This kinda scares the crap out of me..

Either they rushed the game out the door but why? They delayed it a year.....

OR..or "I hope this is NOT true".. Made the game and slapped it a sticker on it and sent it out the door for c cash grab and then gives us the "The game isn't selling well yada yada."

But then again they did announce a console release date 1 week after neverwinter announced theirs so maybe they felt they had to strike. This does explain the rushed feeling of the name issues and no chat box

The name and chat box 'issue' on console were deliberate choices. In fact, those two changes likely caused MORE work for them.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

i dont understand why any of those UI elements were removed....

make them optional toggles sure, but remove them entirely... bit odd.

mind you, i've always had trouble understanding some of ESO's design decisions

This UI is amazing and just a "yes, I need" to name plates from me.

MMOs try to beat each other with visuals and exotic background stories and character evolution patterns nowadays, but sometimes me seems the developers just miss out what is already undeclared standard. A functional and working user interface.

SWTOR already made that fault. At the time I played this game...ever tried to filter the market place UI for already known / unknown recipes ? Sometimes over a billion bucks aren't enough, if you hire indian cloud workers as subcontractors, who don't have a tiny guess about what they are doing...

...but Zenimax' intention was of another sort me thinks. Why create a good UI, if we just open .lua interfaces so some idiot will do it for us for free.

I'm confused.. my UI has pretty much all of this with the exception of the main map.
I wish I had a nicely colored one like that, so I could easily tell what parts are navigable.

Is it just console that is missing this stuff? It really sucks that console has to miss out on addons.

My wife complains that I never listen to her. (Or something like that.)
    -- I'm a one man smurf zerg!

    My ESO addons:
Midnight - Find out when midnight is so that you can check for ww/vamp spawn.
Goto - Adds a tab to the map pane allowing you to teleport to a friend, guildmate, or groupmate for free.

There's a world of difference between supporting features natively and through addons. One difference being the fact that consoles don't have any of them, as you noticed.

Man that is so much better than the current UI!! ZOS bring this back!

The fact you took it away is ridiculous but even more ridiculous is the fact you don't leave it as an option to be toggled for those who prefer it. As others have said, the game is focused around giving choice but when it comes to UI you removed it and left it an empty worthless POS that requires addons to be a proper MMO UI. Why is it so hard to give us the OPTION/CHOICE?

Put this back in! Especially console side since they can't even use addons if they wanted too.

Yeah but how any company would think that making an MMO without a chat box "OPTION" is beyond me.

Let me start off by saying that I was one of the people who actually played the game when it was in this state. Based on some information we got from ZoS - we estimated there was about 500-600 of us.

That being said... Just about everyone who was playing enjoyed the first UI much better. When it changed much of the community that was playing asked for it to be returned - there were even popular addons that re-enabled the minimap for a while.

The community that WAS NOT PLAYING THE GAME, however, were up in arms that there were "numbers" in their Skyrim 2 when they saw leaked content. Zenimax decided to listen to people on the outside (mainly reddit at the time), and change their game for them. We tried about everything on the beta forums to get them to listen to us. We tried being constructive, we tried throwing fits, but when it came down to it - ZOS just plain didn't listen to a word we said. The funny thing is, they removed name plates from the live game, but still used it for in house testing for months. I actually got banned from the beta forums at one point when Paul Sage made a post on the forums claiming that the API was nerfed into oblivion because it made it too easy for "bots". We all know how that ended up: Launch month was plagued with armies of bots anyway. Long story short, I claimed BS on the reasoning, and they didn't want to bother to explain. I imagine now it was for the console launch announced later that wouldn't have access to all the great addons that would be available.

There were a lot of other great things in the game back then too. Like you used to get bonus xp/gold in a fight if you blocked heavy attacks, avoided red circles, and interrupted spells. They removed that entirely. The PvE was actually challenging at one point too. I remember actually chain dying to bandits in the starting DC areas; Now you can pretty much light attack spam a whole group down.

EDIT: Oh, there was also in game scrolling combat text. It looked great despite being an early version. It was able to pop out of the targets you hit, rather than having to scroll on your UI like it does now.

That's great insight. I didn't play that early on, but got into some early betas, and the combat felt a lot better and more intense. Now you just feel like a steamroller going form quest hub to quest hub.

Regardless of the console, these posts don't normally get a real response. Mostly because there isn't much anyone can say. They won't admit they screwed up, and they wont bring the stuff back. All that's left is to say "We hear your feedback" - which we all know translates to "Not gonna happen". More than likely you'll just see this post sink into the abyss once they flag it to go away and our posts no longer bump it.

    This is so depressing.

You saw these things gradually removed. Did they ever explain why? Or did they just silently take them out?
Unfortunately no, explanations were not provided even on the closed beta forums. The only topics they did respond to were api changes regarding buff information towards launch when a lot of pre ordering people were without having played the game, demanding that addons be disallowed from showing even game info about your own character. When the minimap was removed, it was asked about frequently but never responded to. An addon was able to make it show back up as it had only been disabled but not removed. Eventually it was fully removed and a few weeks of thread bumping later by other closed beta testers only yielded a response saying they did not plan to bring it back, as they did not want to commit the development resources to update it.

    :(

I really still hope they end up bringing all of these options back. I have tried to bring attention to these issues for a long time now but little has been said about them by ZOS, sadly.

Was this when they were usingthe hero engine or after they built their own?

This was all after. This was the same game you are playing now - just with a better UI.

ESO prime design decision seems to be "to do things differently"; which is fine as long as "different" works, and is at least as good as that which you are striving to be different from.

In 90% of cases ESO hasn't managed one or the other of those, and in some cases they haven't managed either (trade kiosks I'm looking at you).

Unfortunately true. They are doing things differently, but this almost never has turned out to be "better" so far. @Erlex's account is accurate, for the record, having myself played around that time period (nameplates had been disabled but still in the game options when I first began, though).

I don' think any of us did. And I haven't met anyone yet who thinks it was a) a good idea and b) thinks it makes any sense at all. It was clearly a rush job at the last minute and a way to keep us busy while they stalled content release for the console polishing.

Mine too. Honestly, staring for tiny spell effects amidst twenty other similar ones for a proc is much more disruptive to watching the game world and gameplay than an intuitive and clear buff indicator near my health bar, for example. Other than overdue additions like the Imperial City, I can't think of any single thing I want to see so badly as the user interface being fixed back up. It's just that big of a day in, day out gameplay inhibitor and annoyance in its current state.

Sure did take a lot of digging... but with manual frame-stepping and analysis, I finally have recovered the long-lost and fully-functional Elder Scrolls Online user interface that somehow became lost in space-time for the last two and a half years...

When will we get this back in-game!? The UI we have now is so much worse :(...

Nameplates!! AND A MINIMAP with multi-quest tracking options!!!! And it looks great! All of it was toggleable, and minimalistic/concise!
    Cz6NZa5.jpg

A real backpack/inventory with category filters while showing vendor values of items, names, icons, and not being limited to 6-7 items on-screen at one time...!
    RqmJoC1.jpg

The map window, with quest tracking options, more detail and color to the terrain, and quest descriptions/journal entries!
    hMNX2zp.jpg

Numbers on the resource bars! You could actually know that you were hit for a given amount of health, rather than guessing and pixel-counting without addons... ;). You could even see your remaining magicka and stamina!
    XsL8qVc.jpg

The skills window.. much more concise tooltips, bullet-point lists of effects and costs, unlock ranks at a glance, and the full skill line without needing to scroll up and down...!
    NfCDFFL.jpg

Can we please get these options re-implemented? =)

I would love for Shadowfen and Murkmire to look more like that visually. Shadowfen is too bright and colorful in my opinion. Doesnt feel like the creepy dangerous swamps you hear about. Hopefully as more areas of Blackmarsh are expanded on we can see more of this visual style.

It still seems like that. The dev tracker doesn't have any devs on it besides Brian. It's just mods, it's pretty much the mod tracker with the exception of what Gina, Jessica and Jason track down for us. Meanwhile there are devs actually talking on reddit. Makes no sense to me.
