Seriously, that's what I do, at least so I know if there's any point starting something before the stupidly dark night comes and makes exploration in the world impossible for several hours.
Remember the sun rises in the East and settles in the West.
So where the son is located can tell you the time somewhat. There needs to be an in game clock
I see that as an 'authentic' means of telling time and I love it at night because when objects I want light up and I know gotta stop here... and here... and here...
