People don't beat their kids enough anymore, but I digress.

Indeed. When I was a kid, were I to say stuff like that, my dad would have made me go find the paddle. It had holes drilled into it, to cut down on air resistance. I said, "sir" or "ma'am" to adults, and I showed respect for my elders.

    Kids today...

Don't you know that you can't beat these droves of "autistic" children these days? ;)

Including people I actually want to hear. That's not a solution. They need to fix the game. The game shouldn't be joining channels by itself.

How did we get to this sad point? What's with this "area chat"? Who ever thought that "hey, let's make it so everyone within the vicinity can hear each other" and they CAN"T MUTE IT? or can mute, but by default it's ENABLED.

    Insane.

They said that text chat is near impossible. Area chat is the next best thing. while it might not be perfect, there are plenty of ways to only have to deal with it when you want. Its not forcing you to listen to the babies on the kinect mics! =P

Please link me where ZOS stated that "text chat is near impossible" on consoles.

@Pman85 How about stop calling people "turds" and answer my above request...

The audio quality through the in-game voice channels is terrible also - its too loud and voices distort. PSN party chat is vastly better.

    Agree 100% with xeneblaze

The chat on the game is awful! There are 2 ways around it that I have found. #2 is by far the best option until they fix it.

    1. I normally play in a group and that lets you change to group chat. I don't have as many issues when I do that. However it still does have it's problems from time to time.

    2. If you are on PS4 (maybe Xbox also) Me and my friends use the Party chat built into PS4 with all games. Sony did a great job with this. You can start a privet party and invite whoever you want from your friends list or just make a privet party by yourself. This will keep everything else except the game sound off.

Note:The only thing I wish they would add is a way to set the volume for each player as some are to low and others to loud. Right now they have to change their mic volume on their own console. Most people don't even know how or that it's possible. It gets old walking each player though how to do it. Other then that it works great and we can even chat if PSN is down!

I am 100% in agreement with the OP. Just give us an option to not auto-join area chat channels (or even better, just have the game remember what channels we are joined into on each character - it'd be so nice to sign in as my AD character and be signed into whatever AD guild channel I was signed into the last time I played, and the same for my DC character, etc.)

I know I can leave these channels myself, but I would much rather join a channel on the rare occasion I need to than have to constantly leave channels over and over again.

Just have Area Voice Chat off as default. If you want to listen to whining babies, foul language and screaming children toggle it on. It's a simple solution. It's a disruption to an RP environment when someone is talking about the motorcycle he just bought in Arizona. It really is a pain to travel from one end of a city to the other and having to stop two or three times and navigate through the menus to turn Area Voice Chat off. Default "Off", Its simple.

You can turn it off if you like. Or as people told that southern preacher in the 80s that wanted to ban MTV and rock music on the radio, just change the channel :)

So I just heard what sounded like someone rubbing sandpaper on their mic underwater transmitting constantly. I told the person to mute their mic before everyone went deaf and the response was "F*** you! How's this sound?! F*** you f*** you f*** you f*** you..." and he kept repeating it until I left. People don't beat their kids enough anymore, but I digress. Here's a list of things I've heard today. Note that 'stuff I wanted to hear' is not on the list.
    • Answering machine messages.
    • Screaming babies.
    • Squeaky-voiced twelve year olds
    • Heavy pervert breathing.
    • Various assorted bodily functions.
    • Constant unintelligible mumbling.
    • Unidentifiable eardrum shattering noises.
    • Barking dogs.
    • What appeared to be a business phone call.
    • Very loud and very horrible music.
    • Way too many other things to list.
    • Voice roleplaying, which is the second saddest and most woman repelling activity there is, after LARPing.

PC gaming taught me that voice chat is awesome. Console gaming taught me that giving voice chat to random strangers is never a good idea. Ever. For any reason. Under any circumstances. No exceptions. For the sake of my sanity please let me turn off area chat without it constantly turning itself back on.

you can always make a party and it will block all that sound. not to hard to do to be honest, also i agree with most of the list but the last one. i do not RP on console but i do RP on most games i play on PC and it is quite fun. Just because you dislike it does not mean its wrong or "woman repelling, hell i met my wife via RP and we have been together for 7 years.
Though for most annoying id have to say those arguments you are hearing...usually kids and parents yelling back and forth.

There is no way to keep it off by default. It comes right back on when you switch characters. I think the OP was asking why there isn't a permanent toggle. I would like to see this implemented as well. However, the real underlying issue is the lack of text chat

Ill be very honest here... and it might offend some people. The baby crying and the kids in the background is the most annoying freaking noise ever. Yeah I know they say I'm a parent.. sorry I got kids in the background. But if you're going to be on your Mic and your baby is crying or kids are screaming because they are hungry get the *** off your and tend to your kids. And if you cant do that. Hit your mute button on your Damon headset. Its that *** easy.

Ive come to the conclusion that area voice chat, sans text chat for an alternative, on consoles is really just a very clever social experiment to see how players manage to complete game content under high levels of stress.

Please continue to suffer for science, for I honestly want to know the results.

The first thing I do after I log in is turn off all my voice chats (this is somewhat annoying, since I get booted several times every day, I have to do this several times every day). I am somewhat stunned that no one thought, "Let's put an option in somewhere so that a person can turn off Join By Default."

It is also bizarre that when I get auto-joined into area chat, I am unable for 6 seconds to leave the channel, so my eardrums still get blown out by these ridiculous, apparently-parentless children and people eating crackers and dogs who thought they just heard a doorbell.

Additionally: I'm appalled at the number of people who have smoke detectors that need new batteries.

Pretty much the theme of Zenimax and the console launch summed up right here.

    The answer ?

    The less the better.

Whatever is easier for them , means less for you.

Area chat is terrible 99.9% of the time but I leave it on for that small chance at a laugh or someone selling tempers cheap. One night I overheard Jeff Bridges selling bananas in Vulkhel Guard. :)

Why you console peeps can't turn off area chat and it stay off is beyond me. I mean some of you have 'hide helmet' turned on, right?

Do you need to turn that back on every time you log in or zone to a different place?

I was going to buy ESO for console, but hearing all this...I'm just sticking with PC. What's the last thing I want to hear when I come home from work to chill on ESO? That's right, all the bull that appears to be happening over voice chat in console. No thanks.

I feel for you guys, I really do. It must be a total headache.

So it seems to be too much of a problem for people to simply leave area chat? like what are you doing, logging out every 5 minutes?

I'd just be happy if they got rid of area chat and gave us text chat instead. Group chat is cool though.

I played ESO on PS4 for a couple weeks after launch, but soon stopped because the lack of text chat just made it feel like an empty, depressing game. And there's nothing worse than listening to an npc and some mouth breathe stopping right next to you with their loud, creepy breathing making it hard to listen to the npc.

I know the subject has been beaten like a dead horse, but how can ZOS be so daft as to not see the error in this decision to leave text chat out of console versions? I haven't bothered going back to PS4 because it's such a painful experience. And the whole reason I got the PS4 version was so I could play with a friend from work, but I can't suffer through scores of mouth breathers and guys who sound like pot smoking frat boys to do that.

If ZOS had included push-to-talk by default then they wouldn't have to eliminate it. I still don't know what in the hell they were thinking by including open mics as the default (especially with a good chunk of the Xbox community having kinect mics on all the time that they probably don't even think about). Could that NOT have failed?

When you are balls deep in DSA trying for 11k, will you take a finger off the button to talk? didnt think so. Its not like you can leave area chat or anything........

The problem with the open mics are the chats these players are joining. You will find turds on the mic no matter what game it is, it is up to you to find a way around that. Dont like it? leave the chat. If you guild is just as bad as area chat, you should find a better quality guild imo.

I've played tournament games in the early 2000's that had push to talk. It was usually either circle, square or R3 on the ps2. If I can click the push to talk button while moving both analog sticks, Holding L1 to aim, Tapping R1 to burst fire, using the D-pad to switch weapons, clicking X to jump, clicking the crouch button and leaning left and right while couching and knowing when to move and un click to button to lock you into a lean..... All while dropping people in a 50K tournament with the best players in the world. I think Zeni can add a push to talk on this game.
