Maintenance for the week of October 6:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – October 6

The only reason i can think of that text chat would not work on console is if they completely failed to acount for it in their engine and archetecture. Thats on ZOS though, as console text chat has been a thing for over a decade.

PS4 has KB and Mouse Support. FFXIV supports it. They should have built it in for at least that console, that way those players could turn the Voice Chat off by default and still been able to chat via text with KB and Mouse, with the option to start PARTY Chats when they were in a group.

Microsoft is also partly to blame. They refuse to implement KB/Mouse support in Xboxes, most likely in an attempt to sell the Kinect and its Voice Controls.

    But that's why I got a PS4.

I don't have the game on console, but I was seriously considering it since it would likely have been a bit more comfortable to play it with a controller (I think it's horrible on PC/Mac) from the comfort of my recliner, but not if I'm going to have to constantly deal with this Area Chat. Guess I gotta wait another year because that's about how long it takes for this company to make anything resembling sane decisions - it seems.

Exactly. It drives me crazy when I see statements along the lines of "it is too difficult for console players to use text chat...". I've played DC Universe Online since it launched and the overwhelming majority of the players there use text chat with the only exception being push-to-talk voice chat in raids where speed is helpful. But the LFG, Trade, and similar subjects are handled with text chat quite nicely.

A cheap $10 USB keyboard makes it easy to type on the consoles.

Xbox One doesn't have KB/Mouse Support. Only PS4 (and PS3) has that. I don't think Xbox 360 supports them, either, but there are those clunky chat pad things you can get for them (yay?!).

Additionally, a USB Keyboard is terrible because some people have large televisions and their consoles are in an entertainment center (with doors). You need BT KB support for that to matter to a lot of people, and only the PS4 supports BT KB/Mice.

The option to mute people would be perfect.. surely it can't be that difficult to implement? When I mentioned this before, someone wrote out a way it could be done, but I haven't been able to do it on the XB1.

I play my PC on my TV from my couch. you can pick up a decent wireless keyboard for 10-20$.

Hmmm...weird because I've seen plenty of advice for Neverwinter (an XBone game) that people should use a Wireless keyboard to play the game.

I don't have a keyboard hooked to my XBone, so I can't confirm, but I swear I saw people saying this.

Also, wireless keyboards (with the USB dongle) should work fine.

Finally, XBox also offers smart glass as an option, if KB really doesn't work; and I've even seen people hook keyboards up to their smart glass device and use them on the Xbox through that.

I'm pretty sure that you can just leave area chat whenever you wanted. I'm usually in Guild chat but I don't think you have to be on a chat channel at all if you choose not to be.

Don't reply without reading the post. Like I said, even if you leave area chat it puts you back in it constantly. I probably leave area chat 20+ times every time I play.

They lied. Text chat itself is trivial to implement. Any idiot could do it after a week of reading tutorials online. The only possible explanation is that somehow PSN and Live prevent text chat, but that's obviously not the case since several console MMOs already have text chat.

I am beyond over the voip system now i just want an option to permanently close it down from my end.
My mates and i use psn chat and split into two parties if needed anything is better than voip.

Leave it in game for all i care
just an option to permanently disable it

I'm mainly a PC player. I use Keyboard to interact with strangers and for chats with friends / guildies and use voice chat mainly for when doing group related content.

I really don't know why people like this kind of open voice chat, it's terrible, full of lag and once you move a bit too far away you can't even talk with them anymore.

It's the same for GTA V, I really don't know why people use that open vc, I just start up vent, ts, mumble, or whatever program with my friends which has much better quality, zero lag and has perfect open to automatically reduce game sound when somebody speaks so you can still enjoy your game sound and still hear it when somebody is talking.

To the OP create a PS4 (or Xbox if you're using that) party chat, if you want to play 'solo' you can make the party chat closed (though not sure how that works on Xbox).

Is there any reason you wouldn't expect this game to be full the least mature players possible? Opt-out Voice chat sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.

I've payed over 80 for Imperial edition and again 15 for console transfer, how is this free to play?

So I just heard what sounded like someone rubbing sandpaper on their mic underwater transmitting constantly. I told the person to mute their mic before everyone went deaf and the response was "F*** you! How's this sound?! F*** you f*** you f*** you f*** you..." and he kept repeating it until I left. People don't beat their kids enough anymore, but I digress. Here's a list of things I've heard today. Note that 'stuff I wanted to hear' is not on the list.
    • Answering machine messages.
    • Screaming babies.
    • Squeaky-voiced twelve year olds
    • Heavy pervert breathing.
    • Various assorted bodily functions.
    • Constant unintelligible mumbling.
    • Unidentifiable eardrum shattering noises.
    • Barking dogs.
    • What appeared to be a business phone call.
    • Very loud and very horrible music.
    • Way too many other things to list.
    • Voice roleplaying, which is the second saddest and most woman repelling activity there is, after LARPing.

PC gaming taught me that voice chat is awesome. Console gaming taught me that giving voice chat to random strangers is never a good idea. Ever. For any reason. Under any circumstances. No exceptions. For the sake of my sanity please let me turn off area chat without it constantly turning itself back on.

Yeah I hate to interact with others too. They should learn that guys like you and me are lone wolves and want to be left alone.

I have no idea what Xbox supports, but since PS4s and Xboxes are on separate servers, their limitations should have no bearing on the PS4 players. After all, the PC version of the game supports text chat.

And as others have said, for PS4 players we can use wireless keyboards or simply a USB keyboard with a long cord. It isn't difficult to negotiate at all. It takes far less time and frustration to spend a few minutes setting up a keyboard in a usable fashion than to try to jump through all of the hoops of constantly needing to LEAVE THE GAME in order to communicate with other players.

I've used a keyboard on my PS4 to communicate with other players literally since launch day, and it still stuns me when I read folks stating that either what I and millions other do is impossible or that it is just too difficult. No it isn't. DCUO has had over a million players, with over 70% of the subscribers being PS3 and PS4 players, and the majority of them have and do use text chat in the game. There is no excuse for it not being an option for PS4 players in ESO as well.

The Xbox one supports USB keyboards fine , along with character names instead of gamer tags.

Current Xbox one games let you type with a keyboard and use character names.

Zenimax tried to shift the blame for their stupid decisions about these things implying it was too hard because of MS.

Apparently just too hard for them.

Nope. Same guy who was on the boring business call. When I entered town the message was playing. I went in a store to free up some inventory space and use the cooking fire. When I came back out he was calling the guy back. On speaker phone without muting his mic because apparently he thinks everyone in Tamriel cares about whether his coworker received a spreadsheet or not.

I'm not antisocial just because I don't want to hear 13 year old console kiddies call me racial slurs. If I did I'd play CoD and/or Halo. I'm also not antisocial for not wanting to hear people roll their headset down the side of a mountain or whatever they're doing to make such ear splitting noises. On PC I spend 99% of my time in Teamspeak, Ventrilo or Mumble. I'm very social. It's just that I only want to be social with friends and guild members.

Why is a long story, but I'm having to rebuild my gaming rig from scratch. I'm poor and my computers are very high end so it takes a while. I got a PS4 to tide me over until it's finished. I'm over half way there now and ZOS has a few more months to convince me I don't want to use the PS4 for target practice as soon as my PC is done. So far they're doing a very bad job at it.

Lol...I already have run into someone spamming, near the BS Stations, "Looking for Dwarven Oil. Who has some Dwarven Oil? I really need some Dwarven Oil." on one of the occasions my Area Chat "turned itself back on" again when I ported to Daggerfall. Out of curiosity I listened to this guy (and timed it) doing this for over 2 minutes straight...just mindlessly droning on about Dwarven Oil and his need of it; and I mean droning on, one sentence/question would end, the next would start immediately. There was no pause, no wait for response.

Now, I feel a bit guilty, because I have a ton of Dwarven Oil, but I was annoyed by his behavior (only listening to see how long he would keep it up); so I didn't trade with him to shut him up. I did however, turn off Area chat after 2 minutes of listening to this (he was still going when I left, hence the over 2 minutes above, I'm not sure how long he eventually kept it up for, or if he ever got that Dwarven Oil).

Yet one more reason to just close down Area Chat immediately, if this is an example of what we will hear when we go into a town.
