside from that I like things that actually make you stop and think twice about taking the easy way out.

The free travel between known wayshrines has been covered but, so far as I know, it is not that easy on the consoles. On PC I can travel between starter island and beginner city using the wayshrines but that is not possible on the XB1. I can move around on the island but have to catch the boat back to the city. I have asked and no one has told me otherwise so I guess it is so.

No, you can do everything you can on PC. You just need to hold Left Trigger/Right Trigger to zoom out/in and you can travel anywhere you have discovered.

It worked fine in Ebonheart pact on XBone last week...as long as the city's shrine is unlocked before you hop the boat to newbie land, you should be able to travel back and forth once you find the island wayshrines. Some wayshrines you need to be VERY close to to get the prompt. At least they worked for me last week. They might be broken now.

I found this out last night when I was trying to find the way back to another location. I always stopped zooming out when it was an overview of the current map you're on as I had no idea they would let you zoom all the way out to see Tamriel.

Count me amongst the others here who didn't discover the free travel between shrines until many hours in and hundreds in gold wasted. :p

As I was nearing VR14, I was in an exp group killing the named boss mobs in Craglorn (heady days, you younglings missed out there)

I watched amazed as people continually ran to the way shrines and ported to the next boss.

A few things hit my mind

    1. Dont these n00bs know that they just need to press M to bring up the map and select their target wayshrine
    2. They are spending a FORTUNE on travel

Sigh. I basically spent 14 levels of the game missing out on the very basic idea of Wayshrine travel

I agree who exactly are you paying you are in the middle of nowhere you just tossing a pile of gold in the air or something? Teleportation has always been a magic spell in elder scrolls it should be here too. The pay to port is just dumb. What we really need is the Mark Recall spells from morrowind game its the same world the spell should exist. I usually marked right next to a banker then recalled directly to them from anywhere in the world.

I don't know if it exists on console but on PC you can open up your Guild window, right click on a guildies name (that is online) and select travel to player and be ported to the way shrine nearest their location for free.

There's a text somewhere in-game (and I can't remember its name, otherwise I'd post a link to it, as I'm sure the text from it must be on uesp or some other site) that explains, in theoretical terms, why we can teleport to wayshrines. In a nutshell (as far as I remember it anyway - I might get some parts of this slightly wrong), the wayshrines were erected by pilgrims and worshipers at "holy" places where the barrier between Aetherius and Mundus is thin. As a vestige (or possibly specifically as a "paragon" vestige) we have an intrinsic ability to travel from one of these places where Aetherius can be reached to another, as long as we have attuned ourselves to them. This is apparently only theoretically possible for an individual whose soul has somehow had its connection to Mundus broken.

So going along with this, you're not using some mortal magic spell to get to any of the wayshrines, instead you're using your inherent abilities to travel to a place where Aetherius meets Mundus. Perhaps the process is simple when you're already at one of these places, but when you're not near one of them the process consumes some material that has some sort of symbolic mystical link with Aetherius - perhaps gold.

    Just speculation.

Also something I didn't realise until my 6th character was on the last part of the main quest - you can use any wayshrine to port to the Harborage. I cannot tell you how much facepalming I did when I finally (after playing for MORE than a year!) realised that.

    are you joking??
its a game. there is no economy....... is there????
this game is big enough I don't actually know. economy might be a feature.

but in my mind its not post WW1 Germany when they started simply printing off money that exceeded their assets and in turn money became worthless. so worthless that it was costing people 4,000,000 marcs to buy a loaf of bread.
its a game where resources respawn (iron ore etc.) and im yet to meet a store vendor who doesn't have enough to buy everything in my inventory. no matter how much it all adds up to.

I could be entirely wrong but im pretty sure there isn't a "bank of Tamriel" with hundreds of tonnes of gold in their vault and when its all gone its all gone.
although that would be a very interesting feature.. I can already picture an ESO great depression lol

@Noomfy-Mop You made me laugh pretty hard there :) My first RPG on PC was Morrowind in 2002, so I may be kind of a vet but there are many here who go back much, much farther. Lots of walking in that game for those who remember.

My first MMO on PC was vanilla WoW, but I only played sporadically. I'd say the first MMO I really got into was Lord of the Rings Online. I bought a lifetime founder's sub in 2007. ESO reminds me a lot of LotRO in terms of the vastness and beauty of the game world, and overall, a great community. As a lowbie in LotRO you pretty much ran everywhere until about level 20-25. Horses were completely unaffordable, as were the swift travel stables, so you footed it everywhere to save coin. Finally getting that horse was a really big deal. Seriously, people from all over the server would send you grats messages. Once people began to level up and make money it became a kind of tradition in many guilds to buy a newer guildmate their first horse with the understanding they would do the same for someone else in the future. A lot of that has changed now in LotRO, as players are used to getting everywhere fast and want mounts at lvl 1, but TBH it was pretty cool back in the day. A mount gave you a real sense of accomplishment.

So anyway, I don't mind walking. I tend to gather more mats and find cool places that way. In a lot of ways ESO is the game LotRO could have become if it would of had more development resources and a larger player base. It was huge, but not this huge and the graphics were cutting edge at the time. Both very cool worlds to explore.

Once you learn the ins and outs of travel in ESO you'll see that it's not too much of a PITA to get around quickly. Hope you're enjoying the game!
